English Teachers - Help!

Hi there,

I've been out of classroom teaching for six years now. I've been at home caring for my DCs (one who has SN but has just made it into mainstream.)

I've been asked for an 'informal chat' about a literacy support job at a local secondary school. I'd love it. BUT my knowledge of the changes in the curriculum and my own resources are totally out of date.

Any pointers to good sites for me to update my knowledge? My skills are all still there somewhere (I've been supporting a KS2 nurture group voluntarily for a while now and I surprise myself!)

TIA. I'm so nervous - I've done nothing remotely professional or clever for six whole years. Arrgh!

Sorry, just spotted this. You need to read the new Ofsted report which is called Moving English Forward which will give you a good idea of what Ofsted are now looking for in English teaching.
I've put a page of info for trainee teachers on my website www.thewidewideworld.co.uk and if you look towards the bottom of that there are links to some really good blogs by cutting-edge English practitioners that should definitely give you some ideas. Most of my site is about teenage fiction so might be useful if you want to know what teenagers are reading these days.

Ah, just revisited this - thanks for getting back! That's really helpful.

It all looks quite hopeful and I'm going in over the next few weeks to discuss contracts/experience etc, as well as some possible flexible working so I can pick my DCs up. I'll have a gander at that Ofsted link and your own site. What a good idea for a website!
