I thought Birmingham City Council were bankrupt? I have no idea who is funding the Invictus Games given the state of the City’s finances.

The Government department of veterans’ affairs (under a previous government) agreed to underwrite it up to approximately £26m. Birmingham City Council (under a previous administration) seemed keen. Both said there would be no cost to Birmingham, which was clearly untrue and deceptive.

Now we have a new government, and a new Green-LibDen-proGazaIndependents Birmingham City Council. The Invictus Games will be inviting the Israel IDF team who will likely be bringing Shin Bet security with them. This will be very problematic.

There will be financial, reputational and political costs and consequences.

Meanwhile, where are the sponsors, why does Invictus cost so much, and why is HaM’s presence so bloody expensive?

Underwritten up to 26 million?

I wonder how much of that is on ‘expenses’.

@jeffgoldblum - ooh, get you! That’s a great idea for elevating things and you should definitely highlight it on social media 🦢 🦢 🦢

God knows. Very little of the flannel really makes anything clear.

Helen Helliwell, chief executive of Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, said the games would be paid for by "central government funding, so we've got a full government underwrite" through the Office for Veterans' Affairs.

But she added "actually, really importantly, I want the money to come from the private sector, so I've been working hard to secure six founding partners".

Such a lot of words; no little financial detail to this day, while the clock is ticking.

Is this why Harry’s back? He has to raise the money or the main Invictus Games are cancelled and amalgamated into local and regional programmes?

Interesting, thanks for posting. As an aside, loving the new iteration on your user name 🕳️

Why are you having such a strong reaction to me answering a question that was literally posed on the thread and answered incorrectly?

The question was asked regarding who would be Regent if George became King. Someone said the PoW. I knew that was wrong, so came onto the thread to explain that, as the law stands, it would be Harry. That is just the law. I offered no opinions regarding it.

Why has that upset everyone?

It hasn't upset everyone.

Harry will never be Regent.

It’s as simple as that.

I lurk usually but am also intrigued by the 'why have they come back?' question.

I think it's simply because they have made a dreadful mistake. Or at least H has. The euphoria of 'escaping' his family, friends, purpose and means of support was never going to last. Going back to a celebrity life in California was presumably what M preferred to do but she wasn't able to make that happen and is now dragged back into H's attempt to recreate what he had before. But what they did in their attempts to be Californian celebrities now means they can't have what they had before. And the spiral continues.

It's been said many times before but they could have had a very nice life as minor royals, working or not. Or they could have engaged people who actually know PR, branding, marketing, business and media, taken their advice and had a very nice life in California as the faces of luxury businesses, good causes and harmless content about aristocratic life.

They are very ordinary - and self-absorbed- people with no special talents but instead of choosing one of these very nice lives, they listened to no-one, and embarked on this foolish journey until they ran out of road. They can't admit they made a terrible mistake, probably not even to themselves. So here they are, and I don't envy them.

Neither do I envy the various authorities who have to judge what kind of damage might be done to the country's reputation by these two as they spiral on.
