The royal family

Am I misremembering a line from Charles Spencer’s eulogy?

I have just watched it again (I had forgotten how incredibly well worded and delivered it was). But, I could have sworn that there was a line in his eulogy about the press having ‘blood on their hands.’ This line doesn’t appear in video of the speech on YouTube, nor in the transcripts I’ve read.

I was about 25 when Diana died and remember it all very well but perhaps I have misremembered that line.

He said it in a statement shortly after she died, not in the eulogy

Aha! Thank you! I will look it up.

didn't he also say something about bringing up the boys as their mother would have wanted (not how those heartless Windsors would want)?
I remember thinking, how exactly are you going to do that?

I'm the same age as you and I thought he said it too. Maybe it wasn't at the actual eulogy, but another time. I remember him saying something about he knew the press would be the death of her, but didn't expect it to happen in such direct way as well.
I remember everyone applauding his eulogy too, which I found rather uncomfortable at the time - because he was pretty disparaging (to say the least) about the Royals.
I don't particularly take sides in this, and never have - but I think both Charleses are pretty unpleasant people.

He wasn't disparaging about the royals in his eulogy.

I remember this comment, that raised a few eyebrows at the time...

...on behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned

It’s bizarre because I would have said that he said about the press having ‘blood on their hands’ in the eulogy. I remember thinking that he was going forward boldly in a eulogy. I’ve read the transcript and it must be one of those things that has got muddled. It was a long time ago.

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 23:08

The eulogy does not criticise the royal family. You can read things into various parts of it, but it is not directly critical as appropriate for a eulogy.

He made the ‘blood on hands’ quote the day she died from outside his home in Constantia

Aleveldilemma · 19/09/2026 05:05

He talked about being Diana’s “blood family” from what I remember.

This is correct. Thanks Mellow

He wasn't disparaging about the royals in his eulogy.

Oh I don’t think anyone could read his eulogy and see it as not negative about the royals

ginasevern · 19/09/2026 15:17

He made the "bloody on their hands" statement shortly after she died and not in the eulogy. He was in South Africa when news of her death reached him. The paragraph below is a small part of that statement and contains the reference

"It would appear that every proprietor and editor of every publication that has paid for intrusive and exploitative photographs of her, encouraging greedy and ruthless individuals to risk everything in pursuit of Diana's image, has blood on their hands today."

He wasn't disparaging about the royals in his eulogy.

You're a very tiny minority that actually thinks that. It wasn't even that subtle.
