It would be hard to say she had no interest in children but, imo, her theatre "visit" was very ill-advised.
What was to be gained by her presence in the theatre? She could easily have watched the operation on video if she somehow thought her understanding could be increased seeing an operation.
The makeup, sticking out bits of fringe, the gazing at the cameras all suggest to me she wasn't exactly wholly paying attention to the child.
Why was there even a camera there?
Nobody gained anything from that.
And having a non-professional in theatre during a delicate operation could have been dangerous.
If something suddenly goes wrong during a procedure, professionals know their roles, where to stand, what to do...
A lay woman and a photographer would, at least, be no use and, at worst, get in the way or panic and actually be dangerous to the patient.
If she had such empathy, she didn't need to be up close to the blood, the incisions...I'm sure she could have gained understanding from listening to the surgeon and staff, visiting and helping to comfort the child before and after.
Didn't her empathy give her an idea that having a serious operation wasn't exactly a fun time for a child without having to witness their blood?
Hospital theatres may be called "theatres" but they're not there for people who want to go to see a show.
(Sorry - bit of a rant and not aimed at you. It's something I felt and feel strongly about)
