@DaisyDooleythat’s really fascinating about the DoW, particularly about secreting away £1m. That was a lot of money in the 1930s.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 03/05/2026 19:47

Does anyone remember the tins of oranges ( and occasionally lemons or limes) made specifically for making marmalade? , I’ve forgotten the name and have not seen them in ages but I made some very successful marmalade with those!

you can get them in lakeland

CathyorClaire · 03/05/2026 21:24

The Duke of Windsor was left the Duchy of Lancaster (which provides the monarch with a private income) Sandringham & Balmoral by his father. He owned these properties lock stock and barrel

Sandringham and Balmoral by rights belong to the nation having been bought with an increase in civil list funds artificially bloated by Albert's bleating and subsequently diverted into Victoria's private purse.

The Duchy of Lancaster provides an income to the incumbent monarch so Ed8 would have surrendered his rights to the dosh when he abdicated. It went to G6.

bluegreygreen · 03/05/2026 21:25

It's a great book @ShamedBySiri - planning to work my way through a lot of the recipes!

Thanks for the tip about home-made being more bitter than commercial marmalade anyway. It worked for us as we like bitter marmalade, but was actually an error on my part (I didn't scale up properly).

BasiliskStare · 03/05/2026 21:26

@Mylovelygreendress - thank you for that. I must admit I have never understood why M fell out with her father. By all accounts he was good to her when she was younger. I know he sold stories about her and there were the embarrassing shots of him getting an outfit and bags of beers. But I think the Queen suggested they help him. Some of his more egregious moments do seem to be after H&M didn't really engage with him before the wedding. What his daughter was doing but have been way out of his experience so a bit of help , or even H meeting him ought to have helped I think. BUT I do not know the ins and outs and I don't follow TM's life - it just seems odd he went suddenly to persona non grata. That said , not my family , I don't know.

Mylovelygreendress · 03/05/2026 21:45

Meghan spoke gushingly about her father but it was strange that Harry never met him .
As has been said before , I think Meghan wanted to leave her past behind and that included all her family except her Mum . Even she doesn’t seem to be around much .

Well knock me down with a wet fish ... has he brought the Filipina nurse with him, or was that another flash in a pan?

Starryfifty · 03/05/2026 22:37

H has never met his father in law ?

H has never met his father in law ?

Nope . As far as I know the only relative of Meghan’s he has met is Doria .

LaurenBacal · 03/05/2026 22:53

He’s met her half niece who was in the Netflix documentary. Even though M didn’t invite her to the wedding.

Sandringham & Balmoral belong lock stock and barrel to the King.
The Duchy of Lancaster belongs to the monarch- it is to provide him/her with their private income. It was not set up like that or set up by the goverment (like the civil list was) so it’s complicated.
Put it this way, if we became a republic tomorrow the Duchy of Lancaster would go with the King.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that they don’t see each other anymore.
I had a bloody party on the day of the wedding.
Even designed a cake especially for it!
Alarm bells should have been ringing and red flags waving mdly when there was only Doria there. I men, even if that was someone from your own family marrying, just one relative there?? It’s very very odd.
Has she ever been in any of Meg’s instagram posts? Or was she in meghans tv series? I couldn’t bear to watch it…..

Mylovelygreendress · 03/05/2026 22:40

It was really odd.

I always got the impression that Meghan was embarrassed by the Markle side of the family and they didn't fit in with the vision she had. In fact I always wondered if her father being papped looking at suits was a set up to give her an excuse to uninvite and block him. I think they treated the wedding as a networking event for their planned escape - certainly inviting Oprah paid off.

Even her uncle Mike Markle, who was a retired diplomat and helped her get the internship in Argentina didn't get a wedding invitation.

Totally off topic but some posters may recall from a few threads back that thanks to the sight of Meghan’s horrid looking so called marmalade I was inspired to make some marmalade and enter a jar into the annual Dalemain Marmalade festival.
Yesterday I received my judging results:
A Silver 🥈 award! Very kind judging comments too.

https://www.dalemain.com/the-festival

“authentic”, no less! Seriously though, well done Siri!

They’ve apparently made an absolute killing on their house - paid £12m for it in 2020 now worth £24m - money makes money.

It’s only worth what someone will pay for it. They’d also have to find a buyer and the house had been on the market for a long time before they bought it. I got the impression that when it comes to houses in Montecito it’s a bit of a turkey.

He was to meet Harry for the very first time when he arrived in London for the wedding. The gruesome twosome showed us even then who they are.

@Puzzledandpissedoff re the nurse - she’s still in the Phillipines.
