Lip reading the royals

I've just watched a programme about the royals private conversations being lip read. I'm surprised they've got away with this as it's quite an invasion of privacy. Why did I watch it. Because there was nothing else on!

Did they come up with anything beyond Oh look, isn’t that interesting/lovely’ . ‘What a lovely day for it’. ‘look up there!’ ?

PropitiousJump · 14/03/2026 22:22

Is it an invasion of privacy given that it's in the public domain - any fluent lipreader would be able to interpret it?

A lot more!

canklesmctacotits · 14/03/2026 22:29

Got away with it? Are deaf people getting away it?

A lot more!

What were the most interesting exchanges?

JacknDiane · 14/03/2026 22:34

Any swearing 🤬

Lots of King Charles saying how nervous he was during the coronation, how he hoped the crown wouldn't fall off, how Harry ruined the day. During Trooping of the Colour he was extremely emotional talking about how William & Kate will have to go through this one day but Kate was very ill at the time. Also Andrew asking William to forgive him & William telling Louis off for misbehaving in church!

Viviennemary · 15/03/2026 13:26

Queen telling them to stop arguing.. And William appearing not to want to reconcile with Harry when looking at the flowers left for the queen. Princess Anne saying something about the Queen being confused and Charles should take over.

Just watched one ... heck of a lot of pointless waffle and padding for a few not terribly startling revelations.

Baital · 15/03/2026 19:22

There was (might still be) a YouTube channel called Bad Lip Reading that was quite funny, they did a version of H&Ms wedding 😁

On the whole I'd take it with a pinch of salt, I don't think lip reading is an exact science.

I agree. I can’t stand all the obsequious stuff about how we all love the RF and what a wonderful person William is. I hope the lot of them are done away with .The impression I get of Charles is of a petulant, self absorbed moaning minny.

Yeah as if AMW is going to choose the front steps of a church in the full glare of the press to ask William to forgive him! A man who behaves like he is the victim in all this.

He would, as he was completely sucking up to him and having a bit of a chuckle as if they are good buddies. I've noticed AMB doing a lot of acting up to the camera to try & show him in the best light. Luckily on that occasion William seemed to be polite but blunt and seemed to know what he was up to

cupfinalchaos · 15/03/2026 20:13

I know the “official” lip reader. He’s almost by royal warrant!

This is exactly what I was coming on to say. That was so funny. But it also shows that lip reading is not particularly accurate where it is not in a one to one, face to face situation.

PropitiousJump · 15/03/2026 20:20

Yes, even in the fictional drama 'Code of Silence' they showed the lip reader had to fill in gaps based on what was most likely to have been said.

W has many more hard yards to cover before he can convince anyone he knows what he's up to in regard to MW.

A dismissive nose-rub can't erase the images of a disgraced MW riding shotgun with him on previous occasions.

RainbowBagels · 16/03/2026 22:01

They are all spending a lot of time allowing their friends to talk to the press about how they never liked AMW and have hated him in fact over the last 20 years. So they are perfectly willing to throw QEII under the bus and make it seem like she was apparently the only person who insisted AMW was protected and enabled all his life. They were all powerless to do anything. They will do anything to protect themselves, apart from actually looking at what happened, reflecting on what the Institution did wrong and making sure no other member of their family is protected and indulged and allowed to behave in such a manner again. They will need to be forced into that by Parliament and public scrutiny.

Recklessismymiddlename · 16/03/2026 22:15

Well to be fair Rainbow, we are meant to be a parliamentary/constitutional monarchy, so I blooming well hope, that parliament starts to do what they are meant to.

I mean we're meant to have been a Parliamentary/ Constitutional Monarchy for 400 years, but Parliament seems to have forgotten that fact. Charles I must be laughing his head back on on whatever astral plane he is currently residing!

Honestyboxy · 17/03/2026 04:12

What came across to me in that dreadful programme full of waffle and obsequiousness , was that if the lip readers were accurate, it is astounding that they have very personal conversations about emotive subjects in full view of the public. Also standing behind or in front of the person they are talking about!
It was astonishing to me that on very important days for the monarchy, concerns about arguments with family members, sore feet and feeling ill seemed to be the chief concerns. They all come across as very self absorbed and whiny. Apart from Kate who seems very aware she’s on show and in public, and Camilla. Both of whom weren’t born into it. I think the born and bred Royals really take no account of the wider picture or take the public much into consideration. They just behave like they’re in their little bubble with all the whiny self absorption that comes with it.

RainbowBagels · 17/03/2026 06:23

I think we're all supposed to feel sorry for them about how hard their lives are, and how's much they are sacrificing for us.

Recklessismymiddlename · 17/03/2026 07:12

I don’t feel sorry for them per se, but I’m in pain daily and it grinds you down. If like Charles was on the day in pain, with a heavy crown on his head being Rich, being a royal, doesn’t stop you being in pain. What surprised me about that, is that there was no preventative pain killers or shot given to help him. But the rest? Suck it up?

Yes Kate and Camilla seem to get it.
