And meet a president that is no different from his brother, who he has stripped of his titles and home etc

A state visit is organised at the request of the government, and carried out with aims of both governments in mind.

It's unlikely that the diplomatic fallout of cancelling would be less than the benefit of continuing.

Agree

Diplomacy means having to deal withpeople you disaprove of or dislike. There is a long history of the Royal Family visiting countries and meeting people who are shall we say "less than desirable" individuals.

It is part of the duty of being head of state and is one they will continue to do even if they dislike the people involved.

Needs must when the devil drives.

Well, if you're going to have our HoS refuse to meet with other HoS's unless they can pass a purity test - that's gonna be most of them.

As long as we are maintaining diplomatic relations with a particular country, the HoS does what he's told by the government and goes and plays nice. If you have a problem with our HoS mixing with Trump, take it up with your MP.

It is unreasonable to expect Charles to decide who is pure enough to visit and who isn't, because that is not his role.

simpsonthecat · 10/03/2026 14:14

I think he would be bonkers to go. Trump was only here recently FFS! And that soft diplomacy didn't work did it? Kate schmoozing him and no time later he's insulting our country and government.

Charles can easily pull a sickie after having a word with the Government.
Do we really want to look like we sanction the US's actions at the moment?

This is not a State visit which is trickier to cancel.

There is a poll in the Independent and 72% think it should be cancelled.

The writers for Yes, Prime Minster said it best.

"All the press, the people and their leaders want to know is who are the goodies and baddies. The interests of Britain nearly always involve doing deals with people they think are baddies. And not helping the goodies occasionally."

Where did you read that it wasn't a state visit?

It has always been reported as one, and it would be surprising diplomatically for it to be anything different, given the recent Canadian state visit.

It is to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence. It is not just Charles invited.

myrtleWilson · 11/03/2026 07:25

It is being reported as a state visit - just because other leaders may be invited to the US by Trump in its 250th celebration year, doesn’t mean any individual visit can’t/wont be an official state visit. Or have you read reports of an en masse joint visit - a G7 style event for HoS/monarchs?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 11/03/2026 07:29

It would be easy enough for them to use his health as an excuse if they wanted to cancel without creating a massive diplomatic row.

GloiredeDijon · 11/03/2026 07:38

I’m sure KC would love to cancel.

However, we still need a semblance of good relations with the orange one.

If we hadn’t gone through Brexit we would be stronger in Europe but we aren’t so the government is trying to manage what is clearly a complete shit show with our supposed biggest ally.

something2say · 11/03/2026 07:41

So much fakery under the banner of 'we have to' it is making me sick.

At what point are people going to sit down and ask, 'wtf are we DOING?'
