Seems fairly standard practise, well for the men anyway. His father, uncle grandfather etc all did a stint m

I wonder if he'll be so inclined, time is it a foregone conclusion that he will do some sort of military service.

I doubt Kate will push him into it. You never know what Will’s thinks though. Depends if he’s dim like uncle Harry, then yes send him!

William was in the miirary - so was harry and charles and his brothers

none of them are particularly bright.

William flew air sea rescue helicopters - a complex and challenging role.

Hope not.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 02/03/2026 15:06

I hope not too .

I’m sure he will. All European royal heirs tend to do some military service. The Spanish crown Princess is in the middle of hers right now.

As is the Dutch crown princess as well.

I think it’ll depend on public opinion on the royal family at the time, and also the health of the older royals. In 10 years when George is 22 and likely to be finishing uni Charles will be 87, Camilla 88, Anne 85, the Duke of Gloucester 91 and the Duchess 89. If they’re all frail and essentially retired by then it’ll leave William, Catherine, Edward and Sophie as the only ones.

I think he’ll do university, and then either do the military if the older royals are in good health or go straight to full time royal if they’re short handed, or need a PR boost that a shiny new one being photographed a lot tends to bring.

He will be Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces when King so doesn't have much choice in the matter.

OverlyFragrant · 02/03/2026 15:37

It is expected of him, yes.
Given that if or when he becomes King, he will be the Head of the Armed Forces, and its members will swear allegiance to him.
It'd important he has knowledge of exactly what it means to serve, seeing as men and women could potentially die in his name.

If George does, will Charlotte as well?

pouletvous · 02/03/2026 15:38

could be a good opportunity to break with tradition

tutugogo · 02/03/2026 15:56

Apparently he’s keen on joining the raf, I’m sure they will let him if he wishes but he won’t be pushed

Is he keen on joining due to family having been in forces though or is it expected of him?

And give the republicans even more ammunition to get rid of the monarchy?

She might, might not. Ann never did. Louis might though, as Edward and he who must not be named did (a bit...)

Lady Louise Windsor is said be considering a military career.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/03/2026 17:01

It’s part of the role to represent the Armed Forces. I would say it is positively encouraged if not mandatory

HershelLayton · 02/03/2026 19:11

It doesn't matter whether he and his siblings serve or not, they'll still end up with a gaudy uniform, a chest full of unearned medals and a rank that competent officers could only hope to attain after years of service. See Edward for details.

CathyorClaire · 02/03/2026 21:30

I hope W is our last 'king' ( I did hope this for C3 but it's clearly not going to happen) and George is free to do as he will.

CathyorClaire · 02/03/2026 21:31

Ann never did

Still parades in the bling, gongs and ranks though...

And give the republicans even more ammunition to get rid of the monarchy?

It's increasingly hard to make a case for retaining it.
