The royal family

Given that Trump has just insulted our war heroes and is trying to buy Greenland when it’s not for sale, do you think that the Government should instruct King Charles to cancel his visit to the USA?

As a Republican from a UK forces family,
I normally shy away from phrases like “war heroes” but I feel really upset today for the families of young men and women who lost their lives in Afghanistan, after Trump suggested to Fox News that NATO troops “stayed a little off the front lines”.

What Trump said is not only profoundly insulting but factually incorrect. The UK in fact suffered the second-highest number of military deaths in the Afghanistan conflict after the United States.

This Guardian article lays out the statistics:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/22/trump-nato-afghanistan-troops

Of course this is all part of Trumps’s plan to disparage and undermine NATO, but if we are going to have a monarchy, and if KC3 is obliged by the government to attend, can he, as Commander-in-Chief of the British Armed Forces, and having served in the Royal Navy and the RAF himself, at least make a stand in an official speech? Few others seem to have sufficient rank or power to do so?

King Charles could start by mentioning Para Joshua Leakey who survived the conflict having risked his own life to save a US Marine and was subsequently awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery.

Trump claims Nato troops ‘stayed a little off the frontlines’ in Afghanistan

President again disparages allies and tells Fox News he is ‘not sure’ Nato would come to US’s defence

Leave him alone. In this instance, he has served two terms in Afghanistan and your vile POTUS has insulted so many military people in so many countries

Anyone, literally anyone who calls him out is worth a lot.

Did you know that in Denmark per capita more serving military died than in any other country? More than any other ally. They sent 9,500 troops which is gobsmacking for a small country.

Yet Trump speaks about them like they are nothing.

Well done Harry for speaking out.

True. Maybe he'll piss Trump off and get kidnapped 😂

Trump is gone in 2029

I think Trump making it to 2029 is extremely unlikely.

Not sure what comes next will be better..

After the cult of personality Trump we may get Vance. Or another Palantir / Theil backed right wing nut. KCIII should indeed cancel the visit & say why. If the UK is too worried about damaging a relationship with America (not Trump) then KCIII needs to have timely D&V.

Baital · 23/01/2026 20:37

It's like your two year old - or teenager - shouting that they hate you when they don't get what they want.

Tempting as it is to do a Google search for the nearest orphanage and arrange to drop them off, or retaliate with the (very long) list of their failings, on the whole the most constructive approach is to shrug your shoulders and ignore it.

Look at the long term. That is probably to divest from the USA militarily and economically, but not flounce off and slam the door. No matter how tempting.

Let Trump continue to weaken the USA, and don't copy his tactics, which will only weaken us as well.

Well said, Prince Harry.

Yes! Bravo Harry!

We can agree to disagree on this.

Geopolitical reality is what it is. I do not think any of the individuals mentioned aside from Elon (due to space being the next theater of war) are relevant to the long-term alliance.

There was no running out the clock on Hitler. UK/Europe can run out the clock on Trump, while simultaneously rearranging their budget priorities if the US chooses to elect another isolationist administration in 2029.

For example, France is yet to pass a budget as the social cuts have made French citizens furious...and that is discounting the additional defense spending France needs to make in this uncertain geopolitical environment. Neither the French politicians nor the French voters are truly embracing what it means to fully fund defense, otherwise they would make the difficult but necessary choices.

Returning late to this post. Yes to agreeing to disagree!

There was no running out the clock on Hitler
But… we very nearly did! Plus it took six years to defeat him, approximately 60 million deaths, the global economy shattered, and had he not decided to attack Russia, I hate to think of the outcome.

UK/Europe can run out the clock on Trump
I fear this is slightly too passive given that Trump supporters are now saying that he simply won’t leave in 2028 and is already talking about a third term.

Can Trump serve a third term as US president? - BBC News

Donald Trump is selling "Trump 2028" caps, and he's suggested there may be a loophole to the two-term limit.

Did Harry say that outloud or was it a remarkably well written statement on his behalf? Good for him. More of it please.

Starmer didn't come across to me as angry and fucked off enough.

Frankly, it's too late for an apology. The words were out of his mouth.

I can't imagine king Charles and Camilla going over there. Firstly there is no smoking area at the white House and secondly I think Charles was in the navy himself, so possibly throwing things about ranting whilst Camilla tries to watch the telly.

Our only hope is Mrs trump. She could get Donald in the night.

1dayatatime · 23/01/2026 23:40

I honestly think that the best person to help get rid of Donald Trump is Donald Trump.

In the space of two weeks he has abducted the Venezuelan President, threatened to take over Greenland against the wishes of the Greenlanders, break NATO apart and now managed to severely piss off those NATO countries that fought and died alongside US troops in the US.

Plus it seems to be the case that his comments have also severely pissed off senior US military commanders as well.

KC should absolutely definitely go to the 250th anniversary of the US, it's just another opportunity for Trump to do or say something else massively wrong/ inappropriate/ generally dick'ish.

jeffgoldblum · 24/01/2026 00:42

I think the government should cancel, Charles is not at peak health and after the insults, I don’t think we should risk sending anyone over there for their safety and our dignity.

Lunde · 24/01/2026 00:54

No, just take everything with a pinch of salt, and be very understanding of a man who is either in the first stages of dementia or suffering from some sort of meglamanic mental disorder.

Somebody I know reckons it is likely both - he worked with mentally disordered offenders and has seen this pattern (and that dementia meds may be causing the odd bruising that Trump keeps getting).

I don't know if we should be understanding of abuse of power though. Given the way that Trump went after Biden question is whether it's time for the 25th Amendment to be enacted. Perhaps there should be a maximum presidential age just as there is a minimum to prevent 80 year olds in power.

Lunde · 24/01/2026 00:56

The King doesn't decide where he goes - the government decides.

I think they will wait until nearer the time as currently 24 hours seems an eternity in the Trump administration.

attichoarder · 24/01/2026 01:06

Yes , I think the visit should be cancelled if Trump does not apologise. Enough is enough , we as a county have appeased Trump for far too long. I think KS’s response today was it excellent , he was emphatic.

wellstopdoingitthen · 24/01/2026 01:20

No the government should simply say that the king is unable to travel to a hostile country.

I wonder if KCIII has any anti-Trump memes or social media posts on his phone.

Purplelimesoda · 24/01/2026 01:42

I think our royal family have done more than enough to accommodate this idiot. I say no the King should not go they have all done more than enough and now is the time to say NO stop rewarding his shitty behaviour and turn our backs on him. He has always annoyed me but this time he's gone to far and we need to say ENOUGH!!!
.

Topseyt123 · 24/01/2026 03:30

Very well said Prince Harry.

At last Starmer too is being unequivocal in criticising Trump's behaviour and has called a spade a spade.

Now just stop pussyfooting around the wanker in the White House!! Cancel the King's visit as a start.

The Royal family pulled out all the stops in courting and flattering this fool on his last visit (after Trump had publicly trashed the King's daughter in law Meghan on a number of occasions).

The much-ridiculed Prince Harry served in active combat. Harry's black sheep uncle (person non grata) served in active combat. The King? Honestly? Probably laughs into his champers at the plebs who fight and die in his name, much as Trump does.

Copperas · 24/01/2026 05:22

Of course he doesn’t!

BreakingBroken · 24/01/2026 05:31

The only thing the American public and politicians deserve is shade! Spineless lot allowing this carnage to continue. Trump and his cronies are person non grada.

RainbowBagels · 24/01/2026 08:44

BemusedAmerican · 23/01/2026 20:19

He's definitely been taking advantage of our bonkers First Amendment.

Shame your President doesnt even respect it ( or it seems many parts of the US Constitution) when he demands the National Guard to be called in to quell protesters, defends the killing of one of them and calls people who tried to overturn a lawful election 'martyrs'? Whats the worst 'crime'? Some privileged British Idiot who doesn't even understand his own family, never mind the US Constitution, or a President who rides roughshod over that Constitution as the very person who promised (twice) to uphold it?

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
The last thing anyone wants or needs is for the UK to fall out with the US.
And I agree with the comment up thread KC is someone Trump might actually listen too.
The government can't call a sicky because William would be expected to step in.

Its too late for that.

He is backing Russia against Europe, is charging us for all arms sent to Ukraine, cut then restored intel, put tariffs on our exports and threatened 25% ones.

How much more do you think we should bow down to Trump? maybe you think we should give him Greenland, let him piss all over our war dead and perhaps offer him Scotland?

Where is our self respect?

Aplstrudl · 24/01/2026 09:20

At least trump doesn’t prosecute his own veterans unlike Starmer who has conveniently ignored what IRA terrorists did and is persecuting British veterans.

Maidenjourney · 24/01/2026 09:23

He gets away with what he does because other countries don’t take a stand or speak out. It’s time this nonsense stopped .

Not for one minute would Charles ever say anything. That's not how they roll. They are just figureheads and apolitical.

The Tories started this and continued it.... Trump rubbished his own soldiers in Afghanistan, called them "losers"

This is what the Govt is actually doing.... rather than what you have read:

Alongside the Remedial Order, the Government is implementing new protections for Northern Ireland veterans, including:

  1. Protection from repeated investigations;
  2. The right to stay at home;
  3. The right to seek anonymity;
  4. Protection in old age;
  5. Protection from cold calling or unexpected letters; and
  6. The right to be heard.
Also removing the protections IRA terrorists had under the previous Tory 'bill.

You might want to look up what's happening to the 6 veterans, now elected democrats, who made a video reminding us enlisted soldiers that they don't have to obey illegal orders. Among other things, Trump has suggested that Mark Kelly (who is a likely candidate for president in the next election) should be hanged.
