The royal family

Christmas Day walk in Sandringham

This is such a strange thing....so the royal family walk along a stretch of path every year and people gather to watch them. These people try to talk to the Wales children and give them presents. They are photographing the children, taking selfies, etc. I think the kids are far too young to do this. It is so odd.

How on earth do William & Catherine think this is okay?!

But then I work in supported living, so am used to behaviours that would seem strange in more mainstream contexts - and support the right of people to follow their own interests as long as they are not a danger to themselves or others.

but we are talking about children here. one is only 7. they should not be put in a position where they might feel unsafe.
I am sure the POW can find better ways to educate them in a safe way.

LidlAmaretto · 30/12/2025 10:57

This conversation isn't just about this deeply odd man and his obsessions though. Its about encouraging other oddballs to join him, to craft an atmosphere where these children are exposed to groups of people shouting their names and luring them towards them with toys and chocolate that then gets thrown away. The children could just walk with their cousins (who this crowd don't care about and don't give presents to or call their names) and wave. Not to mention these are children who grow up with adults bowing to them and giving them everything they want. They are surrounded by the children of the wealthy at all times, then are introduced to the 'commoners' who behave like they are Godlike creatures. William is not open to any level of criticism or scrutiny whatsoever. They are getting a very warped view of the world and their place in it. That has not worked out well for previous generations of Royal children.

Totally agree. This guy, for instance, will reach out to touch them, stare at them a lot, say stupid things about their dead Nan... and generally be a lot worse than others there. He's an obsessive and just my opinion but I still think it's akin to stalking.

IAmKerplunk · 30/12/2025 11:02

I don’t understand the people who take their own kids to these things. Imagine years later seeing yourself as a child on yet another programme about the Royals and seeing the younger you handing handing a cheap teddy bear to multi millionaire royalty 🙈😂 I would wonder wtf my parents were on and why I didn’t get an extra present at Christmas rather than hand over a gift that the prince or princess will hold for 5 minutes only for them never to see it again! Baffling!

Absolutely spot on. When I saw pics of Louis almost staggering under the weight of countless toys, chocolate, presents... it just made me think, what on earth...
He's only 7, does he really understand all this. Doubtful. It teaches them nothing I don't think. Yes, Wm and Kate should show them continually there are people who are a lot worse off than them, people that struggle and have to use foodbanks, homeless charities... but these crowds aren't that. They were almost baying for them, and yes luring them over. Seeing some of the footage that the public filmed was - in my opinion - really awful.

LidlAmaretto · 30/12/2025 11:05

I explained to DD that he probably has mental health issues, just say hello back and walk on
What if, after that, this person called your DDs name, starting to talk about her dead relatives and waved chocolate in her face? If the Wales kids waved, said hello and moved on this debacle would not be happening.

This tirade bears very little resemblance to the actual manner in which the children are brought up, and I can assure @LidlAmaretto they do not get everything they want. They are not surrounded by children of the wealthy at all times. On the contrary the PoW tries very hard to ensure the children mix with non royal children and that they understand life outside their royal prerogative and on the whole, it appears successful.
Kids treat other kids the same funnily enough.
My understanding of the gifts is that they are donated to charity with flowers going to the local hospice.

You ‘can assure’ another poster about the way in which the Wales children are brought up? What are you, an ex-nanny who has forgotten her NDA?

simpsonthecat · 30/12/2025 11:12

@PrincessofWells Do you work for William and Kate or know them, or something?
You talk like you do

CurlewKate · 30/12/2025 11:14

And just because they are rich, privileged and royal does not mean the children aren’t liable to have irrational thoughts and fears “can my dead grandmother really see me?” “what if that man is hiding under my bed?” “Why are they all grabbing at me-what if one of them pulls me away….”
I know people are trying to excuse it-but it really is inexcusable.

CurlewKate · 30/12/2025 11:20

Love that the chocolate that isn’t safe for the royal children to eat is fine for the staff (yesterday) or for poor children (today)

You do know that William and Catherine do that? There was a visit made by William and George not so long ago.

Thank you, yes I do know. And I know about the recent visit. That doesn't mean my opinion is wrong... do that and more of it, but stop letting the children be grabbed, pawed, names called out, hugged, and selfies.

I'm sure the security are well aware of this man and are on alert. You can't ban someone from a public place - imagine if the RF tried to do that - but I do think the contact with Joe Public in general needs to be refined somewhat.

simpsonthecat · 30/12/2025 11:33

Even if he can't be banned, there is absolutely NO reason why William should have taken his 3 children over and introduce them. No reason whatsoever.

You cant ' assure' me because either you don't know and are getting your info from Hello magazine or you work for the Royals in some way, and are breaching an NDA. I suspect it's the former. We got this same story about Diana bringing up the boys to know how privileged they are, taking them to see the homeless etc, yet one of them is in California trying to get us to pay for his security and moaning about his trust fund being cut off and the other one is a billionnare twice over, refuses to declare his tax bill does the bare minimum in the way of Royal ' duties' and is currently kitting out his 4th ' forever home' after getting the taxpayer to stump up for the refurbishments of his other ' forever homes' on the basis they were ' forever homes'.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 30/12/2025 12:01

What i find odd, as children of the 80s both William and Kate would have seen the "don't take sweets from strangers" public service films but are happy for their children to be given chocolates from strangers in the name of the royal family.

Yes. This.

Can you show these pictures?

refuses to declare his tax bill

There is no requirement in the UK for anyone to make public his tax details: they are a private matter between the individual and HMRC

It was from last year's walk which makes it even worse as he was younger. Google Sandringham 2024 and you will see it.

Yes, but when his father has declared the tax he has paid, it is not right that William chooses not to. Obviously something to hide.

I'm stunned that so many posters know exactly what is going through the minds of the children. I think they are more at risk of psychological damage if they read MN.

simpsonthecat · 30/12/2025 12:24

Why would three children read mumsnet? What a strange thing to say

I don’t know exactly what’s going through their minds. But because I have met children, and I don’t think at heart these children are very different from any other children, I can hazard a guess….

Who are the weirdos who come out to gawk and foist presents on already ridiculously rich and privileged people?

Stans. That is, stalker super fans. I’ve been on the receiving end of this kind of behaviour in a previous job where I had a fair bit of media exposure, and honestly the only way to stop some of them is via police warnings & threats of jail time, and a physical security presence.

Makes me wonder if the security services have given appropriate advice here to the Waleses.

I find it baffling to watch. You should NEVER encourage these deluded loons. You can’t reason with them, you can’t humour them (they just want more of you), and you can’t defuse them. All you can do is create distance and involve the police/security early on.

But the Sandringham Stans have been encouraged now. They’ve been legitimised by the royals. It’s a mess.
