RF, William, Kate and cruelty to animals

We don't often hear much about what the RF are up to with blood sports and sports that involve animal cruelty.

There's another thread on her about polo which I had no idea was such a cruel sport.

Yet William's happy to play. I know he believes his life's grift is pretending to save the environment and end poverty.

But in this age of increased awareness, more young people being vegan, or just more people more aware of cruelty, how does the Wales' involvement in cruelty to animals place them for future success as monarchs. Particularly when said younger people don't support them in the same way older people do.

Or is this all going to be underreported, and they'll do the usual shooting, and polo playing, etcetera, widening the gap between their relevance and younger people's expectations.

Out of interest-are you completely cool with blood sports? Or do some members of the RF get a free pass to shoot things and engage in animal-damaging sports and others not?

bluegreygreen · 22/12/2025 12:46

Sorry, I know this is a derail, but a question for those further up the thread who have talked about birds being wasted.

In articles I've read over the last 24 hrs while looking at this, they talk about game from shooting parties being sent to either local or London game markets. Does this not happen? Or is it that it does happen, but some of the meat is not in good enough condition for sale?

It happens a bit. And if you live in that sort of area you tend to get game on your doorstep like courgettes and cooking apples. But a lot of it isn’t in a fit state.

I wouldn't do it personally but I wouldn't make sweeping statements about culling if necessary. Funnily enough my first boyfriend is now a gamekeeper 😂 .Imagine me a gamekeeper's wife 😂 Here in the SE we only have morons exploding sheep with dynamite 😢

upinaballoon · 22/12/2025 17:35

I'm one of the people who said I hoped the birds wouldn't be wasted. It must depend to some extent on where the shot has gone into the bird and how much cleaning it needs. You need one person to sit with a rubber apron on, in the shed, and pluck the bird. Then you need one to draw out it's insides, which is not the world's loveliest job. Then you need a very pernicketty, patient person to go over it and see if there any bits of lead shot in it because it isn't nice to put a forkful of delicious roast pheasant into your mouth and bite down on a piece of lead. I guess the commercial poulterers use machines to pluck and draw, as with supermarket chickens.
Is it possible that if a lot of birds have been shot one day some will go to the kitchen of Sandringham House, some to the restaurant in the grounds, to be part of 'game pie', some to a commercial poulterer, to go out to London etc restaurants, and some just buried because they're going to be too much work to clean up.

Our butcher always advises customers to check for bullets before cooking.

We got a massive apology hamper from Baxter’s once because we had a load of shot in our soup…

Of course you are.

Are you having Edam cheese for Christmas dinner?

I don’t like game either. I still feel guilty that my rigid insistence on good manners meant my dd regularly ate pheasant at her friend’s house because they thought she loved it and it was a treat for her…

Do you include venison in that as a Gamey flavor?

I’s probably eaten venison once before I moved to the US and wasn’t impressed but now I live on the edge of a woodland area and venison hunted from within a few hundred yards of our home makes up the majority of our red meat eaten during the year.

I’ve substituted it for any of my previous recipes using beef - stews, braised casseroles, bolognese sauce etc - and haven’t looked back - it’s so less fatty and I like knowing the food miles are, well less than a mile.

I’ve been less keen on the local wild turkey and rabbit but I appreciate the skill of the hunters and that we don’t let any animal’s death be a waste.

sprigatito · 22/12/2025 23:56

I’d say venison is gamey. That’s why I don’t like it, it’s too rich for me and tastes sort of offaly.

wordler · 23/12/2025 00:01

Also on an economic point - for our local white tailed deer - you get 40-80 pounds of meat per animal - it costs about $75 to have a butcher process the meat for your freezer (and that includes the testing for any diseases etc)

In the supermarket you will pay $10 for a pound of venison.

Was it a particular cut or recipe you’ve tried?

I’ve made both stew and pasta sauces for people who could not tell the difference between beef and venison - apart form it tasted less fatty.

No.

I like my cheese to have more of a kick 😛

I do, yes.

DM served it up once (possibly as a Christmas treat?) but I've never touched it since. Tried rabbit on holiday once and had to - discreetly of course - spit it out.

Does game still get hung until it's high? Even more revolting thought 😝

Baital · 23/12/2025 08:51

Yes, game is hung. So is beef, lamb, and pork.

No, I’ve had it multiple times in various cuts and dishes. I don’t hate it passionately, so if someone has cooked it for me I will eat it - I just find that it has an unpleasant liver-type taste and the texture is strange.

CurlewKate · 23/12/2025 09:44

Supermarket venison is much less gamey than the “proper” stuff. I make a very rich pasta sauce with it that people always seem to like. My real regret is duck-it’s impossible to farm ethically so I can’t have it. And it’s so delicious!

CathyorClaire · 23/12/2025 11:12

Don't like duck either.

Guess that's me off everyone's dinner party lists 😆

HostaCentral · 23/12/2025 12:02

Oooohhh duck.... My favourite. Veal second favourite. Love a venison casserole. Ah well. Obviously a social parish theses days.

Hoolahoophop · 23/12/2025 12:28

@HostaCentral We also love some duck, and venison in our house, veal is getting harder to get hold of.
