https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c14vvv8pnpmoMessage from Charles

He’s doing well obviously, treatments will be reduced. He’s not cured. But it’s sounding like it’s being managed well.

It’s amazing the advancements made in the treatment of cancer over the past decade. From personal experience, I think immunotherapy has made a huge difference.

This is the first thread I’ve ever started, and it seems like a good non controversial topic.

I don’t know about the privacy issue in regards to the RF. I do know my partner’s first reaction to hearing of his cancer was he didn’t want to tell anybody at all at first.

Charles was born to a lifetime of great privilege but I’m not sure that entitles us to know everything about his life. (I’m not a fan of Charles. For example, I think he was too old to marry a young naive Diana and his consequent behaviour was far from stellar.) However, I’m fairly confident he’s spoken to doctors about the best way to use his experience of cancer to make a positive difference.

I do think the royal family members, and any wealthy people for that matter, usually get earlier and faster treatment than the rest of the population.

I didn’t take it so positively , they are obviously not able to cure him and managing a terminal diagnosis. It’s incredibly sad .

What makes you think that?

sprigatito · 13/12/2025 22:29

Yes, such wonderful advances in the treatment of cancer. It brings a grateful tear to my eye when I think of my 85yo dad lying on a trolley in a packed corridor for 23 hours, shaking and vomiting with pain. I’m even more overcome when I recall the time the ambulance took 6 hours to come when he haemorrhaged in the bathroom. I’m so glad our brave monarch has managed to survive all that and more 🙄

What makes you think that?

and @Cupcakegirl13 some oncologists seem to think bladder cancer discovered via tests on prostate. If so, often good prognosis etc, many die with it, not ‘of it’ etc.

MannersAreAll · 13/12/2025 22:33

I think not revealing the types of cancer may be in part to avoid a focus on those types at the detriment to other types in terms of encouraging screening, raising funds and raising knowledge.

Generic encouragement about taking up all types of early screening where available may be a better use of their platform that focussing on the symptoms and screenings available for their specific type.

Might not be, but that was my hunch on part of the reason for not being specific given they've both done that in the same way

SpottyAardvark · 13/12/2025 22:34

I’m pleased for him. As I would be for anyone else in his position.

That doesn’t change the fact that I would vote to sack him & his family and replace them with an elected head of state.

Theunamedcat · 13/12/2025 22:39

If he stated what kind of cancer it was it would give that charity a boost but it would be detrimental to other charities better just say cancer and let all charities benefit

Plus and very importantly he has a right to privacy yes he is king but no we dont "need" to know everything about his medical history he clearly doesn't want people to be googling his life expectancy and speculating weeks/months/years or even putting bets on how long he will last

Alpacajigsaw · 13/12/2025 23:17

I watched and it reminded me I’ve got a bowel cancer screening test to do and I need to book my smear. I’ll do that ASAP.

I think bladder cancer too for no other reason than he’s kept his hair. My dad had bladder cancer and because the chemo is directed right into the bladder he didn’t lose his hair

We all have sad stories to tell. My Dad was 62. I don't begrudge anyone any treatment.

This doesn't surprise me as the number of women I know who don't get smear tests or mammograms is too high. Someone said to me they wouldn't do the faecal test as they're not using me as a guinea pig 🤷‍♀️. Some people like to stick their heads in the sand.

Personally i'm with Germaine Greer on the question ofbthe usefulness of mammographs.

Crispynoodle · 13/12/2025 23:51

I really wish for his and Camilla’s sakes that he would retire now so they could be together and enjoy retirement. Am not a huge fan but it would be a shame to go through all that and not have some time to themselves.

lickingfingertastingfood · 13/12/2025 23:51

I know there are all kinds of whats and buts about these things and how successful they are. You can then add in the patriarchy in to all of this. It's your choice but people should have the knowledge and the option to choose.

My grateful tears are that, when my cancer was detected quite by chance when I was being promptly investigated for something unrelated - it was fast-tracked and treated, and is now being monitored.

I am sorry about your experience, and offer my own to counter a narrative of the NHS on its knees.

And I doubt that KC3 (or his predecessor) is a monarchical HoS has much baring on either experience.

NotReadyForChristmas2025 · 14/12/2025 00:00

We don't need more details they both have every right to privacy with there health. Glad of the update.

CurlewKate · 14/12/2025 03:04

daisychain01 · 13/12/2025 03:15

I know you'll probably get a lot of snarky comments from the Republicans but it's great that KC has a good news health update to coincide with Christmas. I'm sure the RF are feeling relieved. Nice one.

Why would she get snarky comments from Republicans? What a very strange thing to say.

Nat6999 · 14/12/2025 03:45

I wonder if an ordinary person who had to rely solely on NHS treatment for the same type & stage cancer would have such a good outlook & prognosis in the same time frame. He is extremely privileged & will have had the gold standard treatment, no postcode lotteries for him, no waiting months for treatment, he will have had the best of the best. Who pays for his treatment? Hospitals & doctors will have been falling over themselves to get him & Kate on their books, to be able to get them on their CV's.

He’s waited 70 + years to be king - he’s not going to retire 😄

@PinkPanther57 I think they said in the programme last night that 9 million invitations for tests have been ignored.

This is shocking. If I were offered that I’d grab it with both hands. @ajandjjmum was this on the BBC?

I suspect he has plenty of spare time, frankly! And before anybody says anything, I’m not being snarky about his cancer-I’m delighted he’s doing well. I’m being snarky about his workload/ethic!

I absolutely agree. I'm delighted that the King seems to be doing well. However, screening is an option that some of us choose not to take.
By all means, it is fine to let everyone make their own decision - people can do what they like - but it is still very much an option.

  • Calculated by Cancer Research UK. Estimate based on:
  • The number of people not up to date with cervical screening (25–64-year-olds).
  • The estimated number of men not up to date with bowel cancer screening (50/55/60-74-year-olds, depending on UK country).
  • The estimated number of women older than the cervical screening eligibility not up to date with their bowel screening (aged 65-74).
  • Or, as an alternative scenario, women not up to date with breast cancer screening (aged 65-69) plus women not up to date with bowel screening (aged 70-74).
We used data from the individual programmes to generate a minimum estimate of the number of people who are not up to date with cancer screening in the UK. Between the ages of 50-70, women are eligible for multiple screening programmes. Therefore, for these age groups only one programme was counted to avoid double counting an individual who might not attend both cervical and bowel screening, for example. Data on cervical screening coverage were available for all for UK nations. Coverage of bowel screening in men was estimated for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland using data on coverage by gender from Wales. The number of women aged 65-74 not up to date with bowel cancer screening across the 4 UK nations estimated from coverage by gender for Wales and uptake by age group for Scotland. Coverage of breast cancer screening was estimated using data on coverage by age from England were applied to coverage data for Wales and uptake data from Scotland and Northern Ireland. A report with further information on these calculations is available on request from Cancer Research UK.

Stand Up To Cancer launches a Screening Checker

At least 9 million people in the UK are not up to date with their cancer screening. As part of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer, are launching a Screening Checker.*

I agree. I also think that due to Kate’s diagnosis and the age of the children, he’ll want to give William as much time as possible not being King.

StartupRepair · 14/12/2025 21:37

Apparently cancer experts believe Charles not being specific about his cancer will help his message reach a wider audience. In addition to his right to medical privacy.

He is talking about working more next year which indicates that he is tolerating his treatment well.

A routine mammogram picked up my breast cancer when I had no symptoms. Please don't avoid this test.

Why on earth wouldn't you want to test yourself for bowel cancer???

I've had cancer so maybe that makes me want to do every screening available! 😂
