The royal family

Trooping the Colour aka why I'm not suited to royal life

I wee. A lot. Particularly if I think i can't get to a toilet because, say, I'm stuck on a parade ground.

I get hot. Very hot. Even in a thin linen dress can't imagine how I'd cope with a coat dress and hat in full sun.

I get travel sick. Those carriages look like they sway a lot.

I have an inappropriate sense of humour. Lip readers would have a field day.

What about you? Would you sail through a major royal event or would you be like me, an unfortunate tabloid headline in the making?

I thought the King looked very tired in the carriage on the way back - and then had to take the salute at the palace. I hoped the rest made sure he had a quick cup of tea before he had to appear on the balcony!

I agree. He seemed to wince occasionally when he was taking the salute too. Those uniforms must be so uncomfortable and tiring to wear.

Goodness me. Some people are acting as if it was an endurance contest and looking for emotions on the royals that just weren't there.

Suspect I've had sufficient schooling in work meetings to cope with sitting for long periods but would struggle with the heat - and definitely don't look elegant.

Have just been watching some of the US Army 250th anniversary parade in Washington (also President Trump's birthday). Interesting juxtaposition with Trooping the Colour.

Trump finally got his parade. He's been going on about it ever since he attended Bastille Day.

Neither Camilla nor George looked bored. It was only a couple of hours. They all smiled and looked engaged throughout.
I think there's some projection going on here.

I didn't think Camilla looked bored either.

No, @MrsLeonFarrell - Camilla enjoys military events and is really interested.
Just because some people on here found it boring, doesn't mean to say everyone did! Certainly not the principal participants!

We can't help how our faces look at rest either. The late Queen could often look a bit grumpy when she was watching things but I don't think she was actually cross. It was just the way her face was made.

That's another way I'm unsuitable. I'm not really that enthralled by military stuff.

I think you have to be! Look how happy Anne was on horseback on uniform!
I saw film of a military event and Camilla was talking to veterans at some length and was obviously well informed, so she's probably interested.

I expect they are all wearing incontinence pants.

I expect they're not.
Most functioning adults can manage from 10.30 - 1 pm without going to the toilet. Unless they have a disability.

I don't think I could.

Well, most people have to, I certainly do! Teachers, doctors, police, ambulance crew, shop workers, you name it, toilet breaks whenever you like aren't possible. I manage at least 10.30- 1pm every day, because I have to!

Empress13 · 15/06/2025 06:38

I know I’d probably get hiccups during a speech or trip over something. How they do it is beyond me especially the children being bored to death. I would imagine that as soon as they go back into the palace they run around like loons !

Gettingbysomehow · 15/06/2025 06:39

I work in the NHS and I'm so busy I often don't go to the loo all day but after having a year off for surgery I seem to be going every five minutes becsuse I can. Now I can't out of the habit 😱

😂it's the privilege of toilet freedom, isn't it?

His face was quite red when he was taking all those salutes and I wasn't sure if it was the heat or if there was some emotion mixed in, too.

This is a lovely photo from today

I know George is standing on a step here, but those children are tall.

upinaballoon · 15/06/2025 07:30

I didn't think any of them looked bored.

Wide brims are useful as sun-shades. They help against the glare when sun-glasses might not be wanted.
The photo of the relaxed family is lovely. They are in the shade - no sun in their eyes - so George isn't screwing up his face up as he was earlier. I think he was having a bit to say when they were on the balcony, quite animated.

Oh, answer OP. I would have to have only one cup of tea for breakfast, my clothes, hat and low shoes would all be made-to-measure, I would love the marching and the choreography of all the moves and I would sing some of the words to the marching tunes.

upinaballoon · 15/06/2025 07:37

The BBC didn't have hours of preparation like they used to. Their programme started at 10.30, but they had time to have a word with a few people, which I found interesting. I can't remember the name of the young man who carried this year's 'colour' but I will always bear in mind that he said he'd been exercising the arms, because his right arm had to be high for I-don't-know-how-long, carrying the flag. There's always something to be learned about another person's job.

I did think George has shot up until I saw the step.

I couldn't. I'd have sipped enough water to need the toilet. I'm the person who went to the ladies twice during the Eras show missed the diving into the stage part didn't I.

MonetsLilac · 15/06/2025 08:10

The royals don't seem to be constantly sipping water. Maybe that's why they can hang on for a couple of hours.

pinkingshears · 15/06/2025 08:10

@MonetsLilac- 'Opinions vary' as the RF themselveshave been known to say. I thought Camilla looked bored & you didn't but neither of us actually know how she was feeling. Not 'projection' on my part - I love Trooping which is why I've attended in person & would do so again even though I'm aware of what can go wrong.

I was thinking exactly the same while watching it, sooooooo warm it all that gear !

Lots of people can't manage.
