Trooping the Colour aka why I'm not suited to royal life

I wee. A lot. Particularly if I think i can't get to a toilet because, say, I'm stuck on a parade ground.

I get hot. Very hot. Even in a thin linen dress can't imagine how I'd cope with a coat dress and hat in full sun.

I get travel sick. Those carriages look like they sway a lot.

I have an inappropriate sense of humour. Lip readers would have a field day.

What about you? Would you sail through a major royal event or would you be like me, an unfortunate tabloid headline in the making?

The image that totally got me was when the late Queen put her head down during Philip's funeral. Sitting on her own and all you could see was a little black blob. As someone who has been widowed, I could only imagine her fortitude, going through that knowing the world was watching.

Those images of the Queen at Philip's funeral were heartbreaking. A lifetime of not showing emotion in public really helped I'm sure.

Forgive ask the typos apparently auto correct is even worse in the heat.

Held, tights, heat, toilet breaks as PP have mentioned. Also I wouldn’t be able to stop myself yawning.
I used to have seizures thanks to a benign brain tumour (now removed) and would crash over with no warning at all. That would be…interesting…as a royal. I might have gone head first over the balcony. 😂

Heels, even…

Papergirl1968 · 14/06/2025 19:53

And I hate wearing smart clothes. Very little interest in fashion, makeup and hair.
I’d be a terrible royal.

One of my DDs has narcolepsy and donkeys years ago when she was about 12/13 the kids were all talking about what they'd do if they were royal.

DD declared that her narcolepsy would be a bonus for once as if she had to deal with anything boring she could fake sleep and draw the event to an early close.

That started years of jokes when stuff was on the tv where one of her siblings would randomly say "...and this is the point X would fall asleep" during any royal events

I read many years ago that the Duke of Windsor referred to a catheter for very long occasions. I really hope not and it wouldn't be an entire soultion, would it?

Yeah, once he left the RF he was famously less than honest about it all.

MonetsLilac · 14/06/2025 19:58

I'd love it! I love dressing up, and enjoy fashion and style. I love meeting people and travelling round. I have quite a high threshold for temperatures and don't need the loo often.
Yes, I'd be perfect! 😊

JSMill · 14/06/2025 20:04

Don’t forget it was pretty warm in London today. I was thinking that C’s feet must be pretty sweaty in those heels! Do you think she changed into a pair of sliders for the trip home?! I have this image of her kicking off the heels at the earliest opportunity!

bluegreygreen · 14/06/2025 20:37

I thought the King looked very tired in the carriage on the way back - and then had to take the salute at the palace. I hoped the rest made sure he had a quick cup of tea before he had to appear on the balcony!

Yes he definitely did.

I'm laying on my bed at the moment and have just realised how many times I get an itch, so standing up for ages and then not being able to have a scratch would be torture and unless Sketchers bring out high heels, I'd be in trouble on the foot wear front.

That's a lovely photo! Happy and relaxed.

My kids wouldn’t sit still for 2 minutes without arguing.
I would start laughing at the quiet bits
Id be bored to tears for most of it
My face would give away my emotions
Id probably be very grumpy having to wake up and go out in a Saturday when all I want to do is stay on my PJs all day.
I would like to not have the anxiety of whether I locked the door at night

I've often thought of this, particularly in relation to Catherine.

Unlike her, I...
Go bright red when hot
Cry uncontrollably at funerals, weddings, sad stories
Hate small talk
Also want to go to the loo lots when I know I can't
Find it hard to control my face if I'm feeling bored

I'd be terrible at any public events so definitely a good thing I was never going to be in her position!

I think she was teased about her mother’s time working as flight staff, but many of the same skills are required to do a good job of being a working royal.

bluegreygreen · 15/06/2025 00:25

Suspect I've had sufficient schooling in work meetings to cope with sitting for long periods but would struggle with the heat - and definitely don't look elegant.

Have just been watching some of the US Army 250th anniversary parade in Washington (also President Trump's birthday). Interesting juxtaposition with Trooping the Colour.

It seems easy but it's really tiring being on show all the time. No wonder she wears big hats, at least she can dip her head occasionally to get some privacy.

No the big hats for the sandwiches & snacks for the kids

mathanxiety · 15/06/2025 00:37

The obligatory high heels would do me in. I'd tip over.

pinkingshears · 15/06/2025 00:57

Trooping is quite LONG.
I thought KC did quite well but looked VERY tired (& a bit grey complexioned)
Camilla looked bored (as ever). I do think the children do well. Poor George looked fed up, so nice to see the pic upthread of him looking happy & relaxed.
If it would be hard to be a Royal adult at functions, (I need the loo every 2 mins atm and I would have drunk whatever was in those glasses at their feet when they were sat in the stand watching the actual colour being Trooped, it would be much harder to be an older child/teen (when the newspapers wont' leave be)

Hats off to the miliary who were practically perfect, & the Police & Paramedics too. (I was there 3 years ago when the stands collapsed & they were needed!)

CtrlAltDlt · 15/06/2025 01:01

They probably take drugs to stop them moving and let's face it, if there's one person in the country who could get away with pissing themselves and no one say anything to them, it's the king/queen.

Can you imagine? Apparently the balcony isn't very deep and the balustrade is quite low. They do stand very still while they are on it, must be why.

Now I am seeing them all with bare feet in the carriages.

Neither Camilla nor George looked bored. It was only a couple of hours. They all smiled and looked engaged throughout.
I think there's some projection going on here.

It is a lovely photo. I couldn't see Charlotte's dress properly before and it is lovely. A bit old fashioned but I think they do that deliberately with the kids and I think it's a good plan.
