They punctured my already limited faith in their judgement by sticking toady- in- chief Beckham and the self serving Oprah on the top line 😂

Aren't this the lot that had the Henrys in their 'Top 100 most influential' a few years back?

I really do like Prince William's Earthshot.

I think that Earthshot has reframed investing in green businesses from a greenwashing, loss making charity endeavor to a real profit opportunity in innovation that makes the planet cleaner and healthier for all. Notpla (packaging), Mukuru Stoves (cooking for poor households), Colorifix (clothing dyes), Kheyti (greenhouse in a box)...it is amazing when green entrepreneurship is unleashed.

Just like The King's Trust (formerly The Prince's Trust) was slammed endlessly by the naysayers and is now lauded...IMHO, in a decade or so Earthshot will be lauded.

I will shamelessly post about Rio later in the year!

The Earthshot Prize

The Earthshot Prize is the most prestigious global environment prize in history, designed to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years.

Oh my god, with that photoshopped picture of H&M on the front?! 😅😂
He looked like her hairdresser!

@My2cents1975 - thanks, I was reading about that. It's done such good work, and a lot of very good projects have emerged. I'm just glad someone high profile is actually promoting these green initiatives.

Am I being mean to wonder if the timing is just coincidence?

I don’t understand how any royals can be considered philanthropists. Surely one has to earn money to be considered philanthropic for giving it away?

It's not about giving personal money away, it's about endeavours which benefit society, I believe.

Vespanest · 21/05/2025 23:16

Most of the named philanthropists use tax dodges off their capital not the actual "earned money". Thats how they stay so rich. The royal philanthropy is off the backs of the duchies

KateDelRick · 21/05/2025 23:20

"Off the backs of the Duchies"?.
Well, whatever, but Earthshot is excellent imo, and at least these projects are being supported.

It's not an insult it's how it usually works, once you have a large enough asset the interest can be used to do good causes without touching the asset

I never said it was an insult.
I just think Earthshot is a great idea and the projects are very encouraging.

We don't know how much of the 'personal income' derived from the Duchies ends up in charitable bowls but most of the money in royal charitable endeavors seems to come from donations.

It's interesting to see Earthshot somehow spending millions upon millions to award £5m in prizes.

Staff costs alone in the last accounts were close to £4m.

My2cents1975 · 22/05/2025 14:37

I will assume that your question about the usage of funds at Earthshot is genuine. The actual prize is actually listed as the second strategic pillar in the impact report that is on the website that I linked.

The first strategic pillar is "To be the leading global engine for discovering, accelerating and scaling Eco-Innovations."

For example, when Charlot Magayi expanded from her home country of Kenya and entered the Ghanaian market, she needed help with international trade, supply chain & logistics, research & development to adapt her briquette fuel source to the Ghanaian market, etc. The costs alone would be prohibitive to expand, but Earthshot supported this entire expansion process. While some advisors donate services, others do charge a lower charity rate which Earthshot picks up, hence the spend.

I encourage you to listen to the brilliant Charlot Magayi herself.

CathyorClaire · 22/05/2025 16:59

The impact report I've read suggests that while Earthshot may offer limited financial support after allocating prizes it's primary purpose is as a facilitator, matchmaking prizewinners with help, resources and investment rather than substantial direct finance.

The winner you cite for instance was able to expand into malaria resistant briquettes with a grant from a third party.

Anyway. It doesn't seem to appear that direct support for prizewinners' expansion makes a huge dent in donations and expenditure of millions.

IIRC from past years there's a lot of consolidation of various expenditure categories in the accounts and a lot of waffle in the reports but precious little fine detail on where the money goes.

It would be interesting to see a detailed breakdown of the figures.

My2cents1975 · 22/05/2025 17:45

Feel free to pretend that all the advisors who help grow the businesses are free.

Feel free to continue complaining about not having access to journal entries so you can complain about these expenses.

Feel free to be as disparaging as possible of Earthshot, while the rest of us marvel at entrepreneurs like Charlot realising their dreams while making the earth better for all of us.

CathyorClaire · 22/05/2025 19:59

Feel free to come up with actual facts and figures.
