Nothing that we didn’t know already but another review. This time New York Magazine:

https://archive.ph/iIQIK

‘The other truth is that With Love, Meghan is an utterly deranged bizarro world voyage into the center of nothing, a fantastical monument to the captivating power of watching one woman decorate a cake with her makeup artist while communicating solely through throw-pillow adages about joy and hospitality. It is painfully defensive. Meghan comes across as constantly worried about what people will think, and because of it, the show can neither flaunt her unusual life, nor can it embrace legitimate ordinariness. It is at once wildly unattainable, like when she describes the joys of sourcing beeswax from your local beekeeper, and mind-bogglingly basic, as in building a whole segment out of arranging fruit in rainbow order. And it is quite, quite sad — a document created by a woman cursed to a life in which even the safest, blandest, emptiest statements somehow boomerang back around toward cuckoo land.’

Absolutely withering.

Yes, where she claimed she was pursued down the street by members of the public. However, photographic evidence suggests otherwise. Ditto that the publications in the shop all had images of her on the front.

Wholefoods doesn't sell publications as Harry claimed they did in Spare. Another one of his crocs of shit.

Such liars!

Why is he there ? In what capacity? He's not a working royal, I don't understand why he is there shaking hands with people who obviously made a great contribution in combating the fires? What did Harry do? He should be honouring them not them being flattered to be photographed with him. He really still does want to be 'royalty' doesn't he? He is beyond awful.

Edited

It’s appalling. Clownsville. As I said earlier dim, dim, dim. Throw in a large dollop of entitlement (note the word ‘title’ in that word) and that explains so much of the mess of this couple’s actions.

CathyorClaire · 09/03/2025 20:24

Omg- puff peice from people at how wonderful Meghan was to film with. It’s embarrassing.

Bet she read that one 🤓

CathyorClaire · 09/03/2025 20:37

I wonder if MM was determined to do a children's party because the Middletons are known for having a children's party business.

The business went tits up leaving a lot of creditors out of pocket.

Rachel might be desperate but I doubt she wants to mirror that bit very closely.

CathyorClaire · 09/03/2025 20:42

Whatever the fans say, they most definitely didn’t want out.

I'd love to know what they make of Harold's generous offer to parachute in for emergency ribbon-cutting when Papa and SIL were diagnosed.

FarmerDramaLlama · 09/03/2025 20:48

The whole cottage drama showed it was just about money and prestige. A house that lots of other members had lived in and been fine with wasn’t good enough for them. And getting Oprah to be shocked and appalled by it was particularly low.

AtIusvue · 09/03/2025 20:50

The worst of it is- she’s already filmed part two.

Had NF waited to commence filming after the first set of 8 episodes went out they could have taken on the advice seen from the reviews.

For example:

  • multiple articles have highlighted that she works better when learning skills from a professional chef and not when she is in teacher mode
  • Filming in another house feels inauthentic (she has a cottage on her grounds, she could have filmed there, or in an outdoor kitchen hem in the garden)
  • The lighting too bright, too many feel good songs
  • Too much praise for meghan. The producer actually thanks her for giving him a cup of coffee making out she had done something huge.
  • practice her knife skills and develop better recipes
  • Less outfit changes. No more white in the kitchen. Tie hair back. Less polished look.
  • Need to maintain eye contact and look less skittish
  • Dont make everything look like a hustle for As eve products.
  • Harry needs some more involvement- maybe coming in at the end to try things
  • Show labels on the items your are using. Don’t make out you are picking everything from the garden
  • Unless you’re an expert at the dish, don’t teach us
  • Stop wrapping everything in bows and adding a label

But this won’t happen. It will have been filmed just as the other episodes were!

Although I’m sure the editing will have to change. Less music etc. But everything will be just as bad.

So the car crash will continue. It’s NF own fault. They never learn.

MrsLeonFarrell · 09/03/2025 20:53

The New Yorker magazine article is interesting but I'm not sure I agree with the conclusion entirely.

"This is also what makes it so tragic. At every point, Meghan seems desperate to avoid criticism and to never say anything that might give the appearance of distinction or notability. The show’s title feels entirely sincere; all she wants is to be loved, and she’s making a bid for that affection by offering up her own love to a vast and impersonal Netflix viewership. But she’s so cautious, so focused on superficialities, and so unconscious of her disconnect from everyday life. She comes off, in short, like a member of the British royal family: afraid of showing vulnerability, obsessed with appearances, and seeking affirmation from a public she cannot be part of. Nothing could be weirder or more depressing."

I do think Meghan finds criticism hard but I disagree with their characterisation of the Royal family because it seems outdated. I think Charles, Camilla, William and Catherine are far more open to showing vulnerability and less worried about appearances than the late Queen was. I think they are also really clear on how different their lives are from those of the people they meet. It helps that neither Camilla or Catherine were born royal and seem to have lots of common sense and patience with their more emotional husbands.

I don't think they care about content.

I do think they're gaming the Harolds.

As I said above the timing of the next (already in the bag) release reflects the end date of the original deal. IMO it's likely to be more of the same, generating similar negative reviews but still driving attention, views and comment.

NF got the big one in the doc as they always intended.

She wanted an estate so she couldn’t appreciate that what she had been given was priceless.

They were (reportedly) offered a country house as a wedding present from the Queen. But I don't suppose she'd have fancied rural Norfolk or Gloucestershire or wherever was suggested.

They wanted to live in Windsor Castle but were told no .

It’s a ridiculous Hallmark characterisation of the British royal family with no foundation in reality. The reason why Meghan Markle was such a bad fit with the RF is because she IS all of those things (except possibly the one about not being able to be part of the public) and they aren’t.

Vespanest · 09/03/2025 21:59

realistically for Netflix if a rating hit is not possible then a show that draws attention even if negative is better than the series that Harry brought to the table.

MidnightTales · 09/03/2025 22:19

One further thought on the New Yorker magazine. The writer calls it “quite, quite sad” - the desperation to appear so loved up, relevant and relatable. And in a way it’s true.

(But then again Meghan Markle didn’t show any mercy to the Windsors or the British taxpayer for that matter; taking their titles, their eldest son and their £ millions whilst putting a great fat two fingers up to them, walking out and slamming the door behind them. Pretty ruthless).

Ohpleeeease · 09/03/2025 22:25

I wouldn’t be surprised if NF gave her another contract. The programme looks like utter drivel from the little I’ve seen but it made their top ten, and if the next series performs better the dopey NF executives who agreed to the initial deal may think it has potential.

I do understand that people are curious but every viewing the show gets boosts its figures and makes a new contract more likely.

Once people have got the measure of it they will not continue watching.

Baital · 09/03/2025 23:39

I think it's quite smart to divide the series into two (OMG!!!! A second series!!! to the fans). The first half gets the attention. The second half tests the genuine interest.

She most definitely DIDN'T take the eldest son. If she had, all the "it's not fair, I married the spare" complaints wouldn't exist.

MayaKovskaya · 10/03/2025 06:54

If she'd bagged the elder son she'd be thrilled to bits and living the dream in palaces. Not making bath salts and putting dried flowers on sandwiches

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 10/03/2025 07:01

No chance she’d have flounced either!

No way! She'd have made sure that others curtseyed, as well. Something tells me that the family and institution wouldn't have been mocked.

Yes, I agree. The curiosity factor will be missing. Viewing figures have already dropped off after less than a week. Even if the show somehow does get renewed, it won't be the sort of open ended production deal they got 5 years ago.

glitterturd · 10/03/2025 09:07

Number 9 on Netflix.

Why is it rated PG?

Treeleaf11 · 10/03/2025 09:11

I don't think it's had good viewing figures if the Most Watched Is correct. Released last Tues peaked at 6 now down to 9. considering all the publicity that doesn't seem great.
