Meghan’s show IS something new and different.

So we have it wrong. THIS IS an entirely new format for a cookery/lifestyle show. Because it isn’t a cookery/lifestyle show. This is Netflix first foray into the world of informercials and they are doing it in NF style; meaning a big budget and a slight twist.

So With Love, Meghan is a 5hr advert for As ever and Meghan Sussex. But what makes it different; is it has been disguised as a lifestyle show and there’s no direct sales. It’s the soft sell…..very beige and subtle.

So every recipe and story Meghan shares, is designed around an As ever product. Even conversations with friends are designed to either sell Meghan or a product.

For example. In Ep 8, she makes shortbread with edible flowers. A packet mix of shortbread with edible flowers is now on the As ever website. Now on the show, we don’t see her open the box. But what we do see, is her giving a very quick run through of a basic dough recipe and then tell the viewer they can just use shop bought. The majority of the time isn’t spent in the baking, it’s spent on the decorating with edible flowers.
This is by design. All the baked goods she’s shows you on the programme, she says things like ‘I don’t enjoy baking’, ‘I’ve never made doughnuts before’, ‘ I only learned last week to make focaccia’ ‘I don’t like measuring’
So while viewers who are expecting to watch a cookery show, are flummoxed by someone with such little baking skills teaching us- it’s because it’s an advert and she’s selling the idea that the baking part isn’t important. So when the As ever baked goods mixes appear after the advert goes out, people will want to buy. Because they know that even Meghan doesn’t like baking. That it’s ok to skip that part, and focus on the decorating and gifting part.

This is soft selling infomercials. It’s a Netflix/QVC hybrid. She is directly selling you the idea and lifestyle, but softly selling you the products. You find out what these products are, after the show.

More examples-
Ep 1 where she makes an Epsom salt bath mix (As ever TM pending). The honey and ginger tea she shares with her friend Daniel is on the As ever website. Teapots are also intended to be sold. The raspberry jam that she uses in the cake she bakes (which again, is a very basic mix and she runs through quickly- because we know she wants to sell packets of the stuff) is now available in the website. As is the honey she used for the cake syrup.

So Ep 2, where we see Meghan make kids party bags. Included are kids gardening tools (which is under the As ever TM application) a honey stick (TM application ) and plant pots (TM application)

Everything is for sale. When in Ep. 7 Meghan puts shop bought croissants in a basket and decants jam into little ramekins, a quick look at the TM application confirms that these are all items she intends to sell under As ever.

How does the soft sell look?

Take for example the jam on the show. The label isn’t on the jar, so it’s not directly selling the brand, As ever. But it’s the same jar shape and we know that it’s raspberry because the cake is decorated with fresh raspberries on top, indicating the jam used. Or the crepe are served with the jam and fresh raspberry’s. It’s all very subtle. The raspeberry jam product then drops straight after the show.

The stories she shares are designed to sell too. For example; her memory of her gran making apple butter- she has fruit butters under her TM application.

Even conversations with friends are designed to sell not only Meghan (how wonderful she is) but they are designed to introduce products in the As ever line. So in Ep 5 we see Meghan’s friends Kelly and Abby discuss Meghans love of spicy condiments - these are under the As ever TM application. We also see Abby discuss Meghans love of flowers and how she helped her in her floral business. From the TM application, you can see it is As Ever’s intention to sell fresh flowers and plants. It’s also why we are given floral demonstrations with ‘supermarket’ flowers.

Conversations with her friend Vicky too in Ep 7, about how Meghan loves a polished skin look, while making face masks- again, we see As ever intends to sell non medicated skin products from the TM application.

The show is a practical demonstration of how to use her products, but the products are released after the advert. When you cross ref the TM application items with what was seen on screen, you see clearly that everything is designed for a sale. Crockery, candles, baskets, wrapping paper, jam etc.

Another tell that this is an infomercial hybrid, is the fact that they have said more As ever items will be released seasonally. Why? What’s seasonal about honey and ginger tea and crepe mix that it’s to come out in spring? These are store cupboard items, not seasonal products.
What they actually mean is, when a new advert comes out, new products will be introduced and added to the collection.

This is why all the press reviews for the show mean nothing. NF won’t care that’s it’s ridiculed. We have all just watched the advert they wanted us to watch. What they want is for it to translate into sales for As ever. It really doesn’t matter how much critical acclaim the show gets, as it’s just a vehicle for the products.
Additionally, we know from the TM application that As ever wants to enter the podcast world. So her new podcast will be in furtherance to the brand and selling the products. But again, it will be a soft sell, not direct.

So it IS a completely new style of cooking show. It goes beyond product placement but isn’t direct selling. I think meghan and NF think they have been very clever. At some point everyone will figure out these are just adverts and work out that every recipe, conversation and story, is linked to an item that you can buy on the As ever website straight after the show.

She’s not trying to be Martha Stewart, she wants to be the new Kathy Ireland ……Meghan Sussex. That’s why there’s been a name rebrand. It’s trying to copy the Kathys mega brand (huge in the US, unknown here) but direct selling her own products….but in a 2025 Netflix kinda way.

So the purpose of the informercial was to

1- introduce the name Meghan Sussex. That’s why they’ve included the car crash ticking off Mindy got- because at least it got her new brand name in. It’s the new Kathy Ireland.

2- To sell the new Meghan Sussex image. So throughout each episode, her friends fawn over her and tell her how amazing she is at everything- cooking, hosting, flower arrange etc.

3- To soft sell the lifestyle wirh generic, no label products first, then find out what the As ever products are after. I’m sure this is a way to get around not having to list the show as an advertisement. That’s also why the name of the show and her product line are different. So it’s not seen as traditional advertisement.

With her appearance on Drew Barrymore, she’s confirming the new brand name, confirming that she’s this super nice, working mom and that she has products to sell you.

Absolutely shameless and so underhand in my opinion……but it might work.

There is so much argument on here about the use of titles vs distance from RF, I think it’s quite easy to understand and doesn’t really constitute a point of debate at all.

  1. It is clear that MM/MS needs everyone to know that the RF is oppressive and toxic and she is too good, pure, free, modern and independent for that malarkey.

  2. She will retain the use of her title and in fact will use and flaunt it in every way possible in her new ventures because it is her title, and nobody has taken it from her thus far.

Now, if you’re someone with any genuine smidgen of integrity, you’d say 1) and 2) are mutually exclusive, you can’t have it both ways.

However, if you have no integrity, then actually 1) and 2) can totally coexist. Simple as that. There is no internal moral struggle there!

Going back to @LipglossAlly and some other questions about why a non-MM fan still engages and comments on a show that can be ignored…. I read these threads because I learn so much. I also quite enjoy seeing how this pathetic groundbreaking marketing concept will unfold. Never in the history of selling stuff has there been such incomplete, unreliable instructions relating to a batch of unknown, unavailable products. I think there will be reasonable sales upon launch. The irony is interesting.

I believe MM/MS is likely to have bullied her staff. I don’t think she has taken any advice from the people below her, which is a shame.

With this branding, I’m guessing the products must be in the luxury range. It would be unacceptable to offer bulk-buy discounts on price or put them on the clearance shelf. I’d love to read the labels on the packaging.

@GiveMeSpanakopita It's just another sign that Meghan doesn't know what she is doing. She has obviously been to a few Michelin starred restaurants and seen the edible flowers. Her thought process sees the flowers as the 'elevated' part of the experience not the hours of fucking about with the food in the kitchen beforehand. She uses the flowers as her shorthand for 'elevated'. I genuinely believe she is that shallow and appearances are everything.

It's clear she isn't really a foodie and probably didn't eat any of the stuff she produced. Neither did her guests.

Edited

But in the Michelin restaurants, the flowers are usually edible ones, either they taste good or they taste of nothing and are delicate enough that you kind of sweep them up with other forkfuls and don't notice. Whereas Meghan entombs every dish with so much withered plantation that it's almost an act of biological warfare. I mean, presumably her guests aren't expected to eat that shite, it'd be like eating pot pourri. Are they meant to push the foliage aside or would that risk their receiving a Death Stare from the Culinary Medusa? And finally if you're not meant to eat them, and can't keep them (because who wants tiny dead flowers covered in hummus as a keepsake?) then why on earth does Meghan's team seem to think that your average Joe or average Jane is going to pay $15 plus shipping for a jar?

I suppose it'll remain a mystery.

@elessar I don't think Kaling flubbed her line, the series is very stilted and overedited so I suspect each scene had a tediously large number of takes. So, If Kaling had misspoken she'd have been made to do it again and again til she got it right. I think she was scripted to 'mis-speak' so that Meghan could correct her and 'socialise' the rebrand of Meghan as Meghan Sussex with the audience. The whole exchange was supposed to be off the cuff and natural sounding. But because Meghan is clearly incapable of relaxing, ever, it all came off as more stilted and cringe than Emma Watson as Hermione in the early Harry Potter movies. And that's why it stands out so awkwardly.

MonteShitshow · 16/03/2025 10:50

Can the flowers go inside the jars of bath salts? Or in wedding confetti?

No, I think they're aimed squarely at the 'affordable luxury' market. A market that has ballooned since the advent of Instagram, affordable luxury is products aimed at middle and lower middle income female consumers who can't afford genuine luxury and designer brands, but still want to achieve an aspirational looking aesthetic. If we go back to my previous example of a midwest mom, 30s/40s, college degree and lower middle/middle income white collar job (health administration, insurance claims processing, local government) which she juggles around bringing up her 2/3 kids and a DH who works full time. Our heroine isn't going to buy a Birkin handbag because she can't afford one and even if she could, she thinks it's dumb to spend so much money on an accessory when she could use it for the home, the kids or a family vacation. But she still wants a little self-esteem boost when she has a rare night out with the girls, so she might get a discounted Aupen or By Far bag instead.

That's Meghan's target market, I think. The problem is that this audience segment tend to be quite time poor, and also, pretty smart and savvy as a consumer. So whether they have the time/desire to waste precious hours and minutes leaving tea out in the sun for a few days rather than, you know, cracking open a jar of Lipton and drinking the tea then and there, is debatable.

Also, they tend not to have beehives.

I agree. I also think another major problem is that "As Ever" has already been 'launched' and the NF show has been and gone, but nobody knows exactly what market segment she's aiming for or what the price point is. That's really terrible brand management. Surely you need a clear brand image right from the start?

DelectableMe · 16/03/2025 11:18

Pancake mix isn't very aspirational, so I think it's definitely aimed at a lower income market who just want to be luxury adjacent.

@SpreadingJammyTodgerLove Here is something of an explanation. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/royals/article-14469815/meghan-sussex-royal-protocol-preferred-name.html

From this I take (because of the title ) they are allowed to use Sussex as a "shorthand surname." This is within protocol which apparently is a bit fluid.

As to what the US would recognise as a legal surname , given they (US) don't have titles , I suspect they need to use what's on the birth certificate / marriage certificate / passports etc. But I don't know. Perhaps @BemusedAmerican can shed some light.

So it seems to me, certainly if they were in the UK , they could use Sussex and I assume in the US for general use.
Why Meghan wants to do it - different matter . I know what she said and who am I to know her thinking. .... 😉

But Jammy - no lawyer me.

American here. She can use the Sussex title unofficially. Anyone in the US can ask people to call them whatever they would like as a nickname, professional name, etc.

However, MM is an American citizen so her LEGAL name is a matter of US law. Legally, she can change her name to virtually anything she wants in the California courts, as long as she isn't changing it to evade creditors, so she can legally become Sussex, Mountbatten-Windsor or anything else. But unless and until that is done her legal name remains Rachel Meghan Markle.

glitterturd · 16/03/2025 11:31

@JADSagree Meghan has very weird and dated ideas of elevation. It's all about the foraging here and eating what the chef has " found" that day - nettles, forest ashes, dandelion and hogweed to give a few of the delicious things on the lunch menu near me. 🙄

NormaMajors1992coat · 16/03/2025 11:46

What do we think will be Meghan’s next incarnation when this fails?

So far we have had philanthropist, activist, writer, podcaster, tv producer / development exec, entrepreneur-founder-businesswoman, tv presenter / chef, lifestyle guru, mental health advocate.

Which will be the next profession requiring years of training and experience that Meghan will assume she can just do?

My guesses: interior or graphic design, house renovations (preferably for a tv show). Presenting a travel show, or documentaries about inspirational women, or the arts (“India with Meghan” “Monet Monet Monet with Meghan”. I’m sure she would have loved “When Meghan met Hillary” but now that her reputation is in the toilet the inspirational women will have to be dead unfortunately. So “When Meghan Met Aretha”.)

Some kind of dodgy therapy / wellness shtick but importantly without any psychology / counselling training. In a similar vein, agony aunt. Maybe something to do with raising children or home education, again without any pesky qualifications getting in the way. This has the added bonus of pissing on the PoW’s chips. Likewise photographer.

Film director. Or maybe she will write a screenplay (I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s tried this already).

Or maybe she will make her fortune on those apps where you play solitaire online.

Ah, that’s a very clear example there, I think I might have missed your post on this. I may well fall into this category, where daily luxury is out of the question but occasional treats can stretch to a jar of As ever raspberry spread and a tin of dried flowers with a long shelf life.

I do prefer a solid quality product in less beautiful packaging to one which is mediocre quality in a box that’s designed for display though. I usually buy well established brands eg Lea & Perrins or a good-brand yeast, although I’ve made the switch to M&S ketchup as that’s far better than Heinz. I wonder if the plan is to convert long-time customers to switch to As ever for their jams and honeys etc … in which case the taste and ingredients will need to surpass those of familiar brands.

Or maybe some might decant their favourite products into As ever jars when they’ve run out. I hope it’s as eco-friendly as possible, the stuff that they’re manufacturing.

Also maybe some mass market yoga type exercise programme. I mean it’s several years behind the trend but that appears to be what she’s aiming for.

Do dried flowers count as one of your five-a-day...?

glitterturd · 16/03/2025 12:19

It's a very interesting concept - what actually drives people to purchase? I actually am put off by anything which is linked to a celeb eg any perfume or beauty product. The same goes for clothing lines. Have I ever bought food items with a celeb name ? I buy ranch dressing from Paul Newman because to me it is an authentic American taste and his chipotle one. I do buy food items based on their geographical origin eg Dundee marmalade , Baxter's beetroot or shortbread made in Scotland. I was interested to read @GiveMeSpanakopita's analysis of Meghan's market in the USA. Americans ime tend to be very conservative in their choices and also always a bit on the tail of European trends. I think decorated food is not an aspirational thing here - every chav ( oops) momma has a balloon arch and a grazing table now. A platter? Ha - not enough. In the UK it tends to be the least well endowed financially who follow these trends eg Stacy Solomon labelling and decanting all her products or Mrs Hinch. I understand Meghan is not aiming at the UK market but to me it seems old fashioned, overpriced but then this may well suit the American market. Meghan will end up in Kohls with the other " designer" cheap ranges there.

DelectableMe · 16/03/2025 12:21

I think that Meghan's supporters, followers and fans are full on royalists. It's the cachet of the royal titles and being royal adjacent.
Those of us who aren't in thrall to that can step back and judge her or what she says and does.

MonteShitshow · 16/03/2025 12:54

I think I have to watch an episode :) I’d never have thought of putting flowers in the jars if not for @glitterturd .

A Jam jar of flowers counts as a serving of veg. More foliage = more roughage.

Overhaul54 · 16/03/2025 12:56

I didn't mind the actual content, despite it being basic. It was all done to look beautiful and it achieved that.

The problem is not being able to watch more than 10 minutes because she is so utterly cringe it made me embarrassed to watch. The underlying tension of making every detail perfect was stressful too. She may have been smiling and over enthusing but it looked no fun.

Someone who actually makes it look easy would make the concept work. I think she was aiming for Nigella but hasn't got enough identity to make it work.

smilesy · 16/03/2025 13:13
