Selfies with Charlotte

This morning, I came across a video on TikTok from Sandringham this weekend where Princess Charlotte was asked for a selfie by a woman in the crowd, and she agreed. Then, another woman asked for one, and Charlotte did the same.

I find it so strange that a 9-year-old girl is being asked for selfies by fully grown adults. I get that she’s royal, and for some people, this might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see her in person, but still, it feels a bit odd, right? What do you think?

@Extiainoiapeial sorry if you are unable to see how the conversation has gone 🤷‍♀️

Sorry if I don't have a clue what you're on about.

How does Meghan's clothes and jewellery have anything to do with the subject in hand? Do enlighten me!

You keep saying people who want to buy a dress or something that Meghan wears, is the same as people camping out overnight to give royal children selection boxes and toys. You've mentioned it more than once and it's beyond me, you're the only one saying this, should I be coveting a Cadburys selection box or summat?! 😅

RF could publicly say, ‘for ethical and security reasons, as a blanket policy if we do a walkabout, all walkabout gifts of flowers or food will be passed at our expense to local charities. Their donation details are XYZ if you want to donate to help them directly.’
That would probably calm it down.

Excellent idea. At least then the children who will appreciate them will get gifts and selection boxes on Christmas morning. Although it doesn't take a genius to work out that maybe giving food and toys to a children's hospital or to a homeless charity would be more appreciated. I doubt it's what these people want to do.

ToomanyMilesAway · 28/12/2024 18:21

@Extiainoiapeial again you don't seem to have picked up on the most obvious connection between the two actions. Can't explain it in more simple terms. As for you seeming to think that I think you should be coveting Cadburys chocolate? 😂 where has that bizarre idea come from? 😂😂😂

I think the whole thing has become really inappropriate. What used to have been a simple stroll to church has turned in to a zoo with the children as the exhibits. I saw them on the news; people were shouting the children's names and screaming like deranged fans. Get a grip fhs. And don't subject children to this nonsense in the first place.

Not to mention giving them gifts and food that could have been laced with anything.

That's what got me too, @Beechashwillowmaple
There have always been folk who'd call out, though usually it was just to shout "Happy Christmas" or whatever, but the shrieking and howling's getting a bit silly - and worse, it encourages others to do the same in case they don't appear "keen" enough

velodrome · 28/12/2024 19:25

I think if I were William I’d be thinking now we live in a social media age there is less and less need for walkabouts where random people are able to get up really close to the RF. After Charles dies and William is King that is a natural break with the QEII way of doing things.

The future RF can see the people they want to see on planned visits and post all about them on SM afterwards. this Christmas walkabout is a particularly good example, only very very highly motivated people are waiting outside a church in norfolk to see the RF on Christmas Day, surely.

Just explain it to me. I've asked twice or more. Chocolate is me clutching at straws to understand this very strange comparison

What does buying a dress or a copy of one that Meghan wears have to do with royalists camping out to give toys and selection boxes to royal children? My point has always been it's wrong to use the children like this for PR

I imagine you don't know the answer yourself, you say you can't explain it in more simple terms yet you have not yet explained it!
Bizarre.
Totally

ToomanyMilesAway · 29/12/2024 11:59

@Extiainoiapeial you seem to imagine quite a lot of stuff that is wrong especially about me. How odd !

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 29/12/2024 18:30

U honestly can't see how or why the royal children would be allowed to keep all that choclate?? And... There is simply no way of knowing if someone had injected somethings nasty into one

upinaballoon · 29/12/2024 22:49

Extiainoiapeial · 28/12/2024 11:47

Is that correct? It's just I've read on here posters who say their relations went or they went, they never mentioned security checks. Do they do that for those that camp overnight too?
Good if so.

It's become a circus and is not now just the king and Queen and heir going to church... everyone and his brother were there, about 50 of dim and distant relations of royals! All too much.

Well, let's ask. Is there anyone out there who went this year? Did you have to go through a gate which had several police officers around and did they have a glance in a bag, and were any people frisked?
On the few times I've been you can go through the gate when you've been checked, into a grass field which has trees in it and the path from the house to the church runs through it.
If people camped out I am guessing that they camped out on the grass on the other side of that gate, and had to be checked just the same after they'd washed and dressed and done their teeth and put the rouge on and been to the loo and had their breakfasts and nipped down to the big gates and taken selfies with them in the background.

I’m not a royalist, neither am I anti monarchy or anything and I personally think it’s utterly disgusting to watch the people who are there to talk to/shake hands with the royals etc pointing camera phones at them and talking to them through their viewfinder etc - it’s just such a horrible thing to see. They want to capture a moment? They’re not having the bloody moment! I just hate it! I don’t understand why people can’t just be there to shake hands, wave or exchange a few words without having to hold their cameras up and film people like they’re in a zoo. I wish it would stop. Hearing this… that’s just a new low to me. Honestly, I despair.

I think the comment about them being allowed to keep gifts up to a set value is a legal thing. Legally they can keep it. Doesn't mean they actually will keep it.

The RF probably don't want to admit they ditch it out of politeness. I imagine some of the people who are out to cheer them on a would be incredibly hurt at the thought of their gifts being tossed.

Extiainoiapeial · 31/12/2024 06:17

Maybe those people should think their actions through with a modicum of common sense because it would be obvious that the royal children will not be scoffing chocolate handed out to them, by a complete stranger. But their deference to anyone royal knows no bounds does it ...

I saw Beatrice's little stepson was clutching flowers and chocolate too, so it seems anyone will do, as long as they have some sort of tenuous connection to the royal family

I think it should be spelt out to these people that any gifts should be directed to a particular charity and not handed out on the church walk... It is only going to get worse

LaMarschallin · 31/12/2024 09:54

And someone (you, maybe?) "spelling it out" to them will make them see the light, will it?
If being on MN has taught me anything (and I suspect other SM would reinforce that lesson) it's that people are much more likely to double down on their opinions/actions when told they're wrong.
How many people have changed their opinion on H&M one way or another (an appropriate example for the RF board) after people have spelled out how wrong they are here?

I'm not sure why "it's only going to get worse". We keep being told that support for the RF is on the decline and their fans are mainly older people who, I've seen it said here (quite gleefully, at times), will be dead soon.
So, fewer people should attend and/or give gifts, surely?

Extiainoiapeial · 31/12/2024 10:35

I am on a discussion forum.... discussing and giving opinions. Much like you maybe? No one is going to take any notice of little old me. Opinion, just opinion.

Yes, I think it will get worse. Gifts, choc, selection boxes will increase, because enticing the royal children over with those worked, and selfies demanded, it seems to me lines have been crossed.

Just my opinion. How much nicer and to be frank, more normal would it be to even have donation boxes available there for a local charity.

Needanewname42 · 31/12/2024 10:41

The people who take things are hoping to gift them to the RF not some random charity.
Hence I doubt charity boxes would work.
And so many are card only it's easy to pick up a couple of selection boxes with the shopping. Who could be bothered to transfer £3 or 4 to a charity?

Extiainoiapeial · 31/12/2024 10:43

Yeah, those royal children really need those chocolates, they are so deprived!

LaMarschallin · 31/12/2024 13:03

Extiainoiapeial

Quite a lot like me, no doubt, although I tend not to give prescriptive opinions about what should be "spelt out" to people who, for example, want to give gifts to the RF.
Not really my problem and I'm sure the RF will be able to manage if more and more people flock to see them using selection boxes as bait.

Extiainoiapeial · 31/12/2024 13:21

Take away the words 'spelt out' then, I take that back
..and make it 'advised to' or 'suggested'.
Maybe that's better
