And the uptight, rigid, overly formal, cold- is a trope used against WASPs. So they knew what they were playing into when they did that, they were catering to an American audience.

How many times have we all under dressed/over dressed for an event? …. least we weren’t called out in front of a worldwide audience for it.

Hosting requires you make all your guests feel comfortable, whatever they are wearing, eating, drinking etc. It’s bad manners not to. Why her friends call her the prefect host I don’t know

The pair of them backed the wrong horse (excuse the pun!) Hollywood is dying on its sorry arse and is being exposed for the cesspit it is, the Hollywood glitterati are not held in esteem anymore as the election proved, plus many of them probably have their lawyers on speed dial if recent revelations are anything to go by and are quaking in their Gucci boots. I wonder if H&M ever think maybe royal life wasn’t so shabby after all…..

thenightsky · 11/12/2024 20:11

Well, I've watched half an hour of Polo and can say its pretty bloody boring. Won't be carrying on.

I suspect in their hearts they would go back in an instant and be grateful for what they had. But they have taken a very public position and can't go back on it.

JSMill · 11/12/2024 20:29

@BigWillyLittleTodger that makes total sense! I hadn't thought of it like that before.

CathyorClaire · 11/12/2024 20:31

What went wrong??

Talentless 'Executive Producers' with a death grip on editorial control is my guess ☕

I agree Henry would backtrack in an instant but Rachel's gripping his balls all the cards which is pretty much how I thought it would pan out in 2018.

He's been outed as a palace PR sham.

He deserves to live in interesting times.

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2024 21:13

I haven't watched it (Polo) but seen the reviews.
If I were to guess ( and only a guess ) H&M had to put out another Netflix thing to fulfil their obligations , & may be they have done that but really nothing else apart from their personal story got much viewing ( Am I right on that ? ) So it would not surprise me to hear Netflix have dropped them ( unless they need to do another one for the contract. )

I think they overestimated their interest / talent once away from the BRF

The series show runner, Milos Balac is in People magazine saying the series was Meghan's idea due to her love of "tailgating" (assume that's some polo thing) and desire to bring Polo to the masses; and that they were extremely hands on with the production, including having a hand in providing notes for the editing process.

Tailgating in the USA is basically a party you have a car park around a big game usually American football. Trucks have tailgates which they drop and you have a bit of a BBQ. I just can't see Meghan being into something like that and I don't see it being particularly associated with Polo. She really does have some weird ideas about 'community'.

Tailgating in the UK is when someone drives right up your arse.

Ellmau · 11/12/2024 21:33

I’m completely amazed Harry and Meghan wanted to be so publicly associated with it.

TBF Harry has zero self awareness and I'm not sure Meghan has much.

Harry has played polo himself for years so assumes, incorrectly, other people would be interested too.

Mylovelygreendress · 11/12/2024 08:15

Excuse my lack of knowledge but what does Executive Produced mean ? As opposed to Executive Producers .

I winced when I saw that.

'Executive Produced by Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex'.

For a start, who even says 'Executive Produced by ...'? Surely it's simply 'Executive Producers + name(s)'? Or, pushing it a bit, but still at least on the right side of being grammatically correct, 'Executively Produced by ...'? But that's sooooo wanky. All of it is. Including using the titles in the US for a US Netflix production. Wanky and tedious.

And even more people don't have that level.of disposable income!

My issue is not with the poster's financial choices, it is with their description of that being a 'shoestring'.

I grew up in a rural area, so was able to ride quite a lot, quite cheaply. Lots of friends had a pony or two, because grazing was cheap. They had native pony types (not pure bred) and hardy cobs, that lived out all year with a rug in winter, and some hay and a handful of hard feed.

That is very different from 10 polo ponies, not only in the number of horses, but also needing far more shelter and feeding than tough little native ponies. I don't know anyone from my childhood who would have been able to afford 10 ponies/horses.

Not to mention vets' bills for animals who will have all sorts of issues because of the way they have been treated.

I hope this stupid series generates a discussion about banning polo on horses or any other animal.

Thank you, JADS, I was aware of the vehicular definition, but not the party thing, which sounds a bit infra dig for the duchess of pretension.

Funnily enough, the Vintage Read was saying that MM is claiming (through one of her tedious tabloid planted leaks) that she feels she doesn't fit in with the polo crowd. And is saying she didn't think the polo series was a good idea. Where have we heard that before? Oh yes, she said she didn't fit in with the RF, and thought the "tell all" Netflix series was a bad idea too.

Everyone involved in this pile of steaming pony bobbins is throwing the others under the bus and claiming the other was in complete control of the product. It's pathetic.

Something very similar happens in the UK at polo and point to points and so on. I've certainly seen the royal family doing it. It's just not called tailgating.

One of the main problems with H& M is that they don't seem to have any sense of humour at all.

Sunblessed · 11/12/2024 23:11

Not sure if it’s legit or not, but seemingly a Reddit user submitted a FOIA to the NYPD and a letter (Dec2023) from Harry’s security to the NYPD, is trying to use Harry’s ‘status’ and his relationship with Californian Gov Gavin Newsom, to ask why the paps haven’t been arrested re the NY ‘car chase’ from May 2023, amongst other demands. Harry also suspects a cover up!

Just dripping in the usual entitlement and paranoia

We’ll see if this hit the papers or not but it could be the continuation of a very bad week for old Haz.

I agree. When they're hamming it up 'for lulz' so to speak, it's always at the expense of someone else, eg encouraging an audience to laugh at Harry's supposed 12-house-moves/12-divorces detractors, and Meghan playing to the cameras to take the piss out of Queen Elizabeth II, but there's never anything genuinely self-deprecating or quirky or witty from them. Just mildly unpleasant rancour & self-aggrandisement, and tedium.

EverybodyLovesString · 12/12/2024 00:16

To make an interesting show out of such an elite world would have need a bit of ironic detachment and a willingness to recognise how absurd and privileged it all is. Harry and Meghan aren't capable of doing that, they take themselves far too seriously.

Mincepiesorpigsinblankets · 12/12/2024 08:24

I follow Polo player Charlie Hanbury's wife Yoanna Hanbury on Instagram , their lifestyle is incredible

AzurePanda · 12/12/2024 08:31

@Baital, polo ponies are rarely stabled (unless in a very fancy polo yard) and happily live out all year round. We make our own hay so no extra cost there and a handful of nuts every day each is really not expensive.

People make different choices, we’ve never bought a new car and have a caravan for holidays.

It’s been so lovely to give so many polo ponies happy homes over the years - still have 3 left and one is 31!

and of course if it had been a ratings hit H and M would've been claiming all the applause then.

Absolutely this. Everything they say or do has to “shine a light” on something, but only when it’s advantageous to them. They are far too worthy and earnest and take themselves far too seriously. Any ideas for content just end up being dull as a result. “Pearl”, for instance sounded about as much fun as watching paint dry. I’m not surprised it bit the dust.

They both seem to think that just being who they are is enough to guarantee them
success and just can’t fathom that, although there are a few lucky people who hit the jackpot and get success straight away, the vast majority of success is down to hard work and takes time. Neither of which they seem to want to invest. Sending themselves up a bit might actually be one way to get some success but I can’t see them ever being able to do that

Uricon2 · 12/12/2024 11:09

Well, it was pretty much considered a terrible idea on here when it was announced and it sounds like it is equally badly executed (I've only seen the trailer, read some reviews)

I honestly don't see how H&M feel they will have any remaining shreds of credibility to offer to their "philanthropic" and social justice focused "light shining" while giving their names to this.

But didn’t someone involved with the series say that H and M were very involved and M in particular was a driving force ?

thenightsky · 12/12/2024 12:30

I've made it to episode 3. Its still dull. They'd have been much better concentrating on the horses lives because they are beautiful and I could watch them for hours. The humans are dull as ditchwater.
