He looks rather distinguished with the beard , which appears to be remaining in place.
Was nice to see his Spencer cousins supporting him - I loved all of their dresses, and Beatrice as well.
A worthwhile cause supporting young people moving on and up out of homelessness.

I certainly don't think they are a dysfunctional family.
The Mummy comment was funny she's Her Magesty and who over the age of 5 still calls their Mother Mummy, it's such a baby word.

Maybe using their titles is partly a way of respecting each other and trying to keep the professional life seperate from their private life.

I remember watching a documentary on Prince Philip (probably when it was wall to wall Royal stuff just after he passsd away) they were talking about him being reunited with a young Charles & Ann after being away on a Royal tour. They met on the deck of Britannia, for the camera it was stiff upper lip formal handshakes, but once inside out of view it was big cuddles and them jumping all over him!

JSMill · 31/10/2024 00:40

@Needanewname42 I think you are right - using titles in public is a way of keeping boundaries between their private and public lives. It doesn't mean they are cold.

If your own mother raised an eyebrow for you calling them mummy then it shows what a dysfunctional family they are. None of their actions are of a normal loving family.

You really don't get it do you?

Oh dear...where to even start trying to explain the role of the RF.

And Meghan's family are just like the Waltons, aren't they?

namechange1975 · 31/10/2024 06:29

We are all entitled to our opinions @theemptinessmachine and if they aren't the same as yours doesn't mean "I don't get it".

It's not up to you to explain the role of the RF @CoffeeCantata. You seem to get defensive every time posters aren't praising the RF you seem to take it as personal criticism as if defending your own family.

The RF are only relevant as long as the public support them and we are all entitled to our views on how they carry out their roles.

CoffeeCantata · 31/10/2024 06:45

Or possibly when posters show a total lack of understanding of the British constitution?

I don't like to see spiteful, bullying, hypocritical people getting away with their behaviour. I find Meghan and Harry's behaviour beyond awful - and it would be bad enough if they didn't try to pose as do-gooders.

But I think their star is falling and everyone except their die-hard fans are seeing them for what they are now.

namechange1975 · 31/10/2024 06:55

Why do you always have to bring H&M into every conversation @CoffeeCantata not everything is about them. You seem to be obsessed with them even though you clearly have a lot of hate towards them. Every time you post you always seem to bring it back to them.

Of course we are all entitled to our views and of course the RF are only relevant as long as the public want them. I think they are well aware of that. However, you said the fact that the Queen raised and eyebrow at being called “mummy” showed that the family are dysfunctional. Posters have since pointed out why this is not the case. That has nothing to do with whether there should be a monarchy or not 🤷‍♀️

namechange1975 · 31/10/2024 07:40

I made the point they were "dysfunctional" @smilesy but I never debated whether there should be a RF or not. I was just making comment about what they called each other in terms of names or titles it wasn't a criticism just an observation. It seems as if the long term posters on here act as if they have monopoly on the RF board and no one else is allowed to join in and if they do they are jumped on if it isn't something they agree on 🤷‍♀️

That. Is the nature of discussion though. Often there are people who have a similar opinion who disagree with one or more people who don’t share this. I personally disagree with your sweeping generalisation that the way the RF address each other makes them dysfunctional. And you did mention the fact that they were only relevant as long as the public support them which is what I was alluding to

Well - I've tried to explain it as simply as I can. Don't know how else to put it across really - just read my post, I guess!

Thedom · 31/10/2024 09:40

Well, if you go back to the start of the thread, 3 posts in, a Harry fan is the one who repeatedly brought Harry and Meghan into the conversation, the conversation then derailed from Williams beard to H&M.

Quite - and this is true of its relationship with the Commonwealth - and particularly Australia. The late Queen said more than once that she was happy to serve as HoS - just as long as they wanted her, and when they don't - that's fine, and no hard feelings - we'll remain good friends. All the anti-monarchy protesters are hitting the wrong target - they need to lobby for a referendum within their own countries. The Queen/King can't make that decision!

As for the 'mummy' remark from Charles - I think I'd have something to say to my son if he referred to me like that in a formal speech (he'd rather die...). Charles was letting personal matters intrude into his formal role (a bit - I think his mother had just died, so perhaps we can cut him a bit of slack?? I can't remember the occasion) and that's uncomfortable for everyone.

Love William with his beard 😊

I don't hate it (like some on here!). My only objection is that I think one of William's best features is his strong bone structure and the beard hides it a bit. Also he has quite a long face and the beard might elongate it too.

But I'm not knocking William - he's a handsome chap.

I was a bit of a joke, I don't think she knew it was coming.

Makes me curious as to what they really called her behind closed doors, Mum, Mam, Ma? Who knows.

I think she was Granny to the Grandkids. I remember Bea showing off an amazing Wendy House, in the grounds of one of the castles that had belonged to Granny when she was a child.

upinaballoon · 31/10/2024 20:06

Queen Mary's dolls' house at Windsor? Is that what it's called?

Charles called his mother 'mummy' once when they were outside the palace, at one of the jubilees, the golden or diamond one. I think he started that speech with, "Your Majesty, Mummy................................................."

No this, needed to Google it, wendy house, miniature house, apparently it's in the grounds of Royal Lodge.
Which makes a lot of sense that Beatrice was the one to show it off on TV. And she spoke about it being Grannies. It is beautiful. But child sized Beatrice and the presenter couldn't stand up in it.

Edit reading the article the program was broadcast in 2012 - how does my brain 🧠 remember stuff like that ?

The one thing you referred to - it's a sign of a dysfunctional family? 😂 Give me a break 😂

Harry and Meghan used the little house in their Netflix show .
I am surprised there were allowed ( if indeed they asked!)

It's fairly normal to use formal names in formal situations, surely? Just as the US President is always 'Mr President ' in a formal situation.

At two jubilees, I believe. It was well received and the Queen looks fine with it, if a little surprised.
