That's not strictly true, he is going to inherit millions from the late Queen Mother when he reaches 40.

Is he though?

This rumour has been going around for ages but I have my doubts. He was only a great grandchild, one of several. Why would he in particular have come in for all these 'millions'?

TheStroppyFeminist · 02/09/2024 14:37

Interesting comparison to the Beckhams. The thing about them is that they knew it could all go wrong and that part of their success depended on being liked by their fans and the public.

Beckham knew how the public (well, football fans anyway) turned on him after that kick in 1996 or whenever it was (97 maybe?) - there were effigies of him hung in the streets, which was horrible. And I don't think either of them has or would publicly trash their families for financial gain. It's very unBritish!

The Beckhams used to live near me and I have friends whose dc were at school with their dcs. Nothing but praise. Well brought up dcs. Apparently Victoria has a great sense of humour!

Victoria and David were once in our local Marks and Sparks signing autographs on their way into the food department! They stood for an hour staff told me and were all smiles.

Exactly. I said this rumour wasn't convincing. If you look it up, there are plenty of articles about it but they all tend to use an interesting word 'reportedly'. The Palace of course has never confirmed anything specific. It seems to have been acknowledged that the QM set up a trust fund for her great grandchildren, but the bit about Harry getting the lion's share and why is pure speculation.

BunnyLake · 02/09/2024 15:18

Yes. They could have made a fortune by being royal adjacent. They didn't have to be working royals visiting youth centres in Stoke on Trent. They'd still be able to attend the big events like Trooping or Christmas at Sandringham. Much better for merching opportunities anyway.

Look at Zara and Mike and how they work their royal connections. True, they both have genuine sporting achievements but the fact that she was the Queen's granddaughter has done wonders for their profile and earning power. And while the Tindalls are barely known outside of Britain, as the son of the King and the sainted Diana, with an American actress wife, Harry and Meghan could have become an international 'brand'. All this, while keeping decent relations with family and still getting to participate in some aspects of royal life.

They really could have had the best of both worlds. But their hubris and arrogance blinded them to that.

Edited

Totally they could have. They really are a couple of numpties.

Yes, I think it's one of those rumours that has taken on a life of its own over the years.

She may well have left some money for her great grandchildren but there can't have been all that much once it got distributed among them all. I'm not sure how many were born during her lifetime but it must have been around 10. I can't see why she'd have singled out Harry for special generosity since as the future King's son he would always be very well looked after.

In any case, given their lifestyle, a few million aren't going to go too far.

Brilliant 👏
My compliments.

Bless you Smile. I just heard Sir Rod on the radio belting out his classic 🎶. I didn't even have to change many of the words in my head, and I dedicate it to you.

Wake up, Meggie, I think I got somethin' to say to you
September's here and I'm really tired of stupid tours
I know I keep you amused, but I feel I'm being used
Oh, Meggie, I couldn't have tried any more

You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that's what really hurts

The mornin' sun when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none, in my eyes, you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes, my love, you didn't need to coax
Oh, Meggie, I couldn't have tried any more

You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul, and that's a pain I can do without

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover, and mother, what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed, and in the morning, kick me in the head
Oh, Meggie, I couldn't have tried any more

You led me away from home
'Cause you didn't wanna be alone
You stole my heart, I couldn't leave you if I tried

I suppose I could collect my things and get on back to friends
Or ring my daddy's phone and beg a little to make amends
Or find myself a charity brand that needs a helpin' hand
Oh, Meggie, I wished I'd never seen your face

You made a first-class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart, but I love you anyway

Meggie, I wished I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home one of these days
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Bloody. Brilliant.

The only best dedication I've ever had FlowersFlowersFlowers

(You'd have had more bouquets thrown at your feet, except I found I had to keep going back and selecting each one.
How do people do those mad strings of "I'm crying so hard with laughter because I find people disagreeing with me and pointing out where I'm wrong absolutely hilarious!!!" emojis? I can't - quite - believe they've the utter dedication to go back and forth umpteen times)

Will have that tune in my head all evening now!

I suspect that Megahn deliberately presented herself as a vulnerable but brave Orphan Annie, alone in the world but bravely making her own way (cue: trembling lip; left eye, one tear - GO!) to tug on Harry;s heartstrings in the early days of their relationship.

Which is why Harry was never allowed to meet Thomas Markle or Uncle Mike and why Thomas couldn't be allowed to attend the wedding. He wouldn't have followed the script.

I've heard this too, from someone who knows them well. It surprised me since Victoria often appears inscrutably straight-faced in public. The friend told me that she was deeply affected by the awful hate campaign against them after David missed the penalty - I think there were placards at one match when she was pregnant wishing the baby would die. So she tries to give the public nothing to latch on to by appearing very boring - and in the circs, I don't blame her!

Abouttimeforanamechange · 02/09/2024 16:21

Copy and paste after the first couple. I got fed up selecting laughing emojis just now, so I tried it and it works - at least, it does on the device I'm currently using. .

CoffeeCantata · 02/09/2024 16:23

And another reason why I don't think he could be a working royal is that he's been so open about hating it.

Yes, the dimwit! Once said, you can't take that back very plausibly. We all know that some royal engagements must be less than thrilling but that's the whole point - it's not about how exciting it is for them, it's about shining light on the people who've made something happen, or who've worked hard to help others. But (as Queen Mary once said 'We are the British royal family; we like visiting hospitals and we are never tired!') it would be unthinkable for a royal to come out and say that. You can find a task boring in the moment but still believe in its value in the big picture (I was a teacher...😂)

He doesn't get it and he's really cooked his goose.

lillypopdaisyduke · 02/09/2024 16:26

He's pooing his pants incase Charles pops it and Wills is in charge - no way back for the deceitful duo then. The gravy train will stop running.

CarmelaBrunella · 02/09/2024 16:26

I think he wants to make sure that Charles has set up Trust Funds for Archie and Lilibet.

Which is why Harry was never allowed to meet Thomas Markle or Uncle Mike and why Thomas couldn't be allowed to attend the wedding. He wouldn't have followed the script.

And why Doria was kept well under control at the wedding, according to Tom Bower. When I watched the wedding (in those days when I thought Meghan would be a fabulous addition to the RF!!!) I felt so sorry for her, sitting all alone and shedding a tear.

Apparently, as well as urging M to invite her father and other relations, the RF had wanted to seat Doria with them, but M wasn't having it. She insisted on her sitting in splendid isolation. So not only did she keep Doria away from the RF as much as possible, but also managed to make it look as though the RF had shunned and snubbed her when nothing was further from the truth (this is how her supporters later interpreted it, and who knows how calculated it was??).

CarmelaBrunella · 02/09/2024 16:30

The late Queen invited Doria to stay at Sandringham over Christmas, and Charles and Camilla invited her to Clarence House. These invitations were turned down.

CoffeeCantata · 02/09/2024 16:31

Emmanuelll · 02/09/2024 14:00

If some awful tragedy put him in to the direct line of succession, then we would just have to get used to the idea and hope that steps were taken to prepare him to be able to acquit himself well in the role (for indeed we would have no choice).

Or, we could just stop with the whole ridiculous facade and not have a King any more because it's outdated, nonsensical and archaic.

Ooh no, thanks. Boring!

I'm happy with a nice, gentle, reassuring constitutional monarchy (as are many of Europe's most liberal and democratic countries).

In the context of what's going on in the world just now, and in the country, I'd say the monarchy is the absolute least of our problems.

Yes, and according to TB, so were at least two invitations from the Middletons for her to stay with them. You can just imagine Meghan ordering her mum to decline these invites!

Double points for Meghan: not only do you keep her away from people to whom she might say 'too much', but you also get to look like the victims of racism or snobbery. Win-win!

Uricon2 · 02/09/2024 16:35

@AutumnCrow Brava! 😂

Re the QM's money. I think he's due more than William (that's what's always been said) and can imagine the lion's share going to them rather than other gt grandchildren (I'm not a massive QM fan, TBH) but I doubt it will be a huge amount even if well invested. Well, it would probably be a huge amount to most of us, but we don't have 16 bathrooms and a 24/7 security detail.

JSMill · 02/09/2024 16:35

Has anyone seen the video of H with his arm around the chair of the attractive Columbian interpreter for a prolonged period of time? He was really invading her personal space and had his body turned towards her and away from his wife. I personally would have felt very uncomfortable if I was that woman and I would not have been happy if my dh behaved like that (not that he would). It was very strange and wonder if it was a f@&k you to M. She was just sitting with her usual rictus grin. I personally think there's trouble in paradise.

It was spite though wasn’t it. The queen said no to half in half out , Charles and William part of that, so they did their interviews and book, fed into scobies , all out of spite. Thinking they were bigger than the establishment. That the royals would live to regret it and they’d show them who was the real boss. Sticking it to them in return for the no.

and the royals played a blinder by ignoring them. The queen played a blinder with her infamous “recollections may vary” . And their little house of cards came tumbling down with every petty revelation, whinge, untruth and indiscretion Harry and Megan issued.

harry and Megan always needed the royals. The royals never needed them. Harry and Megan just didn’t know it.

And someone should point out to Harry and Megan as they try to crawl back. What the meaning of spare actually is. Surplus to requirements,..
