UK Royals at the Olympics

I've been following some Spanish social media outlets to keep up to date on some of their athletes and have been really impressed with the Spanish royals (kids included) showing up to a wide variety of events, cheering from the stands in their Espana shirts, hosting a reception for the athletes and basically being ambassadors for Spanish sports.

In terms of our royals, I've only seen Anne giving out medals for a few events. Are they normally more involved? Is it because of Kate's illness/being short-staffed?

Considering how well team GB is doing, it seems a shame to not be out there cheering them on, giving airspace to British athletes/sport.

(This isn't a sly dig on royals not doing enough, I couldn't care less what they do usually, but this seems like a wasted opportunity).

William doesn’t work in school holidays- even before Kate was unwell. (And he could have got the train, no need to fly)

I think we need to get used to less royals at stuff- there’s only William and Kate as working royals the next generation down from the monarch- and even before illness, neither did many engagements.

For senior Royals, it’s only going to be special occasions we see them.

Willy barely works and is cutting down what ever it is he does do having only stepped up to the 'full-time' plate some five or six years ago.

If we're expected to get used to seeing less royalling it seems only fair the 50% increase in the never to be reduced SG gets the once, twice, thrice look over on his cut too.

He could even reconsider releasing his tax figures like Pa and Gan-gan did...

@sausawyee Sometimes. I think it's funny. How many posts from "When is Buckingham
palace open to visitors?" to "Well, if M&H were in charge, it would be floodlit 24/7 with karaoke on the roof"

So true.

I am just glad I am not a royal...I don't like sport and it would be an ordeal for me to pretend that I do.

No. It must be some other stench about your person. Check your drains.

I didn’t realise King Felipe and his older sister both competed in sailing at the Olympics. That's interesting. He seems to have a connection with the Netherlands heir to the throne so has been popping up there.

I liked seeing Princess Anne in her role with the IOC and Sophie is there supporting the hockey and cycling. It's the Paris games so maybe the RF are feeling a bit scared after the Marie Antionette stuff in the opening ceremony! Their wide spread attendance at the London Games made a lot more sense.

I remain baffled at the high opinion of Princess Anne on here. We were at the rowing on Friday, and knew via our friends’ young adult children two of the volunteers involved in the medals presentations, both of whom spontaneously said how rude she was compared to the other people presenting medals.

@sausawyee You're late-someone else got there in 13!

The truth deserves to be repeated.

I think they might turn up if they have sports patronages

Most sporty patronages are held by the Waleses, who aren't there for obvious reasons.

Duke of Edinburgh (if the list I was looking at is up to date) has both cycling and sailing, so mildly surprised he's not there, but good to see the Duchess instead.

She's also involved with the Paralympics and the Commonwealth Games.
