She did say "naff off" to a photographer.

No she didn't!

What she really said could not be reported by the MSM at the time for fear of shocking middle England. Even the usual euphemism Eff Off was considered too much! That's why the press made something up instead

(Eventing friend of the same era, who knew her well enough to talk horse to her on many occasions).

CurlewKate · 26/06/2024 11:26

I'd give good money to know what was in that cool bag!

Duchy jam?

Jilly Cooper books?

Pictures of dogs for the bedside?

Tupperware container of favourite cereal?

Uricon2 · 26/06/2024 12:04

I think there were some attempts by the Press around the time of her first wedding to make Anne fit the "fairytale princess" image. Fortunately, she always seemed much more interested in her horseworld achievements and actually doing a lot of meaningful work for her charities/the RF and had a marked reluctance to slot in to this "mould". Shortly after, along came Diana and Fergie and Anne was sidelined. I very much doubt she minded, at all.

It's taken a long time but I think she's thoroughly earned the respect she now commands by plugging away at the important stuff. It's nice to see that someone just being themself can finally win through.

I wonder if she has been sent any ARO jam 🤔

Some very chilled home made lemonade. Her favourite tea bags. A selection of tiny sandwiches on different sorts of bread. Perfectly ripe peaches. Home made shortbread with flaked almonds.

AliceOlive · 26/06/2024 12:41

Unlike the middle classes who are sometimes unsure how to behave for example with waiters or domestic staff.

Random off sides but this is not at all my experience. Manners are free and people of all walks of life teach them to their children. Do you feel uncomfortable with waiters?

CurlewKate · 26/06/2024 13:36

@JawJaw "The upper classes have been brought up to be charming to everyone including their servants who they depend on. Unlike the middle classes who are sometimes unsure how to behave for example with waiters or domestic staff."

Are you Pamela or Debo?

JawJaw · 26/06/2024 13:49

MN is weird about class, it’s something that can’t be mentioned on here without people thinking you are a Hyacinth Bucket throwback. Whether you like it or the class system is alive and kicking in the U.K. from a left wing perspective it’s really important to not deny this.

ajandjjmum · 26/06/2024 13:49

True, but then third and fourth until William came along. Definitely not someone on the fringes of the RF at any point.

I suspect she would have been more than happy to have been excluded from the line of succession, but has a strong sense of duty. Interesting though that she ensured her own DC weren't dragged into it!

No one denies the concept of class still exists. Most particularly not in UK where it’s alive and well and very out in the open.

It’s you acting as if people don’t know how to behave based on class and me challenging the attitude. It’s very haughty and demeaning.

I am not convinced you know what “left wing” means, either. Or I hope not, if you think the left wing is the arbiter of fairness and logic.

Ah. Indiscriminate bolding.

Whatever Hyacinth Bucket had, it wasn't class. That was the whole point of the comedy.

No, neither class nor manners really!

I think we can describe it as putting on airs. 🤣

How on earth do you know that about her? And, anyway it wouldn’t be surprising if she didn’t make a fuss about things. People dance around her making sure her life is easy and she has everything she needs.

I have no problem at all with Princess Anne. I imagine, like most members of the royal family, she is very good at putting people at ease and would be quite pleasant to talk to. The upper classes have been brought up to be charming to everyone including their servants who they depend on. Unlike the middle classes who are sometimes unsure how to behave for example with waiters or domestic staff. I don’t think any of us can really know what any member of the royal family are really like.

What I have noticed is the construction of a very consistent discourse about Princess Anne in recent years with similar tropes again and again:
down to earth
no nonsense
a trooper
just gets on with it
good egg. Etc etc

I am not saying she is not like that I am just pointing out how an image of her is being constructed. She used to be a fairly peripheral figure in British life and is now coming to the foreground, possibly because the RFs ranks have become depleted. From being a dull and grumpy figure in the background she is all of a sudden ‘bloody marvellous’ .

She hasn't written a book, gone on tv or given magazine interviews moaning about her life.
No: poor me! I've always been the spare!
There was an attempt to kidnap her at gunpoint on The Mall. When the armed kidnapper told her to get into the car, she said "not bloody likely!".
She recounted the ordeal on Parkinson with no hint of self pity, anguish or complaint.
Just wry humour.
She has never publicly complained about her first husband nor events surrounding that divorce.
Yes.
I can work out what kind of character she is, not someone so self centered and pathetic that she'd take it out on nursing staff.

DelectableMe · 26/06/2024 16:07

Also, @JawJaw , Anne is a successful Three Day Eventer and a silver medal winning Olympian. An accomplished equestrian.
That's speaks to me of hard work, effort and determination. Not what Mummy or Daddy could buy.
So yes, I would challenge the unpleasant narrative spun upthread.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/06/2024 10:15

Years ago she used to be talked of as grumpy and dull. Again, I have no idea if this is a true representation either

But you're just putting it out there, like.

What's that favourite word of MN? ah yes. Disingenuous.

I don't recall Anne being considered "grumpy" or "dull". Outspoken, maybe.

Runnerinthenight · 26/06/2024 16:22

CurlewKate · 26/06/2024 10:54

"She was second in line to the throne at one point - hardly on the periphery!"

Only until Andrew was born, surely? That must have been enough to make a saint a bit grumpy!

I'd actually think she was quite pleased!

DelectableMe · 26/06/2024 16:25

Well, who knows. She was second in line to the throne on her mother's accession. She is now 17th. She has never complained publicly about this.

ARichtGoodDram · 26/06/2024 16:31

I think at 9 1/2 be a bit miffed that your new brother bumped you down the line.

Though by 14 with Edward she might have been quite pleased.

I think in some ways she has the best gig. As the Queen’s only daughter she got a good title when she was given the Princess Royal title. You get a good pick of charities and patronages. You get good access to the royal jewellery box. But being that bit further down you can live at Gatcombe and bring up your children in a luxurious lifestyle without the same restrictions as your elder brother, less scrutiny than any of the royal wives really and your children have much less pressure than your nephew (and much less stick than your nieces).

I think if you have to be royal then Anne’s spot is a good one.

DelectableMe · 26/06/2024 16:36

I agree with you, @ARichtGoodDram , and she's definitely carved out a positive role and has certainly been a good support act to her brother this past couple of years.

ARichtGoodDram · 26/06/2024 16:42

I do wonder if a bit of William’s media silence about a lot comes from watching her.

She has had her scandals - the stolen letters and dog issues in particular - over the years, but because she’s kept her head down, been seen doing a lot of engagements and hasn’t complained or whinged about any of it she’s ridden them all out and they’ve faded into the past. Whereas if she was controversial, or even just annoyed the media by not playing the game in the expected way, they’d come up in articles all the time as they’d use them as a stick to poke her with.

If I was a royal parent she’s definitely the one I’d be pointing to as an example on how to deal with the scrutiny!

wordler · 26/06/2024 17:13

She talked on camera once about how she was made to feel she was definitely not the favored heir by the nanny that she and Charles had when they were little. She said it wryly but not in a whining way so I think she got used to the pecking order fairly early on.

DelectableMe · 26/06/2024 17:19

Yes, she said Senior Nanny always favoured Charles, but she did laugh about it.
