Camilla snubs Brigitte Macron at D-Day Anniversary, rejecting her gesture of warmth

Well, isn't this a funny one.

Foreign heads of state are under no obligation to respect protocols of foreign royalty, particularly in their own country.

Seems Camilla didn't get the memo:

"Queen Camilla, 76, and Brigitte, 71, had an awkward moment on June 6 during a service marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France. As seen in a video shared to X by the Daily Mail, French President Emmanuel Macron's wife tried to hold the royal's hand after they laid wreaths at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer. However, Queen Camilla didn't reciprocate, keeping her arm at her side. After briefly grasping the royal's hand, Brigitte stepped to the side and folded her arms in front of her.
Proper etiquette around interacting with the British royals has long been a highly discussed subject. The royal family's website, which has yet to be updated in full following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, states, "There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms."

Funnily enough, Charles himself didn't follow royal protocol:

"Proving that there are no hard and fast rules around how to say hello, King Charles, 75, greeted President Macron with a hug at the British Normandy Memorial and kissed his wife's hand."

I guess Camilla's more royal than the royals themselves?

Yes I get that but I still don’t see what GB news has to do with it 🤷‍♀️

It was an excuse to return to the scene of the crime and itch my scratch. Probably misguidely but I'm curious nevertheless. Besides which the link is on topic unlike the pigeons. Which are marvellous birds btw - both the male and female take turns to feed their chick with regurgitated food and mate for life.

LaMarschallin · 08/06/2024 21:03

I'm glad we've had it explained that "ey up" means someone is from the north.
A bona fide Brit, obviously, look you, bach, we'll keep a welcome in the hillsides, tidy like (we're very trusting in Wales).

Tbh I'm with Camilla. If someone I didn't know and was merely a work contact, tried to hold my hand I wouldn't entertain it.

Trying to hold the hand of an acquaintance is quite odd

Camilla should know Brigette. Charles knows the Macron’s well(ish) so I’d be surprised if Camilla didn’t know her better than she gave the appearance of.

Gorgonemilezola · 08/06/2024 21:15

Actually I think Camilla and Brigitte have probably been on the blower to each other chortling at the frothing in both directions. I'm guessing they're both sensible enough to recognise it was a moment of surprise for Camilla and perhaps a lapse of concentration for Brigitte. And a pretty trivial moment in an emotional day blown out of proportion all round.

They are mating for life all over my lawn, but coo at me prettily when I come out to replenish the feeders every morning, and gather around me. I feel like the lady from Mary Poppins who fed the birds. It costs considerably more than tuppence a bag though - birds care is expensive! They also think my cats are wankers, which is a fair assessment.

GB News are also reporting this week that Harry is illegally working and getting involved in US politics under a head of state visa. I'm glad the Sussex supporters think it is a credible news source. How will their hero negotiate that blunder, I wonder? Maybe one of you should go on and defend him.

Who had over 300 minutes in the departure sweepie?

I don't appreciate people clutching my hand because I have a painful condition of my joints with some bone damage, and unexpected contact such as a hand grip can hurt, so I have a tendency to recoil automatically.

For all I know Camilla may have something similar. I know she raises awareness of osteoporosis, the disease that so badly affected her own mother.

All women need to be very careful of their bone health, especially past their forties and beyond.

Did Harry post in memory of D Day ? I didn't see anything in the news?

Mylovelygreendress · 09/06/2024 09:22

I didn’t see anything @AnnieSF . Given his time in the Forces and his ongoing support of veterans. I would have expected The Office Of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (!) to issue a statement!

Serenster · 09/06/2024 09:27

He was too busy giving an exclusive comment to People magazine that he had sent "his love and support and admiration for the couple" to the Duke and Duchess of Westminster for their wedding day. (That’s a genuine quote, by the way).

It wouldn't surprise me if both Harry and Meghan would need to go on Wikipedia to find out what D-Day actually was. I know Harry served in the army, but nothing about him gives the impression he's interested in history.

They strike me as people who live entirely in the present moment, with little sense of history, culture or serious political matters.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 09:32

@CoffeeCantata - I think that your final paragraph is a good summary.
It also explains the general lack of awareness, empathy and consideration for others.

AnnieSF · 09/06/2024 09:34

It's a very strange omission considering the involvement of troops from his " new home". He could easily have nipped down to Fort Rosencranz. It is a thought provoking place.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 09:58

I sometimes wonder what he actually does all day.

Recent experience with a young person reminded me of how some people are only quick to act when it benefits them. If it doesn't then they can't be bothered. H and M retain that feature now.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 10:27

I think most people grow out of that, @AnnieSF . Particularly those over 40 with children of their own.

BemusedAmerican · 09/06/2024 10:37

@Serenster Do posh Brits not just send cards and possibly make a large charitable donation as a present rather than a press release? Let's hope poor Hugh and Olivia weren't send jam.

JADS · 09/06/2024 10:46

@BemusedAmerican Most Brits would said a sorry "we can't be there" card and a small present. We wouldn't put an ad in the local paper giving our best wishes!

The leaking by Harry and Meghan is absolutely next level. Given how much they complained the palace did the same thing, it does their PR image no good.

Typo

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 09/06/2024 11:18

I still just can’t take the idea of Camilla P-B being ‘The Queen’ seriously at all!
**
It just seems so ridiculous.

TheCultureHusks, I know. I find it hard to take seriously also.

It would have been kinder if Charles and Camilla had married much earlier and Diana therefore not drawn into their shite. Someone forgot to tell the 19 year old girl, brought up on stories of romance that all ended happily ever with the wedding ceremony, the score.

I’m also old enough to remember Lady Dale Tyrone being gossiped about as the other main mistress.

Charles — who gave the socialite the nickname “Kanga” due to her Australian roots — once called her “the only woman who ever really understood me.”* *NY Post, May 12 2023

Camilla waited out the first wife and other main woman and now has the crown on her head.

The moment between Camilla and Brigette was awkward. Quite a number of media outlets called it that. I watched a video that clearly showed Camilla and Brigitte’s faces and the brief attempt at hand grasping. Both women acted awkwardly.

Brigitte won in the white suit fashion stakes though. Her whole look was spot on. Her only visible adornment were her large plain buttons on her suit - and they looked just right.

I think the women were dressed in white as a less somber (but still very respectful) alternative to black. It befitted the day.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 11:23

What's done is done. I'm sure there are regrets. We'd all like to turn the clock back and perhaps change some of our decisions and actions.
Camilla should now be judged on her actions and how she fulfills her role now.
This was something very minor, made into something major as an attack on the woman herself.
Diana is dead. Meghan and Harry have left.
It's pointless, and very unpleasant just to try to find ways to pick on Camilla with no evidence whatsoever.

AnnieSF · 09/06/2024 11:39

Again someone making it about a style competition. Yes that was the whole point of the day 🙄 . Not everyone thinks a serious event like this is all about the "style".
