The King has a new portrait

Maybe it’s because I know nothing about art but my initials thoughts are…”Huh”

From the artist:
"It was a privilege and pleasure to have been commissioned by The Drapers' Company to paint this portrait of His Majesty The King, the first to be unveiled since his Coronation. When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed. I do my best to capture the life experiences and humanity etched into any individual sitter's face, and I hope that is what I have achieved in this portrait. To try and capture that for His Majesty The King, who occupies such a unique role, was both a tremendous professional challenge, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed and am immensely grateful for."

Though nothing for me will ever come close to Freud's QEII, which is so brilliant, six o'clock shadow, expression of stoical boredom and all.

I really love Lucian Freud's work.

This new one is ok but doesn't do a great deal for me.

yarnwitch · 14/05/2024 18:37

The face is good. I don't get the colour, it looks like he's walking out of an inferno.

SabreIsMyFave · 14/05/2024 18:38

It's utterly minging IMO.

Where's his sausage fingers?

It was his hand that I noticed first.
I like the face but not the hands.

Don't know why they rejected mine.

Brilliant!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 14/05/2024 18:51

Someone had a job lot of rose madder paint pots to use up, perhaps ...

... though, it's actually rather striking - at least it's not as insipid as some royal paintings.

GardenGnomeDefender · 14/05/2024 18:56

Don't like the foreground and background being virtually identical.

With the lack of discrimination of the subject from the background I find about 80% of the painting pointless and distracting and would crop it down to the bit that actually got painted of him - his face. Or at least just the head and shoulders.

The coat and background are pointless and annoying.

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2024 19:00

His face is amazing though, it's almost like a photograph than a painting.
He isn't the most handsome of people , but this does him justice I think.

His fantasy was to be Camilla's tampon.....

No it wasn’t

He looks like he's being burned at the stake

That tickled me, I do like it though, it’s very dramatic and must look amazing in real life.

The petulant king as Camilla’s used tampax

Are people who refer (and refer incorrectly) to a private conversation that was illegally obtained and then published without the consent of the speakers, not embarrassed of themselves? It’s grotesque that a private conversation was ever tapped let alone leaked, why would you be so happy to refer to it (and not even in a funny way)?

Nigellasstickytoffeepudding · 14/05/2024 19:10

I really like that

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2024 19:15

It's on the news now. Looks amazing!

In fairness, from a distance, the portrait does look as though he's doing the backstroke in a giant menstrual flood.

Im gonna try watch it on TV because PP have said it looks more pink then red

It's too red, lovely painted through, but just too bold red.

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2024 19:32

I'm surprised I like it tbh. I know little about art or Royal paintings , but this is just different and bold.

Mandarinaduck · 14/05/2024 19:34

I think it’s fantastic, really arresting, has a very modern sense of royal grandeur.

Purplevioletsherbert · 14/05/2024 19:34

Wow it’s a lovely painting!

Merging the subject and his/her background/surroundings is very much the epitome of the unique and recognisable style and method used by Yeo.

GloriousGoosebumps · 14/05/2024 19:36

Some interesting responses from posters. I've just seen the portrait on the news and it's quite magnificent. Jonathan Yeo has captured a good likeness and I love the drama of the portrait. I'm glad it's not just another run of the mill portrait.

Yirk · 14/05/2024 19:36

I really like it, it's different.

JADS · 14/05/2024 19:41

The likeness of the KC portrait is very good and the idea is quite striking, I'm not 100% sure of it, but I bet it looks amazing in real life in a place like Buck Palace.

I love the Camilla portrait and they go well together.

That’s Yeo’s portrait style, though. He plays with the background in relation to the figure.

He looks like he's been sent to hell. Maybe the artist has actually captured what he thinks of his current situation!
