Maybe it’s because I know nothing about art but my initials thoughts are…”Huh”

From the artist:
"It was a privilege and pleasure to have been commissioned by The Drapers' Company to paint this portrait of His Majesty The King, the first to be unveiled since his Coronation. When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed. I do my best to capture the life experiences and humanity etched into any individual sitter's face, and I hope that is what I have achieved in this portrait. To try and capture that for His Majesty The King, who occupies such a unique role, was both a tremendous professional challenge, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed and am immensely grateful for."

He looks like he's being burned at the stake

I like it but just don't understand why the background is the same as his coat.
Reminds me of this:

It looks like an advert for an episode of Stranger Things where King Charles has a cameo.

Floralnomad · 14/05/2024 17:26

It’s too red for me , I like the Camilla one . The one of Queen Elizabeth in the pp looks like they copied her spitting image puppet

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/05/2024 17:27

His fantasy was to be Camilla's tampon.....

GreggsSteakBake · 14/05/2024 17:31

The head is a good likeness. I don't "get" the rest if it. colonialism?

It's excellent.

roastedrapidly · 14/05/2024 17:35

I love it!

viques · 14/05/2024 17:37

I expect he loves the way his sausage fingers are featured.

Hatfullofwillow · 14/05/2024 17:41

Don't know why they rejected mine.

Looks like a Klimt.

I've a heard a lot of people say he's a bit of a Klimt.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 14/05/2024 17:53

I love it. Jonathan Yeo is incredibly talented.

DottyPencil · 14/05/2024 17:55

I really like it.

LunaNorth · 14/05/2024 17:58

I bet it’s stunning in the flesh, so to speak.

NotJohnMajor · 14/05/2024 18:15

I think it's awful. The pink background looks terrible with the King's clothing and his face isn't right - he looks pouchy rather than having the hard line wrinkles he's been painted with. If I'd commissioned it, I'd want it redone.

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2024 18:18

I'm not an art critic but I'm not keen!
Looks like he's on fire 🔥
And now all I can hear is .... my sex is on fire!

Delphigirl · 14/05/2024 18:20

The petulant king as Camilla’s used tampax

MaryFuckingFerguson · 14/05/2024 18:26

I love it. They are quite often shite but this is rather magnificent. Possibly a bit flattering on the old sausages 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 14/05/2024 18:28

I wonder if it's intended to be a companion piece to the Camilla photo (which is fab). Although we now think blue for a boy and pink for a girl it used to be the other way round. In particular the colour blue was associated with motherhood and Mary, mother of Jesus. Whereas red/pink was associated with war and uniforms (red so you couldn't see the blood).

Mochudubh · 14/05/2024 18:29

This is what came to mind for me.

It looks like it was a decent portrait that has been attacked with red paint by some protesters

wordler · 14/05/2024 18:32

I think it's more pink than red when you see it in real life - it looked pinker in the video but more red in the still photo.

I'm not sure if I like it - I like the butterfly and the way he's painted his facial expression - but I don't really 'get' the colour wash - feel like he painted a really good portrait and then someone accidentally painted over most of it.

I'm quite a traditionalist with art though - find it hard to connect to modern and post realism.
