The King has a new portrait

Maybe it’s because I know nothing about art but my initials thoughts are…”Huh”

From the artist:
"It was a privilege and pleasure to have been commissioned by The Drapers' Company to paint this portrait of His Majesty The King, the first to be unveiled since his Coronation. When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed. I do my best to capture the life experiences and humanity etched into any individual sitter's face, and I hope that is what I have achieved in this portrait. To try and capture that for His Majesty The King, who occupies such a unique role, was both a tremendous professional challenge, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed and am immensely grateful for."

Just awful like an ad for a horror film.

Honestly wtf was the 'artist' thinking

I like it but love reading what everyone thinks here. It certainly is unusual.

It’s nice, but it also sends the message that he literally fades in to the background….?!

He doesn’t - it shows him thrusting forward

Gettingbysomehow · 15/05/2024 17:22

I absolutely love it - he is the king of swords from the tarot deck which is elemental fire - that card features the butterfly too (transformation).
I think the king is quite keen on occult symbolism given his wedding invite had the Green Man on it.
The portrait is very flattering too, you can tell right away it's him but he looks fearless and mysterious.

It's just not nice, is it? I'm roaring with laughter. Ma'am, honestly, you didn't look like that exactly. I wonder what PP said when he saw that one.

Although unflattering, she DID look like that, she was an elderly woman, and that’s how she was depicted. It’s a good likeness, but would have been better to have painted her smiling with her mouth closed.

Showing his support for the next election.

I have no idea why it ever was twisted to be sexual or why people say “he wanted to be Camilla’s tampon”. Very odd one

If you listened to the conversation you’d realise why!

I have and he says nothing like that.

I think it’d be good if the background wasn’t so full on

I know that’s what the artist was going for but if I just look at the actual figure it’s pretty good

Yes emerging from a right old mess. An analogy for what his errant son has put him through Grin.

I remember when QE2 sported a blue hat with yellow flowers circled around it very shortly after the Brexit referendum!

Didnt he say he wished he could be a tampon inside her? Or something along those lines

I can see it is technically very accomplished and like the face (and the butterfly symbolism)

However I cannot get past the uneasy feeling that he's come to reign over us from a particularly unpleasant Hell dimension ( see Buffy the Vampire Slayer circa 2000ish) and we are his snacks.

At least it's better than that Godawful statue of Diana, though 😂

No, they were joking about reincarnation and he said that knowing his luck he’d come back aa a tampon destined to be swirling about on the top of the toilet bowl for eternity.

I’ve actually Googled it to check I was right, and there’s more, she wore this with a yellow dress when she opened Parliament and announced the government 8 bills for Brexit

I mean could she have made her feelings known any more 😂😂

It puts me in mind of that character (Jonny?) from The Fast Show, who paints a perfectly nice picture before shouting 'black, black, black' and smothers it in black paint.

Only, y'know, red.🙂

StoatofDisarray · 15/05/2024 18:00

It reminds me of Piss Christ! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ

Really? All i can see is red. Would be improved by a different coloured background no end.
My friend owns an art gallery - she often tries to explain the expensive art she sells, and yeah, just lost on some of us I’m afraid 😀

I really like it. It grows on you the more you look at it.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 15/05/2024 18:32

I really love it and my eye is drawn to his face and hands. To me it shows that the uniform (representing his long years as the Prince of Wales and also the ceremonial aspects of the royal family) is fading/merging with the background and allowing the essential man behind the throne to shine.
