Part 5 of (mostly ๐Ÿ˜‚) drama-free and positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether itโ€™s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghanโ€™s fashion choices (Harryโ€™s too, on occasion ๐Ÿ˜‰), thereโ€™s plenty to discuss. Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. Hat tip to @queentim for the original inspiration.

And there it is ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Can you explain,please?

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 14/05/2024 21:05

Hydration means to keep the skin well moisturized and take good care of it. I think that among Black communities it is a matter of pride to look after oneโ€™s skin and present well moisturized. Itโ€™s pride in caring for yourself and I believe itโ€™s passed on to children: Just as the ladies in their beautiful traditional gowns and Geles take pride in being dressed well - beautifully, immaculately.

I could have the wrong end of the stick of course. Maybe Iโ€™ve totally missed the point. Which wouldnโ€™t be the first time for me. Apologies if Iโ€™m wrong.

I think that would spoil the entire point for some. Whereโ€™s that poster that mocked me as โ€œenigmaticโ€?

So, wasn't it MLE then? It was just another way of saying the ladies looked well moisturized?
They certainly did have lovely skin.

Forgive me, but I'm not sure that's exclusive to Black communities - speaking for my (White) self, I look after my skin and have passed that on to my DDs (sometimes too much, according to them Grin).
I'm not sure I "present myself well moisturized" though. I generally go for a dewy but not too shiny look.

So the white strapless outfit she wore last night is now out of stock - but I've managed to find a dupe ๐Ÿ˜‚- on Amazon. It looks like the cross pendant belonged to Diana. How lovely.

Looks like that one is sold out now, also. At least in US.

edited, clicked the wrong link.

The white dress is on pre order direct through St Agni.
This isnโ€™t a criticism as I think merching is smart, and if Meghan has negotiated with designers for complimentary products for exposure, then good for her (and much better than spending a charityโ€™s funds). But I think she has definitely merched her tour wardrobe, with both main designers taking โ€œpre-ordersโ€ for the dresses that Meghan wore on the trip.

Um I'm no fashion expert but that dress looks like a tent on her!
It looks like maternity wear?

I love it on her, just the way it is. The colour is great too and a welcome departure from the quieter colours she's been wearing on the tour.

The yellow, right? Reminds me of old 30โ€™s and 40โ€™s Hollywood Chiffon. I do like it.

AnnieSF · 14/05/2024 23:53

I think it's to do with skin not being ashy? Not moisturised.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 15/05/2024 03:38

@LaMarschallin As I said, I donโ€™t know that I do understand for sure yet. I was just hoping I got it right. I think I made that clear. I loved that skullbabe and Delectable offered up some of their knowledge in regard to Nigeria and its culture, but itโ€™s my job to inform myself otherwise.

Iโ€™m in Australia and I couldnโ€™t tell you what the initals MLE stand for until now a- because I just looked it up and found the meaning that made the most sense to me its Multicultural London English? No wonder Iโ€™d not heard of it on Australia.

.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 15/05/2024 03:53

I hope Meghan is not paying for all her clothes. Sheโ€™s a boon to these clothing brands.

There was some earlier speculation on the RF forum that Meghanโ€™s first dress may be too long because she has to return it unaltered. I canโ€™t credit that. I think fashion brands would be almost throwing clothes at her hoping sheโ€™ll wear something of theirs.

I loved that white dress on her. I think my favorite dress though remains the yellow one she wore on the night she was honored. That yellow looks stunning on her. Itโ€™s the third time weโ€™ve seen that dress, I believe.

I've quoted your post in full to avoid misunderstandings since you said subsequently:

As I said, I donโ€™t know that I do understand for sure yet. I was just hoping I got it right. I think I made that clear

You absolutely did make that clear in the second paragraph of your post. I should have quoted you in full.
It's just that you sounded like you knew what it might mean in your first paragraph and I much preferred your explanation to the one which Googling had suggested.
But it seems you're as ignorant as I am.

I very rarely @ people as I personally find it irritating depending on how it's used. It can seem to demand attention. Generally, if I quote someone on a thread, I use the double asterisks to highlight their names and then assume they'll eventually see it and either 1) want to contribute and are ignoring me or 2) haven't seen it and/or have lost interest in the thread and haven't returned. However sometimes I want to answer with some useful information or think I have a useful post for the poster or want to make sure I'm not ignored or overlooked.

However, skullbabe started the thread and has been active on it very recently.
So I feel it not unreasonable to ask directly:

@skullbabe What do you mean by "hydrated" in your post?

You said in your OP:

Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend.

I looked up MLE as it was an unfamiliar term to me and thought it was an opportunity to educate myself.
You were asked very early on what "MLE" meant. You - jokingly, I assume - said:

It depends on which is your favourite type of jollof.

I've since said that a friend from Ghana made the best jollof I'd ever tasted. I know there are different types of jollof but accepted that I didn't understand the relevance of this.

I looked up MLE as I didn't know the term so was expecting to see a lot of new words. I hadn't noticed any MLE in the thread (in fact, I'd asked about this, but got no reply) before your mention of "hydrated".
I don't understand what you mean by "hydrated" in this context. Please you you tell me what it means.

I hope I've made myself "clear", Wickedlywearynamechanged

(On the plus side, we had a power cut last night so I sloped off to bed early. Got woken up a few minutes ago by the bedside lamp suddenly coming into life!
Can't remember such a long outage)

CoffeeCantata · 15/05/2024 07:01

I'll leave you to it then!

jeffgoldblum · 15/05/2024 07:57

Just reading through, using familiar words that have other meanings specifically to one demographic on an international forum and then mocking and refusing to explain when asked , seems exclusionary and unkind at best , a deliberate ploy or trap at worst!

Serenster · 15/05/2024 08:10

The repeated clapping hands certainly suggested a trap, to me.

jeffgoldblum · 15/05/2024 08:35

Indeed @Serenster !

I am now wondering if โ€œPost-itโ€ is part of the code. Am I a Post-it? Iโ€™d rather be a highlighter pen.

Some more news this morning. Archewell Foundation found out their check hadnโ€™t been received. CA automatically puts on delinquency list. Archewell is now in good standing after this was rectified. Governor Newsom has had to say "I just want folks to know, not only are they in compliance, it was a technical paperwork issue that was wildly over-hyped.โ€

For those of you who are positive - over the next 24 hours there will be a concerted effort to make this statement and or Newsom negative. Make a mental note and letโ€™s see if we can play bingo. I have already thought of a couple ๐Ÿคฃ.

Oh you are back! Whatโ€™s โ€œhydratedโ€, please?

skullbabe · 15/05/2024 08:51

@LaMarschallin I said there may be not there only will be in my OP. My reference to jollof was tongue in cheek as you well surmised but also as deliberate as someone from my part of the UK knowing the answer to โ€˜haโ€™ ya go a dickie boy?โ€™ - which coincidentally is not MLE. Hydrated and moisturised is related to being non ashy with your hair laid and being generally non problematic. The ladies were on point. Simples.

Great ๐Ÿ‘ they got that sorted and cleared up quickly.

As you wrote skullbabe , โ€˜newsome negativeโ€™ Iโ€™m going with that, but not only that. The minute it was announced they googled the Govenor. Heโ€™s a politician and used to this type of shiteโ€ฆ buuuutttt heโ€™s not yet taken on the likes of โ€˜Meghans Moleโ€™ et al. He knows not what heโ€™s in for. There will be other forms of attack and discrediting. Iโ€™m here for the bingo.

I'm in the UK and had to look it up.

My parents and DH family came from different part of midlands and had different dialects . Occasionally in RL I may say one - kids usually ignore IL dialect words and go on context but pick my much rarer ones up with disbelief - bit most people use context to work out meaning.

However MN can be very rude about them. Sometime you just don't realise they are dialect words or sayings - but in my family Mom,Mum and Mam are all used but some threads on here people disbelieve that's possible and try and insist all UK accents have Mum.

Hydrated and moisturised is related to being non ashy with your hair laid and being generally non problematic. The ladies were on point. Simples

Interesting as I tried googling a wide range of terms and UK dialects including MLE and wider that part of UK and nothing like that came up.

I did start to cynically wonder if it was some Horrible Histories Mr. Hexagon situation -when it's just more unfamiliarity with yet another UK dialect google being imprecate research tool.

I thought the Archewell stuff was just admin though it looks poor after all the good PR and frankly suggests some hiring/competency issues with their staff.

Well it will be very clear now where you can see all those mumsnetters who posted negative comments stay silent and not even apologise. The same names who were very vocal at calling out other posters for nasty comments about Kate and demanding they apologise.....the silence is deafening...maybe they are part of the Kate squad!
