Just saw the photo of Harry's bleeding polo pony on a different thread.

Why hasn't he been prosecuted for this animal abuse?

@CoffeeCantata And there are difficult conversations to be had about the balance of wildlife and humans-particularly in areas where conservation has been successful.

Is it because the killing takes place in plain sight, and you can hear the guns, reminding you of how meat gets on to our plates?

It's worth noting that deer meat apparently becomes inedible if the animal isn't killed cleanly or even gets a hint that a shooting party is near but anyway I think it's more about the repulsive glee the 'hunters' display.

I've posted this before but it's Harold's own horrific account of his 'blooding' at a Balmoral shoot.

How anyone can find fun in that is beyond me.

This is where context and understanding is important. Blooding is distasteful, but its supposed to be. There is no point following a hunt and then hanging about refusing to look when the animal is killed, so rubbing the newcomer's face in it is about making sure they face the death of the animal. Everyone laughs because they've all had to go through it and know how unpleasant it is. When shooting, even from young, you carry a decent hunting knife to make sure you could finish the job cleanly and quickly. This is facing up to what you are doing and taking responsibility. People who aren't prepared to do that have no busienss shooting or even eating meat.
Also, it isn't true that shot deer can't be eaten if they know guns are about. Its only if the meat risks being contaminated by previous injury, or (and this is where I only listen with half an ear) if the insides are removed quickly after death.
And another also, if the hunt and the social side of it wasn't fun, then people wouldn't do it, and whether you agree or not it is important work.

if the insides *aren't removed quickly after death.

Did you read the article?

Harold's experience was barbaric, not 'distasteful'

He's also the one making the claims about the circumstances in which the quality of the meat can be affected and I'd expect one half of 'The Killer Wales' to know.

Deer shooting to manage numbers is work that can be done professionally by people who have taken qualifications and whose ethos is to act respectfully.

The actions of the Balmoral staff member were neither professional nor respectful.
