To continue the discussion...

What next? What did the launch aim to achieve? Did it get the desired result?

The idea that press barons either would or could do that is entirely fanciful

"Press barons" sounds a bit Charles Foster Kane.

I imagine such people, if they still exist, have their sights set on folks way more important than the Duchess of Orchard Riviera. Or is that, Riviera Orchard?

RandomColours · 09/04/2024 15:56

One other thing about ARO (someone compared it to a parrot squeaking “hello”).

I know it’s been commented on upthread but the name American Riviera Orchard. Apart from the pretension - it’s 10 whole syllables of gobbledygook!!!! I cannot remember it all. I can barely say it reading slowly! Compare it with Goop or Apple etc.

I know there’s no CEO, but they have plenty of advisors, each other and maybe even a mate might pop round for coffee and say it’s a mess of a name. Like the black ball gown at the Bob Marley Jamaican film, how can you get it sooooo wrong? We shall have to see!

Just yesterday I was saying that it was nice not to have every thread get derailed into stale old arguments about Meghan's 'treatment'.

I guess it was good while it lasted.

The upside to ARO is that I’d never heard of Flamingo before and now I have! They must be delighted.(by the increase in global publicity I mean! Not my specific new knowledge of them…)

I think their own supporters are equally to blame for them being “pilloried” if that’s even truly happening.

For instance, there is no “young mother” involved. That is a 42 year old woman who was a multimillionaire with a great deal of life experience when she decided to go on Oprah. People find that kind of disingenuous positioning frustrating and just want to counter it. In doing so they risk being called any number of names.

Sorry for simply offering a different opinion IcedPurple!

I guess I don’t understood the purpose of this thread tbh.

"Edited to say: I can’t be a member of the Sussex Squad because I literally do not know what that is!"

Only last week at least one very regular poster was claiming that very same thing (not to know what the Sussex Squad is). She has since disappeared.

Ah a faux naive post! Welcome back!

I'm not sure how you didn't understand the purpose of this thread since it's stated very clearly in the title and first post. It's about the purported 'ARO'. Just in case that wasn't already clear. So now you know!

IsoldeWagner · 09/04/2024 15:53

They don't take advice.
They're duplicitous and untrustworthy.
They're arrogant, self absorbed and greedy.
No "press barons" needed.

Absolutely!

Jf20 · 09/04/2024 16:26

Seriously though, like the woman or not, doesn’t it make you feel uncomfortable that any young mother is pilloried to that extent, no matter who it is or what they have supposed to have done?

I guess this is context and you are quite elderly? It’s unusual to call Megan a young mother, it reads quite manipulative to be honest. She’s 42 years old with a load of life experience. Is she pilloried, sure, as is Harry, but I’m not sure it’s to the extent they pilloried the royals. And for a lot of money. And that’s before we even start on the bullying claims.

the reason harry and Megan are pilloried is due to their behaviour. And I for one wouldn’t class her as a young mother.

Sorry? Not sure of relevance?

That wasn’t me I promise. I have heard the term but I have no idea what it is or if it is just a sm construct?

I thought Mumsnet has asked us not to go tribal? It’s very difficult to offer a different opinion to the majority without being accused of it though.

I am a Republican but that doesn’t mean I am automatically a supporter of H & M either.

I don’t think they have handled things particularly well.

But I think it’s unfair to disparage their attempts at standing on their own two feet when the business has only just opened.

And most of all I dislike lthe idea of people taking collective delight in another person’s public battering in the press. Especially when they have young dc.

I hope that opinion is allowed.

IcedPurple · 09/04/2024 16:34

Has the business opened?

What is it selling?

We're talking about middle aged parents with massive unearned wealth. To read the above, you'd think they were just out of school.

All opinions are allowed, of course. But being allowed to share my own opinion has never protected that opinion from the scrutiny of others. Nor would I bother to share it if it wasn’t something I was happy to put up for discussion.

Clearly Meghan and Harry do not share the opinion that a “young mother” should be protected in the way being described above. They both openly had a go at one, on Oprah, in Spare and through their collaboration with Scobie.

IcedPurple · 09/04/2024 16:39

The 'young mother' thing is so weird to me. Apart from the fact that Meghan is not one, why does it matter? Is it fine to 'pillory' someone if they do not have children?

EdithWeston · 09/04/2024 16:39

Rememberthereasonswhy · 09/04/2024 15:53

Yep that’s about it Geebray 😀😄😉

Seriously though, like the woman or not, doesn’t it make you feel uncomfortable that any young mother is pilloried to that extent, no matter who it is or what they have supposed to have done?

It does bother me and makes me more inclined to support them tbh.

And if I may say so, I don’t think threads like this on sm help. None of us know her. What we have seen of her has largely been filtered through a negative prism of press or tv interest. Oprah was out to make money just like the rest.

Most people on Mumsnet are reasonably articulate and intelligent. Most are aware of how the press and media makes a buck and it’s not through positivity.

Edited to say: I can’t be a member of the Sussex Squad because I literally do not know what that is!

Edited

There is plenty of evidence from interviews and books which they put in to the public domain, themselves and entirely of their own volition.

I’m in my sixth decade.

I’m describing her as a young mother because she has young dc. Forties to me is quite young, yes!

Is offering an alternative opinion seen as manipulative nowadays? Surely it’s just an alternative viewpoint?

Tbh I don’t like the idea of anyone being piled on by the press at any age. I really hate it. It’s not an equal or fair battle is it? One individual against powerful global media organisations?

Absolutely right and it works both ways I hope!
