It's tax time and Charity Watch is revising charity ratings. Archewell Foundation is now old enough to have a rating:

Here is info about Charity Watch for the curious: https://www.charitywatch.org/about-charitywatch/mission-goals

I suspect that Archewell won’t exist for very much longer

Ouch!

Time for the Sussex Squad to put their money where their mouth is. Archewell sends money to good causes - they could keep it going perhaps?

OP your post is very misleading. I opened the link and read it only to find that the organisation said the foundation is not old enough to have a rating.

If you read the rest of it, they are reviewing other information about it as well as info not provided.

I know. But you say in your post "Archewell Foundation is now old enough to have a rating". That is not true. So your post is misleading.

“While Archewell Foundation does report having basic policies in place such as Whistleblower, Conflict of Interest, and Document Destruction and Retention (IRS Form 990, Part VI, Section B), a board consisting of only two people who are also married to each other does not inspire confidence that enough board independence exists to ensure that such policies are robustly enforced.”

If you tell me how to edit the thread title I will be happy to change it to review from rating.

You have to contact MNHQ to edit the title.
Simply make it accurate. It is a report, not a rating. The report says the Foundation has not existed long enough to receive a rating.

I think it would be an endless chore to make every thread title here accurate. Surely people will read the review if they are interested. No one is expecting AP standards here on MN.

Anyone interested in facts will have known that prior to now the page was vacant of any details at all.

@BemusedAmerican have you also checked Charity Navigator?

@BenefitWaffle just asked the to change "report" to "title". I still find the report to be useful.

Delinquent registration in California. Not sure why they need to register there as I thought they were registered in Delaware and they should not have to register in CA unless they are fundraising significantly there.

Unfortunately GuideStar is now merged with the Foundation Center. You need access to their subscription database to see their rating.

From charity navigator.

Review Before Proceeding: An organization receives this alert if matters of concern relating to the organization have been reported in a media outlet Charity Navigator deems reliable, but to Charity Navigator’s knowledge, no legal proceeding has commenced or the matter is not of a legal nature.

@AliceOlive accuracy matters when discussing a charity, both in title and post.

No. They were registered in Delaware because the tax rules are quite lenient in that state. I am also not sure about the California registration. Possibly because the address is on Wiltshire Blvd in Beverly Hills?

I can probably get access to it but don’t care that much.

I know our state uses charity navigator in licensing investigations. Failure to register is a common issue. It doesn’t imply anything beyond missing some paperwork. Charities must register in any state where they fund raise (bar a few states) if fundraising is above X amount. It is usually cheap to register and then they also have to submit financials annually.

I don’t get the impression they are fundraising but instead using their own funds and perhaps a few large donations from friends.

I really don’t think so.

The Foundation suffers the same issues as many family foundations do. Most of these have a small number of related people overseeing the Foundation, which means a potential lack of scrutiny.

Archewell Foundation had a drop in donations in its second year. This is pretty normal with new Foundations. In the first year the focus is always on ensuring a decent amount of income to ensure sustainability for future years. A drop in income in the second year is normal, but normally you would expect year 3s income to be comparable to year 2.

No, see above. Just a requirement anywhere if you take any funds from someone living in the state.

I had to think about it. Bourbon.

Wow. So if someone in Alaska donates $20, you have to file in Alaska?

On the contrary, thread titles are amended for accuracy relatively often on MN. If your purpose is to communicate with others, you care about accuracy and clarity.

Not for an amount that small. I think it’s after $30K in my state. But it usually requires an annual registration and some other submissions.

I think larger organizations use a service like this.

Smaller ones probably screw it up quite a bit. I would expect their accountant to be handling it.
