Photography hobbyists and aficionados unite.

Welcome to the thread where you can display and discuss some of the most iconic photos captured by some of the most talented photographers.

These aren't your average Instagram photos. Oh no. These are the ones that live in your head rent free. The Marie Kondo of photos that spark joy. Where everything in the photo is perfection.

This thread is meant to be fun, light-hearted, and showcase the talents of those behind the lens.

Please do not derail, and do not use this thread to be snarky or have a dig about subjects you don't like, or to other posters. If you cannot keep in the spirit of the thread, then please don't participate or spoil it for others.

Alexandra was apparently a very possessive mother herself and I don’t think she made things easy for Queen Mary!

Presumably because he was divorced.

Under the Royal Marriages Act, the marriage would have needed the Queen's consent. But the Queen was head of the Church of England, and the church did not recognise remarriage of divorces. It put the Queen in an impossible position. And a very painful one, given her strong Christian faith.

When she was 25, Margaret could have married without the Queen's consent, but in the end decided not to. As pp said, she would have had to give up her place in the line of succession (she was third at that point) and her civil list payments. It's also suggested her infatuation had cooled off by then.

I think Margaret's problem was that she never found a real purpose in life to keep her grounded. Unlike Philip, Charles and Anne, for example, who all had causes and interests they were or are deeply committed to.

Good post. For years I heard the 'They wouldn't let her marry Townsend etc' and then one day someone explained that she could have married him, BUT...

The time apart helped it to cool.

Someone else has wondered why THEY allowed her to marry a bisexual man but not a divorced one. No doubt a few people in the land knew about Tony Armstrong-Jones's sex life but I doubt if the grey suits or most of the public knew all about it at the time of the wedding.

Good post. For years I heard the 'They wouldn't let her marry Townsend etc' and then one day someone explained that she could have married him, BUT...

This is completely true - the Queen and Anthony Eden hammered out a compromise proposal, but Margaret herself said no, ultimately. As explained in this BBC article:

But in fact, papers available in the National Archives since 2004 show that the Queen and Eden drew up a plan in 1955 under which Princess Margaret could marry Townsend while keeping her royal title and her civil list allowance of £6,000 a year plus another £9,000 on marriage. She could live in this country and even continue with public duties if the public approved, as was highly likely.
However, she would have to renounce her rights of succession and those of her children.

Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret in The Crown

Did the Queen stop Princess Margaret marrying Peter Townsend?

The lavish Netflix drama, The Crown, perpetuates a myth about Princess Margaret's love affair with a Battle of Britain pilot.

I loved this photo of the Wessexes at the coronation. Lady Louise looked absolutely stunning; so poised and elegant; and Sophie looked so proud. I was also very surprised at how tall James had got all of a sudden!

I hadn't seen a full length shot of Lady Louise's frock before. It looks very fresh and summery, and I like the length.

Will be interesting to see what she does when she finishes at St Andrews.

This is Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III. I thought she has a bit of a resemblance to Lady Sarah Chatto.

Iirc the dress that Lady Louise was wearing just a couple of posts above was Sophie's.

Love love this thread 💞

@LaMarschallin rhank you for that link to the article about the dress and Diana, it brought back such great memories for me as I adored her from day one. Thank you to all the posts, I have loved looking through the photos and seeing ones I hadn’t seen before. It has to be commended how wonderful most of them are even in off guarded moments. It must be daunting knowing every expression is being picked up by photographers! I would hate it!

LaMarschallin · 10/03/2024 07:56

Greenly3

Pleased it brought back good memories Smile

Sarvanga38 · 10/03/2024 09:08

Princess Margaret was obviously very beautiful, but I think the reason there are so many fabulous photos - including some very intimate ones that would have been unheard of for other royals - is the very talented photographer husband.

I know Diana’s dress was pretty unpopular but I have always loved this photo, it’s just so Cinderella in this shot.

I loved it.
A real fairytale dress.

I just came to see if anyone had posted that yet!

I keep going back to the one of the grandchildren's vigil. The colours, the symmetry of the way everyone is positioned, the memory of the hushed atmosphere of the lying in state - I spent quite a lot of time watching it at the time. Whoever thought of live streaming it should be congratulated, it was a great way to allow everyone to participate and pay their respects.

I started a thread re the new photo and OMG some posters have lost the plot.

Yes the contrast between the two threads is astonishing. I hope they don't find their way over here as this is such a lovely one.

They'd soon be seen orf the grounds.

New photo of Kate and the children today is absolutely beautiful ❤️

Abouttimeforanamechange · 10/03/2024 16:40

I've only dipped into a couple of those threads, but some of what I saw was deeply unpleasant. I don't know how they've been allowed to stand.

I wonder if Catherine will join the rest of the family for the walk down to St George's Chapel for the Easter service? I remember last year there were some very nice spring outfits on show from the ladies, and it was when I first noticed that James Wessex had shot up.

eggandonion · 10/03/2024 16:59

When is the Garter ceremony? It always looks slightly strange...Id love to dress up for the day!
I saw Dianas wedding dress and a selection of wedding presents in Cambridge. It was a real little girls dream dress!

Well done king...I think the Edinburghs are doing really well. For a while it looked like they were a bit sidelined.
The age difference between Charles and Edward is interesting...they are like a half way between the King and the Waleses.

BalloonSlayer · 10/03/2024 17:46

Has anyone posted this one?
Apparently Patrick Lichfield had one more picture left on his roll of film and he knew everyone else had run out. So shouted out to them all that they had finished, they all collapsed in a heap laughing and he got this picture.
