Why is Harry a saluting if he is an ordinary citizen?

I know there are some military experts on here. Why would he be saluting these sailors? Is it because he was once in the Army? He's not in military uniform. What's the deal here?

I am also wondering why they are saluting him. A foreign veteran, not an uniform.

My DH just said “and you don’t salute some stupid ginger from another country.” 🤣

Judge Advocate General.

here:
The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, or JAG Corps, is a government law organization and one of the country's largest law firms. It defends the Army and its Soldiers in all military legal matters.

AliceOlive · 28/02/2024 13:51

There is an amazing amount of legal work that goes on which most of us never think about. In war, for instance, they manage all the paperwork and ensure our military actions are properly authorized and within the law. Never thought about paperwork at war!

Very interesting job! So did he wear a uniform? Sorry if I'm being nosey! I don't know an awful lot about the military. It's interesting.

Yes, every day when he was on active duty. I met him after he had gone into Army Reserve though. So he only wore a uniform once a month and during annual drill. He’s now fully retired and I miss that uniform but not those weekends away. 😁

Brace Up = sort of standing tall, shoulders back... sort of like standing to attention, but not the drill movement.

JSMill · 28/02/2024 14:48

I'm assuming H invited himself to whatever that was. I don't think the American military is in need of being visited by royalty.

One of the cringiest scenes in the NF documentary was when H and M visited an American army base and walked into a room full of soldiers who clearly had been forced to be there. They looked completely unimpressed and uninterested.

AliceOlive · 28/02/2024 14:55

I personally adored QE but would never have curtsied to her. I cringed when our president bowed to another head of state. That’s why this saluting Harry nonsense bothers me. I honor his service but he holds no rank in our military.

Thank you (although I don't know what the drill movement is either, but never mind Grin)

In the US veterans are permitted and in some cases expected to salute or return a salute whether in or out of uniform. As Harry is a veteran and this is in the US then there is no problem with it.

What is a bit odd is that Harry is using the navy salute here rather than the army one and to my knowledge never served in the navy.

That's not a naval salute

And the key point - in some cases - this really isn’t typically one of them.

Saluting indoors might, for example be done if you were summoned to the CO’s office when first reporting for duty. But not typically to salute some retired guy from another country’s military.

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 15:22

He's a veteran and he has a real, not an honorary rank.

suki1964 · 28/02/2024 10:31

Perhaps because he still holds onto the title Lieutenant commander ( Royal Navy )?

I hold that title all be it retired and you do not salute in civilian clothes

Not in the US military he doesn’t.

My husband does and he wouldn’t be saluted walking around out of uniform even before he was retired.

Our military only salutes when both parties are in full uniform and that’s only outside. (No caps inside!) Navy does a few things differently but then he’s not US Navy, either.

Surely if you're taking part, for whatever reason, in another country's military commemoration, you follow that country's protocols?

That's not how I recall it working way back but you need to find somebody on here with access to a handy copy of Kings Regulations to come up with chapter and verse.

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 15:49

Yes, exactly. We are telling you there is no US military protocol that involves a retired officer from another country to salute or be saluted. No protocol for a member of the US military not in uniform to be saluted except in circumstances not met by this situation.

It’s a mockery.

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 16:17

Fair enough. I thought the US services do salute out of uniform and this would be a respect to fallen comrades situation.

Bette than some of the other things going on this week around here. I’m not blaming him for this, either. I just think it’s weird and dumb.
