Is there a thread for this? Is anyone watching?

Its like an Aldi coronation compared to the UK

It's not a coronation, but a proclamation. The UK is the only country that goes in for the whole circus nowadays.

Astridspuzzle · 14/01/2024 13:34

I'm watching it here. You don't see the actual meeting www.dr.dk/drtv/se/tronskifte_-hm-kong-frederik-10-udraabes-til-konge-af-danmark_432125

Astridspuzzle · 14/01/2024 13:35

I tell a lie - you can see the Queen and the new King now

thegruffalosmaw · 14/01/2024 13:36

bloody love the 'pissoir' signs in the background. I thought it said 'piss off', until I googled and found it means 'toilet'

Is it on any TV channels?

EncantoSpice · 14/01/2024 13:44

I’m glad we have a coronation, without the pomp and circumstance what’s the point

thegruffalosmaw · 14/01/2024 13:52

think its on bbc, at least its on the news website

CNN streamed it live on youtube.

I really enjoyed it. Far more discreet and scaled-back from the last Coronation we watched. Although.. yes, a tad boring in parts. Poor Princess Josephine looked stressed and upset, Queen Consort Mary (I think that's her title now?) kept rubbing her back and whispering to her.

The crowds loved it though. The CNN stream had no subtitles, but you didn't need to speak Danish to understand what was happening.

Also the horses were beautiful. 😀

It is such a shame we didn't do similar when Charles ascended - we could have used the money to help tackle some of the much more important and pressing challenges facing as a nation.

Overtheatlantic · 15/01/2024 15:53

I thought it was touching and joyful.

Actually I thought that compared with Charles' coronation it was tasteful, joyful and more meaningful.

ajandjjmum · 15/01/2024 17:02

I think Charles' Coronation was incredible.

The Danish one was obviously far simpler, and the family looked less used to 'royal' events, but it was still lovely and very moving. The Crown Prince looked apprehensive and really concerned about his grandmother and the new King looked a little too gleeful!

Enko · 15/01/2024 18:23

I disagree @ajandjjmum that they appeared " less" used to. The Scandinavian Royal families are far less formal than the British are. So this is a normal way for them to present themselves.

I loved it. I watched it all on DR website who streamed live and through my Cousin who went live a few times for those of us who were not there (I am Danish of birth)

I appreciated Charles' coronation too However, I knew going in to watch this that it would be a very different affair to what Charles had.

Seeing King Frederick X with red eyes from the emotion of the moment for me was a wonderful expression. This moved him and he was there for his people.

Much like his motto Forbundne, forpligtet, for Kongeriget Danmark" (English: "United, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark")

wildernesssw · 16/01/2024 17:12

Every country has different traditions. I am glad the Danish people had whatever was meaningful for them

heartofglass23 · 16/01/2024 19:43

On Australian tv they've got it as headline rolling news saying it's the first time an Australian has ascended a European throne!

The Queen was born in Tasmania.

They are so proud of her.

Sweden99 · 17/01/2024 14:49

Some Danes were very upset at Brits referring to it as a coronation. They got very cross as royalists do about these things.
The Danish Royal family are very popular here, and I think the main difference is the press are happy to cover up any issues. The country is also small enough that if you live near the palace, you might well bump into them on occasion. You also know many of the secrets and they are not that much different to the British royal family in their behaviour.

Well said!
