The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

As with any charitable event it needs to be established that monies are not going in the wrong direction as has been suggested so I imagine this will be looked at.

I am surprised then, that you're not on the thread about the Duchies and the former Queen and now King both having lied about the bona vacantia money going to charity, when tis being used for tier own private property. This snit just a rumour or media gossip, it's an actual verified fact.

YupIKnow · 04/12/2023 09:55

@Iwantcakeeveryday you are watching my posting history? Now that's a bit weird.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/12/2023 09:56

I am on that thread. You're not. No need to watch your history, you're not that important to me.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/12/2023 09:56

nice try at deflection though....

things might be getting a bit boring on some of the other threads

Yes... especially when no one is disagreeing.

my thoughts as well.

As someone said previously - this is a mostly positive thread which most of us posting in have dropped in when there is news from time to time. There are countless negative threads with variations of every way people could be negative about the Sussexes- and Meghan in particular. It’s more than apparent that for many this commentary on those threads is for sport - and many seem aggrieved that there are mostly no detractors to argue with about the new variation of how Meghan particularly is the worst of the worst.

This thread is pleasant because it’s sedate, positive and a nice catch-up re: the games.

Roussette · 04/12/2023 11:42

Absolutely @skullbabe. And despite clarion calls asking where we are, I'd rather plant 1,000 cockroach eggs in my earhole than put myself through yet another of those threads saying the same thing over and over...

Thx. Yes it is, repetition endlessly never interested me.

How rude .

AliceOlive · 04/12/2023 14:55

Why keep mentioning the other threads and their content if you aren’t interested and aren’t reading them? How would you know what’s in them?

Following on from Harry's visit to Canada, Invictus have set out what will be happening.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will take place from 8 to 16 February and will see up to 550 wounded, injured and sick service personnel and Veterans from up to 25 nations travel to British Columbia to compete in both winter and indoor adaptive sporting events.
These Games will be delivered in collaboration with the First Nations and indigenous communities of Canada.

All about it here, with some lovely snowy pics!

TallerSally · 04/12/2023 15:27

Thanks @Roussette - another year and a bit to go, and it looks like preparations are on track. Lovely. And wow, how I'd love to go skiing in Whistler, it looks out of this world!

I'm particularly interested in the "collaboration with the First Nations and indigenous communities of Canada" which I think is a nice, respectful twist - and very much reflecting of Harry and Meghan's inclusive approach - which also comes through with what they support through Archewell (eg Troup 6000).

Do we know what role the First Nations and indigenous communities will be playing?

Roussette · 04/12/2023 15:30

They have said this @TallerSally and I agree it's very much the message they would want to give out.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will be held on the traditional territories of the Lil̓wat7úl (Líl̓wat), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The Vancouver Whistler 2025 organisers are committed to engaging with each Nation, addressing Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and respecting Indigenous protocols in all aspects of the Games.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/12/2023 15:35

Thanks @Roussette
