The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

He's such a smug, supercilious twat

Thanks @MissElinorDashwood that was a great post and summarised all that I am uncomfortable with in the media reporting of Invivtus

How lovely!

More signs of H&M 'carrying on as usual', doing their philanthropy thing, completely ignoring the ever-dwindling small group mostly in Britain/Murdoch universe raging against them 24/7/365.

And wow, a first ever Invictus winter games. Quite ambitious. I have to confess I can barely imagine what winter sports look like for the physical ability impaired. They'll be doing alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, skeleton and wheelchair curling.

You can see some of the work involved in pulling this off at this link:

A great way to drum up enthusiasm as we await February 2025!

As ever, well done, H&M

He received a very warm welcome and was joined by Meghan

So lovely to see President Biden giving Prince Harry, his Invictus Games and the US Invictus team the nod at yesterday's National Christmas Lighting Ceremony.

Great to see sensible people refusing to get drawn into the ridiculous RF/British tabloid/Murdoch media anti-M&H psychodrama, and just plainly and simply giving credit for good social impact work when credit is due.

Go Harry, go Biden and go Invictus!!! 😀

See y'all in Vancouver 2025

What a cruel and cowardly man Harry is. To let his SIL and father suffer like this. Of course he won't feel a bit sorry. He never does.

And yet they were fine with letting his wife and him suffer...

As an aside, Omid Scobie and his publisher must be secretly delighted at all the extra publicity he's getting via the mail. I'm sure it would have gone largely unnoticed otherwise.

derxa · 01/12/2023 13:37

And yet they were fine with letting his wife and him suffer... Were they? Well Harry was quite fine with not getting mental health support for his pregnant wife. It was apparently Kate's job to help her

This thread is about the Invictus Games. Take your issues about the gossip book to the multiple threads about it.

Such a nice nod to the veterans and Invictus.

I think Omid is proving there is such a thing as bad publicity. If the Sussexes don't sue about the leaking and publishing of personal correspondence then some will say it reflects badly on them and points to them leaking. If the RF sues then not only does Omid's book likely get pulled, he also has to reveal his sources and prove their claims are accurate. The fact the claims were not published in the UK book means the publisher's solicitors think they'd lose that case.

And the actual work of the Invictus Games Foundation goes unsung.

Apart from the events with Harry, what else of their programme can anyone on this thread name without googling or other checking? - for example the current Adventure?

Yes it's great when the whole circus around Harry brings a bit of attention to Invictus. But I've yet too be persuaded that any of those who appear to swoop on those occasions really follow the Foundation's work.

(And as an aside, the self-identification as squaddies is effing crass in Britain - are they really trying to align themselves to squaddies in its usual meaning? Even in the context of a military charity?)

Perhaps read the whole thread and the one before, we spoke a lot about what the organisation does and shared a lot of the stories from those who benefit. The series brought awareness to a lot of people.

LadyMuckingabout · 02/12/2023 09:33

Not really. I think they’ve clouded it. Which is a real shame.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 02/12/2023 09:41

Well the people that they are there to help don't think so, and they're who matter. Not people online who hate Harry for frivolous reasons.

LadyMuckingabout · 02/12/2023 09:47

Wrong again. They’d all love Prince William (andKate) as their patrons. Old Harry, yes. New Harry, not so much. Harry has no official standing now. And with all the shenanigans surrounding him (not the media: he chose to do Oprah/Spare etc) he has weakened his appeal to those who have served.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 02/12/2023 09:50

@LadyMuckingabout I will take their own words and voices over you speaking for them. There are threads going where you can say all manner of ugly vicious things about Harry, we've left you all to it. So please leave this thread to what it is meant to be about, The Invictus Games and the people they help.

LadyMuckingabout · 02/12/2023 09:54

Well, talk about the Invictus Games, then. It’s in the rf section, though, and rather than being solely about the games it’s a thinly-disguised love-in for M&H.

I'm sorry that you don't like people posting nice things about them, but it isn't against guidelines. The thread has pretty much stuck to the topic, but I have asked MNHQ to take a look now.

Samcro · 02/12/2023 12:10

why shouldn't there be a positive thread about H&M , there are plenty of other not nice ones people can post on.
