The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

It’s green 🤔😆

The Hertz one!!

(Although the teal one was a lovely fabric too)

When a show has a panel of white people berating and criticising a person of colour, I don't see the problem pointing it out. In fact it's the type of thing that gets discussed all the time. Other examples would be a panel of men discussing a women who complained about sexism, that would rightly be pointed out because it could lead to bias on their part or a lack of understanding of what its like to be a woman and therefore the panel should have a balance of opinions from men and women. People point that kind of thing out all the time. Similarly a panel of media who are all white discussing a woman who has accused their industry and some of their employers of racism and unfair treatment would not be considered by many of us to be a balanced panel. I would say similar if there was an election on and a tv show had a panel discussing the leaders debate or something with only labour supporters on the panel.

As per MNHQ instructions many many times, I shall be ignoring the personal remarks levelled at other posters.

I get your point except the part re the panel being all Labour supporters, that's assuming that all the panel are racist

Iwantcakeeveryday · 18/09/2023 12:58

No it isn't. I am showing it would be a biased panel or a panel that is unable/unwilling to see the other 'side' of whatever the issue is.

PrincessOfTigger · 18/09/2023 13:13

What is going on 🤨

Iwantcakeeveryday · 18/09/2023 13:16

what do you mean?

PrincessOfTigger · 18/09/2023 13:19

I am not following at all. First there was talk about Meghan’s IG wardrobe, then there was some drama most of which is deleted, now there’s some panel or other and everyone is racist. It’s impossible to follow.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 18/09/2023 13:21

then don't worry about it! If you didn't;t see the other posts you aren't following and don't need to. Nobody is saying everyone is racist, please don't go down that road again with me.

While I see your theme are you saying that all people of a certain colour will have the same views about meghan?

YupIKnow · 18/09/2023 13:37

Yes however let's move on. Invictus is finished - it was a great event and let's hope Harry gets inspired to do better!

upinaballoon · 18/09/2023 13:40

I have seen Meghan in a red dress which I liked, in the style of it, better than the wobbly strapless red number which she wore last year to a bit of a do.

I like the colour of the teal dress very much. Yes, whoever said 'teal' rather than just 'green'. It sounds like the colours suggested for wool to knit twinsets from patterns in Woman's Weekly circa 1954. To be strapless or not to be strapless depends a great deal on the state of the shoulders to be revealed and the ability to keep the bosom where one wants it to be.

I saw a still picture of 4 people. Meghan in the strapless dress is one. Harry was next to her, posing in the nicest sense of the word, knowing the photo was being taken, and I smiled because he is doing what men do, who have been taught to march and to stand to attention. He is very nearly pushing out his chest as in 'bags of swank, boys' and his thumbs are not far off the side seams of his trousers.

Plain patterned

I was just saying “green” because a pp said golds suited Meghan and I was a bit confused as it was definitely not gold. Turns out pp wasn’t talking about the same dress as the rest of us 😂😂

Yes sorry I tend to make a lot of leaps in my head and forget that other people can’t see what’s going on in there 🤣🤣

No. We are discussing a panel discussing certain themes and how you would create a panel that would give more of a balanced view. Optics matter, but importantly so does having a balanced and fair debate.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 18/09/2023 13:51

I might have had enough of teal now though... its everywhere.

Oooooh. Well it's a sort of green. The word 'teal' just defined it more closely.

I've saw all the posts, people are allowed to question and disagree. You have said that the full panel would be biased, based on what?

Of course people will have a bias if the come from the same political party but not because they are the same colour

Daisyislazy · 18/09/2023 13:58

The dress was lovely, wasn't so keen on the short trousers

upinaballoon · 18/09/2023 14:00

I think we all have bias depending on everything about us and I think that part of our life's work is to understand that and not to let it lead us into unfairness.

Edit to say that works in all directions.

Both being the media and white are a problem if you want to create a fair panel when discussing Meghan, both because the media have been racist in general and to her and because they've accused them of it.

You have said that the full panel would be biased, based on what?

I did not say that. Please show me where I said they 'would be' rather than 'could be'.

Yes absolutely. when creating a panel discussion, to avoid accusations or presence of bias, its better to have as much diversity as possible- whether thats with regards to gender, race, or politics etc

Iwantcakeeveryday · 18/09/2023 14:06

An all male panel from the police profession, as one example, would not likely be on the show debating low rape convictions rates. If they concluded that it wasn't a problem and just a result of fair trials, many women would say that was because of their bias. So it would be better to create a panel of both men and women who were not from the police force.
