The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

@queentim thanks for sharing the numbers, its great news and I hope that means more places next time for vets :)

Rita Ora seems to always be performing at everything!

TallerSally · 16/09/2023 20:58

Even the support dogs are enjoying it! 😜

StormzyinaTCup · 16/09/2023 21:00

That was quite a good closing ceremony. I had to turn the chat side bar off as there was way, way too much 'we love ❤️ ❤️King Harry and Queen Meghan ' type fawning for my liking 😁

Well done Germany 🇩🇪

SPOILER

Going to post Meghan and Harry's final outfits!

For those who don't like it, close your eyes and pop into the other games thread (where people have been talking about the games and the vets all week, in case you've somehow missed it 😉)

For those who do like it, close your eyes if you don't want spoilers yet! 😂

She looks fab - and finally some of the colour for my eyes!

Sorry. Isn't it all about the veterans and not how Megan looks 🤔.

Well, as this thread title reads "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023",

then yes, IMO, I can post about how Meghan looks.

But like the post reads, if you don't like it, either move along past it, or join us in the thread where we've been discussing the games and vets all week.

Hope that helps! 😊

Daisyislazy · 16/09/2023 21:38

Well I would say that has been a success

queentim · 16/09/2023 21:40

Me too!

The handoff to Canada was really nice, and I'll look forward t9 seeing how they include the Indigenous peoples and communities

@Gilmorehill -it is funny. It’s all over the shop on here. One minute a thing is a ‘bad’ thing then, before you can say boo to a goose, the ‘bad’ thing becomes a ‘good’ thing, then if you hang around long enough (usually about half an hour) the ‘good’ thing that originally started off as a ‘bad’ thing goes back to being a ‘bad’ thing 😁. It just amuses me now.

StormzyinaTCup · 16/09/2023 22:39

Gosh, is everyone OK?

There was so much negativity about her in the press at the time. One example being talk about her fashion choices. It was obvious she was making a statement when she knew she would be photographed without appreciating that people would disingenuously connect it with her visiting children. She had to get on AF1 (or whichever official plane she took). From DC to Texas - wasn’t a short trip. The criticism and spin was/is par for the course in American politics though. No one even remotely could believe the message was about the children.

This essentially says the same thing:

No it wasn't obvious. And it wasn't 'disingenious' to make the connection. The stupid woman didn't make the connection that of course it would be included in the story of the children as she wore the jacket on the way there. What was obvious was that she didn't care about the children.

No one even remotely could believe the message was about the children.

Yes, I could. She was more concerned about her image and what the press thought of her fashion choices than the poor children she was visiting that her husband locked up. Of course, what would you expect from a Trump anyway.

Mylovelygreendress · 16/09/2023 22:51

Meghan’s clapping reminded me of the Baby Shark song my granddaughter loves.

Spare a thought for us ND posters trying to keep up 😅

Just a couple of weeks ago I was attacked by both sides (including H&M fans) for saying I didn’t like the way the IG documentary had been edited so that Meghan was silently hovering in the background. I wanted to hear her to actually say something (other than just as a support figure for her husband) like maybe talk to other veterans’ wives or something. I’m sure she did and it just got edited out. They said no, it’s Harry’s event, of course she isn’t talking. Now fast forward and the same people are like “of course Meghan is taking part, she can’t win with you.”

The #InvictusGames Düsseldorf 2023 by the numbers:

  • more than 140,000 spectators
  • 21 broadcasters
  • 800 accredited journalists
  • 431,710,000 Households tuned in
  • 67 countries

#IG23 #WeAreInvictus

WeAreInvictus Twitter is proud!

Bots, I tell you it's the bots (just joking)

Half a billion households 🙄 I think something may be off with those numbers.

And 800 accredited journalists, yet mostly covering Meghan Markle's wardrobe.

LadyMuckingabout · 17/09/2023 08:02

Not just about Meghan, but I’ve noticed that all Hollywood celebrities do that weird clapping with arms outstretched and flat hands now. It looks exhausting!

Haha indeed you can't win so I'd just stick with your own opinion and not feel swayed by others. I wish them both no ill will at all for example, genuinely hope they're happy and its been lovely she's been there to support him- but I personally think the march was weird AF as was presenting medals and if others disagree why do I care! Just as they are entitled to their own opinions :)

Samcro · 17/09/2023 08:50

its odd on these threads. posters who have caused a lot of hurt, always seem to post about how they have been targeted. always forgetting what they have done,
back to subject. it looks like it went very well for all involved. H&M seem to have done well.

colourwheelofortune · 17/09/2023 12:31

Total households in america, UK, france and germany is 223 million. So 431 million households is utter bollox.
@themessygarden I think you're right!

Pizzand · 17/09/2023 13:08

There's literally zero chance those figures are accurate, 431 million households when the YT channels were averaging 200 views?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That'd be a sizable chunk of the worlds population, absolute crap.
