I guess Deadline has it in for the Sussexes too.
Just like the British press, the Cut, then WSJ, Bloomberg News, and Rolling Stone magazine. It's all a vast conspiracy against the Sussexes.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Netflix Docuseries Snubbed By Emmy Voters

One person's SNUB is another person's win. And if it's a friend who wins, it's all the sweeter.

Maybe if you're Mother Theresa! For most of us mere mortals, we want the award ourselves!
That's like saying I'm happy to work at minimum wage because it meant my friend got a 20% raise on their £70,000 salary. How sweet that's made my life! What person think like that in real life?

Never heard of the critics choice award. Very left field. The Emmys are a different kettle of fish

I'd laugh my socks off if South Parks privacy tour show was nominated 😂

That would be so brilliant 😂😂

@Gracewithoutend

Netflix probably could have bought them the nomination so either

Netflix couldn’t be bothered
or someone else negated the Netflix lobbying

Thats what’s I’m interested to find out

Netflix got 103 nominations, HBO 114 - these nominations are plentiful enough

The organisation pays so much to enter the competition. Then for every category they enter after that, they have to pay extra. So I think it's $100 to actually enter your programme. Then it's $100 for each category you want to put that programme in for. So if you enter for best director, best editing, best score. That's $100 entry + $300 for the three categories. Obviously the more programmes you enter and the more categories for each programme you put in for, the more likely you are to get nominations. Law of averages. It's only going to be the large companies that can afford to enter so many. Less wealthy organisations would have to be more discerning.

I guess we are different then, and despite your name, grace is not something you are familiar with. I have competed for awards and lost to both friends and peers I respect. Losing is not great but if the person who does win is someone you like or whose work you respect, it's easy to applaud the winner with grace, and be happy for them.

Wait a minute. You said it's sweeter if your friend wins. So if you want your friend to win, why enter the competition against them?

jeffgoldblum · 13/07/2023 18:31

I'm confused 😐, it's all apples and oranges!

I said no such thing.

You have truncated what I wrote and misquoted me.

This is what I said, just one page back:

I am sure any disappointment will be tempered by the knowledge that their friend Oprah has been nominated, and may win "their" category.

One person's SNUB is another person's win. And if it's a friend who wins, it's all the sweeter.

I repeat:

One person's SNUB is another person's win. And if it's a friend who wins, it's all the sweeter.

Thank you.

Gracewithoutend · 13/07/2023 19:17

Aren't you saying that it's better to be snubbed if it ultimately means your friend wins?
For me, if I win, I'm happier than if my friend wins. Otherwise why would I enter? I don't think that makes me graceless. But if it does, then doesn't it make all competitions graceless and so no one should accept awards?

I am not saying that at all.

If you are competing with friends you like and peers you respect but don't win, and if you are a person who likes their friends or a person who respects their peers, it is possible to be gracious and happy for those who have won, even if you don't.

In this case, Meghan and Harry will be happy for their friend Oprah, not only because they like her, but they will also respect the subject of the docuseries that beat them to the nomination, which is the impact of slavery on American society. Given that one strand of their own docuseries was about the impact of UK's past of slavery and colonialism and how that continues to inform attitudes, I imagine this is something they will be happy to see win.

Certainly, in my world (books) winning is incredible when it happens, but when it doesn't happen, it's still possible to be happy for others and to be happy that books you enjoyed are rewarded. I personally love award ceremonies because it is always a happy event for someone.

SidekickSylvia · 13/07/2023 20:03

This is really funny.

Howsimplywonderful · 13/07/2023 20:09

They’re not competing with Oprah, they’re not even in the race.

all the other entries beat them too. They’re the ones in the race with Oprah

Hmmm I understood your original post and can't see why it caused confusion. You obviously mean if you don;t win and someone else does, its better if its a friend!

SidekickSylvia · 13/07/2023 20:03

what is?

Howsimplywonderful · 13/07/2023 20:20

Netflix might as well sign up Oprah instead of the Sussex’s following that logic. Would they be delighted she is continuing their ‘work’ scant as it was

Gracewithoutend · 13/07/2023 20:21

But you want to win, right? Like I want to win? What's the difference between us, then? Is it that I'm competitive so I don't want to be snubbed so that my friend wins. Whereas you're sweet with that? In your mind does that make you a better person? I'm not meaning to be aggressive but I can't find a way to phrase it more gently. I'm genuinely interested.

I haven't at any point mentioned how I react to friends who beat me, so you can't be saying I am a person with no grace over that. So why exactly do I have no grace but you have plenty of it? 🤔

costacoughee · 13/07/2023 20:33

Whether Oprah wins or not is irrelevant to the issue here which is the Netflix docuseries and it's being snubbed for an Emmy nomination despite Variety magazine saying they would be successful

themessygarden · 13/07/2023 20:38

“In this case, Meghan and Harry will be happy for their friend Oprah, ”

how do you so sure about this though? Are you guessing or do you have inside info!

how is it that you're still not understanding, how many times are we discussing one comment @MrsMaxDeWinter made? What she means is pretty straight forward. If I can;t win, I'd want my friend to and I'd end up happy rather than disappointed about myself. What's so hard to understand?

Personally, as I've said, I don't think they were snubbed.
But I don't get your argument. Are you saying that Netflix, which has got a ton of nominations so is clearly, according to your reasoning, excellent at campaigning, didn't think the documentary was worth campaigning for? Or that they did campaign hard for it, but it was still considered not good enough?

Howsimplywonderful · 13/07/2023 20:57

I see a writers strike will impact on their Ms Havisham documentary unless MM decides to write it herself

onlylarkin · 13/07/2023 20:57

I don't understand why it HAS to be one or the other. Cant they be disappointed they werent nominated AND be happy that Oprah was? Why does everything around this couple have to be so black and white? Especially when so much media coverage surrounding them is speculation.

To be frank, it was not an Emmy worthy show IMO. For me, I will be watching Harrys narration of Spare for awards. His narration was really good and more worthy of an award.

It's getting a bit weird, isn't it, especially as this is now the second time this week I have been misquoted by the same poster, then taken to task on the misquotation.

This is my cue to leave the thread before things get any weirder.

See you in the next one!

I totally get it.

If I didn't win an award, my disappointment would be softened by someone I admired and liked winning it instead of me. Makes sense. Isn't that quite normal? I think so.

I will look out for the next thread Smile
