Anyone Fancy a Royal Ascot Thread?

Royal Ascot starts on Tuesday, through till Saturday.

Whilst no attendance has been confirmed yet the King is expected to be present on at least one day and other Royals will also be on course.

I get the official Ascot emails at work, which include the carriage list, every day so am happy to put that up here after midday each day if anyone is interested.

I am going to Lady’s day for the first time and I have to understand how to bet (of course max £2 😀).

can anyone explain how it works?

CaveMum · 18/06/2023 21:25

Very jealous @Redcurtain12, I haven’t been for 10 years due to kids!

It’s very easy to bet:

Pick your horse
Probably best for you to bet with the Tote as most on course bookies will have £5 minimum bet.
Decide whether you want to bet you money on your horse to win, to “place” (come 2nd or 3rd, or if there are more than 16 runners 4th!) or “each way” (come 1st, 2nd or 3rd/4th). An each way bet will cost you double, so a £2 each way bet will cost you £4.
Go to the Tote window and say “£2 win/place/each way on x please” (either say the horse’s number in the race card or the horse’s name).
Get your bet receipt and if your horse finishes in the right place go back to any Tote window to collect your winnings.

The difference between the Tote and a regular bookie is that the Tote is pool betting - so the total amount bet on the horse is divided between the number of winning bets, whereas with a regular bookie you get fixed odds so you know how much you stand to win before the race.

Racing media is now reporting that the King is expected to be in attendance for all 5 days of Royal Ascot this week.

How many horses will suffer again for this shit show!

Iwantcakeeveryday · 19/06/2023 14:21

Its sad that on the royal board so few people actually want to talk about the working royals and what they're doing. lots of posts about Harry and Meghan though......

jeffgoldblum · 19/06/2023 14:58

I think the op wanted to discuss royal ascot.

CaveMum · 19/06/2023 15:30

As this is the Royal Board I just wondered if people were interested in seeing the carriage list each day to see which royals are in attendance at the meeting.

I work in racing and am on the (very large!) mailing list to get the daily updates which include the carriage list released at midday each day.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree this is not the place to discuss the perceived rights/wrongs of the sport, though I’m sure you can guess which side of the fence (or running rail!) I come down on 😜

It's fine @CaveMum , it's nice to see a royal post about something a little different.

cathyandclare · 19/06/2023 15:41

I'm going tomorrow. Very excited!

The very first time we went, thirty five years ago or so, Prince Charles parked his green vintage Aston right next to us and sauntered off to the Royal Box- never been close to any Royalty since!

The weather's looking a bit iffy for tomorrow, but we have a gigantic umbrella, so good to go.

jeffgoldblum · 19/06/2023 15:47

Have a nice time @cathyandclare 👍

Clerk of the Course gave his forecast update this morning, all the major courses get highly personalised forecasts from the Met Office almost to the minute so are usually pretty reliable. This is what he said:

Oh and enjoy the racing! Hoping that Frankie has a good first day on his two favourites, Inspiral and Chaldean!

OP posts:
CaveMum · 19/06/2023 16:47

Oh and if Frankie wins the 5.35 on Saga, owned by the King, expect the roof to come off!

Frankie is retiring at the end of the year so this is his last Royal Ascot and you can believe he’ll be riding like the devil!

There's a few bets decided then! Thanks for the info- not terribly thrilled about the thundery showers, but the racing sounds good!

ShamedBySiri · 19/06/2023 21:11

Very envious of those of you going. Have a great time and keep us posted.
Thanks @CaveMum
Nice to have a fun thread.
Alas I'm too busy at work tomorrow to get a chance to put a bet on The King and Frankie. Hope Saga wins. That'll be a great start to his first Ascot as King and keeping the sport of Kings going.

I'd add advice to @Redcurtain12 to check your ticket when you place a bet.
I was having a great day at our local point to point - 2nd (each way), a 3rd and a 1st and hadn't cashed in my tickets because I was busy in the bar between races but when I went to collect the 2nd (which was long odds and would have paid quite well) was a ticket for a different (losing) horse than the one I had chosen. I guess they are very busy and mistakes happen. Very annoying. And then I hadn't recouped enough money for my final bet to be each way so I went for a win but it came in second (which obv would have paid out if I'd been each way). Still, lots of fun and I broke even so could have been worse. DH was annoying though, saying "oh well, you should have checked your ticket" - we'd never have heard the end of it if it had happened to him. 🙄

ShamedBySiri · 19/06/2023 21:12

I've never really understood those accumulators but I'm sure there'll be a few on Frankie for each race / all day.

smilesy · 19/06/2023 21:58

My middle son went a few years ago (pre covid). Sent us a picture of him in his top hat etc. Unfortunately he bore a strong resemblance to the Fat Controller 😂😂

Loki64 · 19/06/2023 23:40

Would be interested in your updates please!! Im going on Friday x

Maireas · 20/06/2023 07:36

Looking forward to the outfits!

Greengreented · 20/06/2023 07:45

I’m very envious of everyone heading to RA today - have fun!

MokaEfti · 20/06/2023 08:28

Oooh, so am I. Didn't realise it was this week but we are half way through June already. Is it on ITV or Ch 4 - I expect one or the other. Better move and be home for this afternoon. To be truthful, I have it on TV at 1.45 so I can see the carriages and see who's there and what they're wearing, and then I switch over or off. Oh dear, Countdown, cricket if weather allows and Ascot, 'running concurrently'.

CaveMum · 20/06/2023 08:57

@upinaballoon ITV have the rights to show racing these days. The programme will start at about 1.30/1.45 each day so that they’re all ready to go before the carriage procession at 2pm sharp.

What a lovely thread! I shall tune in, OP!
