No great surprise there... Would love to hear his story about Zooming Prince Harry, I can only imagine his frustration with the whining ninny!

My old Dad once said..... don't read on if you are sensitive.... that nutsness is hereditary. America was founded on religious nutcases. They buggered off from England, as in the Pilgrim Fathers, because they didn't fit in in England. And many others from other countries followed them for kind of the same reasons. They were either running away from trouble in their homelands, so basically criminals, or they were religious nutters. And, so he says, that why Americans are, well, nuts. A

Well.. that’s a gross exaggeration. Running for their lives because of starvation and destitution, or from the Highland clearances and the potato famine. People with enormous grit and determination to survive. There were also nutters and criminals too of course. However stealing a loaf of bread or poaching from a landowner to feed a family was enough to get many people deported.

Wherestheheatwave · 25/06/2023 23:30

Also, people were trying to escape religious persecution at home. Not the other way round.

dontchaknow · 25/06/2023 23:37

Of course people were escaping starvation and pogroms and the like, but my Dad was just, in his 95 year old way, trying to explain how a lot of Americans are a bit odd. And maybe he has a point. I dunno. There are an awful lot of wackos in the states.

Yes you’re right. Also in Australia. I get your point and sorry if I sounded sniffy.

Gracewithoutend · 25/06/2023 23:42

I think people are a bit too serious i about dontcha's dad's conjecture. I don't think he was trying to get his thesis, that he came up while getting over his hip operation, entered into the Lancet or anything. Just a bit of a fun observation. 🙄

dontchaknow · 26/06/2023 00:06

To get back on topic.......in the absence of any talent, their USP is that they are royal. Except they aren't any more. This is not going to end well.

grass321 · 26/06/2023 07:14

And that’s as a guest. I’m assuming you have knowledge and experience around the topic? Being in charge of the entire podcast based on an area of interest rather than experience and expertise would be much more intense.

I do. They wanted 5-6 minute answers for each question which is quite lengthy when you time it. Some of the questions weren't in my core area so needed more preparation in terms of research.

In fairness, I'm sure it's topic dependent. Investing can be quite technical but is also broad so you have to think what you want to focus on. If I was doing a podcast about my life (which I doubt would be even vaguely interesting), I'm sure you could ad-lib fairly easily.

And I guess the host's job is less difficult if they pre-agree the questions, rather than keeping it free flowing and more flexible.

I can only hope the American people are smarter than the idea of voting for a d-list actress to any important office

Well they made Reagan president, but politics is a dirtier business than most and I'm not convinced Meghan could stand the heat of constant public jibes from those with more power than herself

I guess it would solve the issue of security provision though ...

Reagan did a movie with a monkey and was in the film "Brother Rat", so voters figured he would be able to work with Senators and Representatives.

I wouldn't want him analyzing Australia at any point.

Yes, I am quite aware of what he did over the course of his career. I'm sorry the humor escaped you.

My parents met him when he was campaigning and we were all fans of his, though I did not agree with everything he did.

Love it Grin

AutumnCrow · 26/06/2023 10:11

Reagan also had a dependable spouse. I know Nancy wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but she was a smart cookie.

In US politics, the spouse matters.

Not sure whether it’s considered essential to wheel the kids out or not? They all seem to end up doing it at the end of campaign rallies, etc. Families on parade.

Qbish · 26/06/2023 10:17

A fairly obvious move would seem to be that MM ditches Harry, marries a billionaire, and using his money runs for governor of California, as a stepping stone to the Presidency.

Purely conjecture, of course 😅

I thought a grifter was someone who works hard.
Must mean something different in the US.

Someone who works hard is a grafter. The opposite of Harry and Meghan. I read they only work on their charity work for 1 hour a week between them. Yet they get awards.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 26/06/2023 10:45

Then you have misunderstood. Like so many.

No problem at all! I was actually dissing the Senators and Representatives, but can totally see how it was not clear. 👋🙃

what a disgusting thing to say and to repeat here.

Maireas · 26/06/2023 12:13

If you know any history of the USA during the Gilded Age you will know that many of those millions of migrants were Irish because of the famine, Scots because of the poverty and lack of opportunity, Jews because of the pogroms and many others for religious, political, social and economic reasons. Such simplistic and sweeping statements from that person are just ignorant and really aren't worth bothering about.

AutumnCrow · 26/06/2023 12:15

There's a prominent article in the Times today that appears to be based on the WSJ piece.

Header: "Netflix and Spotify chiefs 'found Sussexes unproductive'"

Sub-header: "Sources say the Sussexes have been ‘undermined by their inexperience as producers’"

I can't read to the end of the Times article as it's paywalled, so I don't know if the Times has anything new to offer or it's just a re-hash.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 26/06/2023 12:19

WSJ and The Times are both owned by Murdoch.

I could totally see that happening except I just can’t imagine a billionaire wanting to marry her (assuming marriage is what she’d want but maybe not). I’m just not sure what she could offer a billionaire that he couldn’t get elsewhere a thousand times over.

Howsimplywonderful · 26/06/2023 12:31

I think the dogs in the street know the Sussex’s were unproductive.

Too many deals without the ideas, teams and structure in place to fulfil them.
