The Prince and the Press: Continuing the Discussion on Prince Harry and the UK Media

MrsMaxDeWinter · 06/06/2023 10:12

A few weeks ago, there were three really great long running threads about Prince Harry and his battles against the UK "popular press."

I thought I would do one that looks at Harry's current court action.

For those interested in the kind of balanced view you won't get from the tabloids, all of whom face conflicts of interest, here is the Guardian take, which is the springboard for this discussion.

It is not possible to take any of the tabloids seriously when they report on Harry's legal cases. Former editor Alan Rusbridger, now of Prospect, has observed that all tabloids covering this story are acting unethically as they have not declared their conflicts of interest: Harry is suing all of their media houses.

The only papers with no conflict of interest are the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Financial Times.

So I will be following this from the Guardian live page.

Diana, Meghan and the tabloid press: Harry finally gets his day in court

The Duke of Sussex has made it his life’s work to change the British media landscape. He’ll get his chance this week in the phone hacking case against the Mirror Group

MrsDaisyChappelle

I am so sorry to hear that. Do MNHQ not actually read the posts which are mass reported?

Thank you again for setting up this thread.

Hear hear to that.

This has been such an interesting thread with information, facts, opinions and none of the endless insults and slurs about Harry which just drags any thread down to the lowest common denominator. Yes, he isn't doing it all right, yes he might lose... but he is standing up and being counted.

I'm of the mind that phone hacking and pap bin rummaging is inexcusable and should be stamped out. The press have had to calm down their ways since Diana and the majority do keep to this but of course there are the horrible ruthless paps ... but from what little I'm reading already (just mainly BBC as not got time to scour the media) Harry's arguments are thin at best, and the evidence ... saying about bringing the reporters in ... it's nonsense IMO, he should have a solid case and it seems very flimsy. Maybe I'm wrong but we'll see.
Whilst I have no time for PH, I'm wondering if he's got a case and it should be supported if it's true At present though it just doesn't seem very good and therefore I can only speculate he'll be eaten alive by the KC.
My suspicions are he's been mollycoddled his whole life and is very entitled and always thinks he can get away with anything being royal and not being questioned, always expecting people to back down because of who he is (these tv interviews recently severely lack any interviewers with decent digging skills, just light touch and arse kissing) so he's going to really struggle with being put in his place if that's what happens .. we'll see!

kirinm · 06/06/2023 16:14

I still haven't read the statement but AGKC will be highlighting the articles that best discredit Harry's case. There may be other articles he can't be so sure about and he'll avoid talking about them - they will then be brought up in re-examination.

Or he may plan to read out something about every single article which means Harry's evidence is going to go on for ages!

I believe it's highly likely he has a case. If the press phone hacked so many others, you seriously think they didn't try him? Whether or not he can prove it, I don't know. However, Harry is only one of 100 witnesses. This case is about much more than him, despite the way the press are playing it.

I expect most will stop reporting it once the really famous have testified.

TBF I don't care what his original motivation was, he has helped public awareness. I first saw him talking about it in an interview a few years back. He refuted that press intrusion happened because the victims chose to put themselves in the public eye, pointing out most victims were ordinary people ( who don't have the £££ to go to court) which many don't seem to realise. So many people appear to have never even heard of the Watsons for example but it's one of the worst examples.

I was never a fan in his early days but he's put his money where his mouth is, contributing to various worthy causes, including Hacked Off, with which he is still closely associated.

Of that's how you see it, fair enough.

I see a lot of posts deleted on this thread, but none by any 'buddies' - I don't have buddies here, I post my own opinion.

Haywirecity · 06/06/2023 16:38

Especially as this recent suspension is not about anything I have seen... it is obviously as a result of a concerted effort by certain posters to mass report.

I don't know what's happened. And I don't really want to know in case it gets the thread deleted. But how do you know it's to do with mass reporting? Did MNHQ tell the poster that?

‘But how do you know it's to do with mass reporting? ‘

Good question! Mumsnet wouldn’t just ban or delete cos something is mass reported, they woudl look into it and then make a decision based on clear evidence. They have talk guidelines for all of us to abide by.

Feel free to point out how I have insulted and ridiculed him, or called him any names, or her (presumably you mean Meghan?)

Roussette · 06/06/2023 16:44

I have not quoted your post. I am talking in general which is obvious from what I have said.
