The Prince and the Press: Continuing the Discussion on Prince Harry and the UK Media

A few weeks ago, there were three really great long running threads about Prince Harry and his battles against the UK "popular press."

I thought I would do one that looks at Harry's current court action.

For those interested in the kind of balanced view you won't get from the tabloids, all of whom face conflicts of interest, here is the Guardian take, which is the springboard for this discussion.

It is not possible to take any of the tabloids seriously when they report on Harry's legal cases. Former editor Alan Rusbridger, now of Prospect, has observed that all tabloids covering this story are acting unethically as they have not declared their conflicts of interest: Harry is suing all of their media houses.

The only papers with no conflict of interest are the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Financial Times.

So I will be following this from the Guardian live page.

Diana, Meghan and the tabloid press: Harry finally gets his day in court

The Duke of Sussex has made it his life’s work to change the British media landscape. He’ll get his chance this week in the phone hacking case against the Mirror Group

and me

not gonna respond to nastiness

Harry had a pretty poor case and a big wallet the others had very good cases and smaller wallets

David arranged for a little rendezvous with Harry to bring him and his wallet on board.

jeffgoldblum · 14/06/2023 18:08

Short and succinct @Howsimplywonderful , just the way I like it! 🤣

I’d say this sums it up. Plus huge publicity

And if Harry wanted to?

What's Harry got to lose? He has a weak case and he wants to say his piece. I know he's the butt of jokes now but in a couple of years or so, people will only be saying that he won.

Howsimplywonderful · 14/06/2023 18:11

@jeffgoldblum

Why thank you.

I would be saying he along with others won

That's My take on it

Iwantcakeeveryday · 14/06/2023 18:15

*Still doesn’t stop it being likely that it was a considered move for the publicity with this kind of headline in mind.

I think it is unfair on the others involved.

It feels showy to me.

And if PH wanted to? I would wonderwhy he wanted to. I would doubt it was altruism…*

This is just conjecture though, you are filling in the details for yourself and judging Harry based on them.

AmarilloSunser · 14/06/2023 18:16

Love it @Howsimplywonderful

What makes you say that though? How would you know the strength of any of these cases? The lawyer for MGN has had the same defence for all, 'there absolutely no evidence of phone hacking'.

Maybe you would. Most of us wouldn't. I'd bet in a week, most people wouldnt even remember who the other 3 were!
And when he's doing his case against the mail in Jan 2024, people will say he won against the Mirror. They won't be saying Harry plus 3 other claimants won. Just like Fiona Whitehouse won't be saying, I won along with three other people. She'll be saying, I won.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 14/06/2023 18:22

Roussette · 14/06/2023 14:56

I find it very distasteful to be knocking this lawyer who is representing people who have been through hell with illegal practices.

But just carry on
It says more about those doing this than it does him. Even his physical appearance was mocked yesterday in an extremely insulting way

Would you be saying the same if Harry wasn't part of this case?

No you wouldn't. You probably would be cheering him on.

Yes, he also represented the McCanns, Baroness Lawrence currently against ANL and even Princess Diana. I have more than once seen him referred to as a respected lawyer and find it curious theres any disparaging of him here.

Well
... We know why

As is everyone on this post , they are just filling in from different bias .

ArcaneWireless · 14/06/2023 18:25

No more than anyone else’s conjecture.

Unless anyone absolutely knows for sure of course. Yet to see it.

I’m entitled to my opinion and to wonder about possibilities.

Some see judgement where there is none and cast judgement on their interpretation of someone else’s words. And could well fill in details for themselves.

Glass houses and that.

Roussette · 14/06/2023 18:37

Fiona Wightman's testimony is heartbreaking
At the worst time in her life 😢

jeffgoldblum · 14/06/2023 18:38

Sometimes I wonder what the point is , others have their opinions and believe that's the truth and I have mine , nothing that has been posted has changed my opinion of Harry and clearly it hasn't changed his fans opinion's from the other side !
Why bother I wonder?
Then I remember that humans like to gossip and discuss topics and find others who agree with them.

Howsimplywonderful · 14/06/2023 18:45

@jeffgoldblum

So true, an episode of the Windsors every now and then makes you laugh at them all equally (and want to shout tequila at regular intervals)

Harry and the royals are bit of light relief really (my brothers girlfriend has just headed home for a few weeks to Ukraine

jeffgoldblum · 14/06/2023 18:48

Oh @Howsimplywonderful , is that safe for her?
The war in Ukraine seems to have slipped to the bottom of people's minds lately, but it's hard to believe it's still ongoing and affecting people close to us 💐

Yup

Iwantcakeeveryday · 14/06/2023 19:50

Having an opinion on something we know happened is one thing, but inventing a narrative about the reason he's part of the case and then making harsh moral judgements on him based on that is different and in my opinion, unreasonable.

jeffgoldblum · 14/06/2023 19:54

That's your opinion, others may disagree.

AmarilloSunser · 14/06/2023 19:59

harsh moral judgements on him

???

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/06/2023 20:21

I have more than once seen him referred to as a respected lawyer.

He's obviously very successful.
