The Prince and the Press: Continuing the Discussion on Prince Harry and the UK Media

A few weeks ago, there were three really great long running threads about Prince Harry and his battles against the UK "popular press."

I thought I would do one that looks at Harry's current court action.

For those interested in the kind of balanced view you won't get from the tabloids, all of whom face conflicts of interest, here is the Guardian take, which is the springboard for this discussion.

It is not possible to take any of the tabloids seriously when they report on Harry's legal cases. Former editor Alan Rusbridger, now of Prospect, has observed that all tabloids covering this story are acting unethically as they have not declared their conflicts of interest: Harry is suing all of their media houses.

The only papers with no conflict of interest are the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Financial Times.

So I will be following this from the Guardian live page.

Diana, Meghan and the tabloid press: Harry finally gets his day in court

The Duke of Sussex has made it his life’s work to change the British media landscape. He’ll get his chance this week in the phone hacking case against the Mirror Group

Ahh interesting @StarbucksSmarterSister , I've never read a newspaper believe it or not !
I only see articles now on Apple News .

I thought the telegraph was supposed to be more highbrow than the dm and others?

Yeah it was really highbrow when it had two people sat in a bath with cardboard face masks on showing Prince Andrew and Virginia Guiffre on its front page. 🤣
It's up for sale at the moment... not doing so well ho hum

jeffgoldblum · 09/06/2023 16:38

@MayQueeen , I'm so very confused 🫤! 🤣

MayQueeen · 09/06/2023 16:39

And apologies if that’s already been discussed I missed a whole chunk of the thread

jeffgoldblum · 09/06/2023 16:39

I'm only going by what I heard Margot say on the good life !

Roussette · 09/06/2023 16:40

but I find it probable that if they are saying they have a source to confirm Chelsey wasn’t consulted that assertion is prob true

Like all that is being said by the newspapers in this court case is true too? That sort of true?!

In that case, some of the vile disgusting stuff they said about Nicki Sanderson is true then... just sayin' Hmm

MayQueeen · 09/06/2023 16:41

@MayQueeen
' Jerry! '

jeffgoldblum · 09/06/2023 16:42

@Maireas , exactly, she swapped for the telegraph! 🤣

MayQueeen · 09/06/2023 16:43

yes lets take one instance and blanket apply it to everything - who woudl have realised that’s the way forward, everything in all the papers - all lies - we must now discount everything all at once

alice in wonderland nonsense logic indeed 😂

Having your phone hacked is not the worst thing that can happen to you.

I still can’t fathom what Harry is about, until it suddenly occurred to me that he thinks he has a brain, and a fine one at that.

Of course Harry is a highly respectable man, and respectable men are indeed, by and large, thickos,

Wow spiteful. Perhaps Petronella is the thicko for proving Harry right.

Did I say that?

No.

So many posters judge Harry on his past actions in every which way. I judge Petronella Wyatt on her past articles and appearances on the sofa. She makes money out of Harry by slamming him at every single opportunity.

MayQueeen · 09/06/2023 16:48

Doesn’t mean that she’s made up that he didn’t consult his ex though - and I actually doubt she lied she now knows he’s on a crusade against the press why would she risk a lie about taht when he could easily pipe up and contradict her or sue her

You ought to read some of her previous articles. She would say anything to knock him. She has form.

She also slags off her ex boyfriend Boris J. Being waspish is her style like it or not.

MayQueeen · 09/06/2023 17:09

derxa oh really? That’s made me warm to her now 😂😭

Yes really! I watch GMB (which no one on here admits to watching) and she is wheeled on quite often. She doesn't give a shit.

Maireas · 09/06/2023 17:24

@derxa - don't worry, I've watched GMB too, so we can be flamed together! I actually enjoy the way that they have two commentators on to review and discuss the news from opposing points of view. It's actually very balanced. (Ducks down under parapet...)

I get the impression that some posters just like pitting against each other rather than the actual topic.

It seems to be pretty personal and bizarre that anyone - on either side - can get so activated and entrenched.

Just an observation of the level emotional energy expended - seems disproportionate IMHO.

Yy it's very tedious. And seems deliberate on both sides. This thread had managed to stay reasonable and fairly balanced (despite some earlier flouncing) but seems to be falling into the same nonsense as other Harry threads. If I was cynical, I'd say it was deliberate. Some posters would rather see threads deleted than see a reasoned discussion.

fwiw I don't care if PH told Chelsy or didn't tell her. He may have had a moral imperative to tell her but I didn't think this thread was about PH's morals. That just leads to rehashing old news. And no-one knows what Chelsy thinks. I thought this thread was about the lawfulness of press intrusion, story gathering and media reporting.

I was reading an article today and it referred back to the Royal Editor's testimony. I thought it was interesting that she didn't simply say Piers Morgan added in information. She actually referenced people he had met (from the Royal household or connected to the stories) and said he would come back from those meetings and then add in information. Quite a different description from the one that appeared in some of the media. And it may explain why Piers isn't being called as a witness. I know some posters were confused by that.

Roussette · 09/06/2023 17:31

So agree with this. I don't care either. Thank you for putting it so succinctly.

Interesting on Piers Morgan.

LadyMuckingabout · 09/06/2023 17:48

Has there been any comment by Harry on US publications? I saw that The Star - which one can’t help seeing at supermarket checkouts even if few buy it - had a very uncomplimentary cover about Meghan the other week.

EdithWeston · 09/06/2023 18:10

4plusthehound · 09/06/2023 15:00

And?

His position will be much stronger if he provides corroboration. The device on Chelsy's car seems the most promising (if the implication that Chelsy had two friends who were selling stories is correct, as that gives a plausible alternative route for information that does not involve hacking or other illegal methods)

mixedrecycling · 09/06/2023 18:13

Yes, presumably his protection officers would have known about that, and it can be confirmed.
