Pronunciation of Eugiene

YouWonJayne · 13/05/2023 08:36

So it seems Eugiene is pronounced -You-zhu-knee or You-juh-knee

I may be imagining it but when she was a child I’m CERTAIN the press reported her throughout as “You-Janey”

Is it just me?

Eugenie, your i is in the wrong place.

Polik · 13/05/2023 08:42

Pronunciation us "Use Your Knee"

Polik · 13/05/2023 08:43

You're*

FatGirlSwim · 13/05/2023 08:47

Yup, ‘use your knee’ but I remember YOU-genie in the 1980’s too.

whiteroseredrose · 13/05/2023 08:50

I went to school with a You-Jean-ie.

Cyclingforcake · 13/05/2023 08:55

She says You-Jane-ee so …

Cyclingforcake · 13/05/2023 08:56

Agggh lost half my message …
so if we’re talking about the princess that’s what I’d use. Other Eugenies might pronounce it differently.

Meeting · 13/05/2023 09:03

Use-yuh-nee

toastofthetown · 13/05/2023 09:04

This is what she’s said about how her name is pronounced: "Whenever we used to meet foreign people who were struggling with it, my mum and I would help them by saying, 'It's like Use Your Knees.' But whatever. I am now used to every pronunciation,"

Dustyblue · 13/05/2023 09:08

I always thought it was literally the feminine of Eugene. So You-Jeannie.

But it seems to be as above, more Yoush-zainy . Use your knee is a good reference! :)

BMW6 · 13/05/2023 12:27

You jeany

User63847484848 · 13/05/2023 12:29

I would have said you-jeany but seems I would be wrong!

luckylavender · 13/05/2023 13:12

It can't be use your knee - there's no S

Maireas · 13/05/2023 13:17

Yooooogeneeeeeee

Morestrangerthings · 13/05/2023 13:25

If you search ‘pronounciation Eugenie’ you can hear it. I clicked on the English version and then clicked on the French version. It’s prettier in English - I think.

crosstalk · 13/05/2023 15:15

I have one since the name is in the family. French way is U-zhen-ie

No Jean in it anywhere.

BeyondMyWits · 13/05/2023 15:19

My gran was Eugenie, she pronounced it ur-jen-knee.

There’s no hard ‘s’ sound in ‘use’ - more of a ‘zh’

Isn’t that how Jean sounds in French?

zurala · 13/05/2023 16:03

When she was born the press said it was ooh-jenny. It kind of is, but with a soft j more like zszh

Ontopofthesunset · 13/05/2023 16:22

If it were the French pronunciation it would be Er-zhay-nee (apologies for those of you with rhotic accents but I don't know how to represent the French 'eu' sound in English without an r - it's the same sound as in French 'jeune' or 'bleu').

I assume the normal English pronunciation would be like Eugene with an ie on the end (and I'm pretty sure I've heard it said that way), so You-jean-ee, but the royal pronunciation seems halfway between the French and the English.

TheSnowyOwl · 13/05/2023 16:24

You can listen to her wedding vows online and hear exactly how she pronounces her name.

CadburyDream · 13/05/2023 16:28

I thought it was you-jeanie

KickAssAngel · 13/05/2023 16:31

Eugene (and other spellings) can be pronounced as U-jean or U-zhene. So U-zhen-ie is taking one pronounced and adding ie at the end.
