The royal family

The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

Right, so people definitely are suggesting that protesters should shout, scream and generally disrupt the day

Isn’t that what those lining the streets in support of this spectacle are doing? Why is it ok for them but not people who don’t support this?

Yes. Someone said homeless people should pitch a tent next week where the endless tents have been for the Royalists.

See how long they would take to get moved on....

KingSpaniel · 06/05/2023 09:02

Oh and I’m not fucking pearl clutching I just don’t let the royals and their lackies pull the wool over my eyes as they clearly have yours. Anyway enjoy your day of tugging that forelock to your masters. Good to know your place.

BBC: Around half a dozen protesters from the anti-monarchy group Republic have been arrested.
They were unloading a van of placards, just north of Trafalgar Square.
Matt Turnbull, one of those arrested, said the straps holding the placards had been “misconstrued” as something that could be used for locking on.
New legislation passed this week made it illegal to prepare to lock-on to things like street furniture.

Nice excuse. Republic have never ever glued themselves, strapped themselves, done anything remotely like that.

Roussette · 06/05/2023 08:58

And Graham Smith is a very reasonable man. He has been interviewed many many times on all news channels. He puts his case succinctly and carefully.

And now he is arrested. For nothing.

It really is appalling. I am going to tweet all this endlessly. I have a lot of followers, I want people to know.

Please do

I said the whole coronation was dystopian

And it's happening in front of us

Meanwhile Charles and Camilla are anointed

Anyone with intelligence will see what is happening

KingSpaniel · 06/05/2023 09:03

@Serenster and why shouldn’t they be allowed to protest?!? Wow! They’ve done a number on you haven’t they?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/05/2023 09:04

I feel it's like an ambush to be honest

Probably because that's exactly what it is, Roussette, and sadly the pre-agreements played right into the police's hands - or rather, into the hands of those doing the instructing

Agree about the placards, Serenster, but not about the shouting - though maybe I should have made it clearer that I was speaking of seriously disruptive behaviour rather than something which some just don't like.
Last time I looked we didn't get arrested in the UK because someone simply doesn't like whatever it is - except now it seems we do Sad

I’m outraged at these arrests. Are we in North Korea?

In the important things in a society - freedom of speech , freedom of protest , an unbiased media -
We are on the same path

What are the 'royals' so afraid of ?
They know they are weakened so need the jack boot

It depends on where you live.

My rural village is full of bunting and is having a street party. There is lots of enthusiasm.

But people do seem to be embarrassed to like the royals these days. Mainly because rid you say you do then some wanker starts ranting about why that makes you a bad person.

All that does is make the support for the royal family less easy to see in day to day conversation. I think Republic would have a shock if they tried to push forward with a referendum.

Funny that because I genuinely think it’s the other way around. I think huge numbers of people are pretty indifferent to the monarchy and that is assumed to be positive support for it.

Flappingtarps · 06/05/2023 09:08

I hope you and your village have a lovely day though Boudicasbeard

I may be a Republican but I don’t want to ruin anyone’s day 😀.

Roussette · 06/05/2023 09:09

@Novella4 @vera99 and anyone else who finds these arrests appalling, do link anything you come across on here and I will tweet the hell out of it. I have done so with everything so far.

vera99 · 06/05/2023 09:09

This is how fascism starts. Abuse of powers, suppression of free speech and the cult of the leader.

Republic do not turn up unannounced

They always liaise with police and agree a spot
Trafalgar Square was agreed

Some people tweeted last night that barriers were being put up at the agreed spot ( to block )

This is a low and I hope everyone is ok
It will help the cause I believe
I'm off to donate again

Roussette · 06/05/2023 09:11

I want anyone on here who has gone to a lot of trouble today to have fun with neighbours, kids, relations to have a banging time! I know how much kids enjoy street parties and stuff like this.

It is absolutely bucketing here though!

I agree.

It will help Republic greatly. Because those who just don't care will be pushed towards it.

RaininSummer · 06/05/2023 09:12

Not at all interested myself but it's nothing to with age or personalities just that's it seems so irrelevant to me not to mention really boring.

poppysockies · 06/05/2023 09:13

There were a lot of placards in that truck, probably far more placards than they have supporters to carry them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the intention wasn't to attach them to the hoardings etc.

Seems very much like an organised campaign to disrupt the coronation rather than an organic protest. Individuals with handmade signs etc would not be targeted in the same way.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/05/2023 09:13

So people definitely are suggesting that protesters should shout, scream and generally disrupt the day

I'm not responsible for what others suggest, and if anyone causes serious civil disorder then by all means arrest them
However let's not forget we're not talking a bunch of known rioters here; it was a pre-arranged protest in which Republic cooperated fully with the authorities, only to be arrested for their trouble - and if people are prepared to defend this then frankly I find that deeply worrying

Blossomtoes · 06/05/2023 09:13

I’m a monarchist and am horrified at this. Yet another completely unjustified over reaction from the Met. They appear to have learned nothing from the reaction to their behaviour at the Sarah Everard vigil.

poppysockies · 06/05/2023 09:14

It will help Republic greatly. Because those who just don't care will be pushed towards it.

I disagree. The industrial-scale placard production will make people wonder who's behind it & how they stand to gain.

It doesn’t matter if it’s organised, it’s a free country and in a free country you are meant to have the right to protest.

You would say that wouldn't you?

Totally wrong. You don't know how any were intending to turn up. And FYI, the place they were going to protest was agree with the Police, because it would not disrupt anything

You can't hold up a blank piece of paper so again, you are incorrect. A man was arrested for that when K&W went walkabout somewhere.

Whaeanui · 06/05/2023 09:15

What on earth are you talking about?

polkadotdalmation · 06/05/2023 09:15

Nobody give a damn if people protest, they have every right to do so. What they don't have the right to do is hold up huge signs that block people's views, or scream down megaphones ruining other people's enjoyment.

In other words they have rights to peaceful protest but other people have the right to watch what they have chosen in peace too. One group of people's rights do not trump other rights.

thats democracy

Novella4 · 06/05/2023 09:16

If you go to republics Twitter you'll see that the head of Republic, Graeme Smoth was arrested along with 5 staff

Hundreds of placards removed from them
He was helping unload a van
( impressively hands on if you ask me)
A tweet from Trafalgar Square shows a large crowd already
Maybe that's why the police removed the yellow placards - they can say the crowd was for the 'royals' if there isn't a sea of yellow

You obviously don't know about Republic do you... oh dear...
