A rare interview with the wonderful Princess Anne.

Pragmatic, straight-forward, and very moving, especially when she talks about what lockdown meant for elderly people.

I don't agree with her on the monarchy's links to slavery, but I really like her.

Yes, very interesting interview. I hadn't come across this so thanks, OP.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 02/05/2023 13:24

It was shown on Canadian TV yesterday. Loved the montage of her visits to Canada. And she has the same figure she had as a young woman, Need to start riding horses!

She a very strong woman. Very like her mother and very committed to the monarch. What's not to like 😊

MrsMaxDeWinter · 02/05/2023 14:33

Indeed, what's not to like. She's ace.

Anne is my fave so I’ll be giving this a watch later. Thanks

themessygarden · 02/05/2023 14:43

I watched that and wondered why the sister of the King could not be Queen, why does it have to be the wife of the King ! sounds a weird concept, but I really do think she would have made a fab queen.

Gingerkittykat · 02/05/2023 18:04

I don't like the way she dodged the question about the Royal family's historic links with slavery.

Novella4 · 02/05/2023 18:07

She said nothing

In fact her evasion about slavery was disgraceful. We have modern slavery so - shrug?

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 02/05/2023 18:16

It looks to be the same outfit/background to the interviews post her DPs deaths, perhaps that explains why it was quite 'generic'?

MayQueeen · 02/05/2023 19:47

Thanks for sharing - she’s fab

I didn't like it either but to be fair to her, this is not a question she could really answer. She's not the monarch. Just a member of his family.

I've only seen the clip about slavery - I didn't see the bit about the loneliness of older people

But why can't she adddress it ?
This 'protocol' crap is a get out of jail free card

I have it on good authority that Princess Ann has never owned a slave nor even wished for one.
I expect she dodged the question because it's a real pain when somebody tries to hold you responsible for what somebody did centuries ago to somebody who died centuries ago.

HerRoyalNotness · 02/05/2023 20:07

I think she mentioned modern slavery to perhaps suggest that the focus should be on solving that in the now rather than looking back.

Inkanta · 02/05/2023 20:11

I caught some of this and her voice reminded me of the queen and I had a fleeting feeing of wouldn't it be nice if she was crowned queen.

Flappingtarps · 02/05/2023 20:31

Rather wonderful? Seriously op? Each to their own and I don't want to be disrespectful or anything but surely it's no surprise that she defended the monarchy. And all of us should feel some collective responsibility for slavery and how we came to be one of the richest countries in the world. I thought that was in part what our foreign aid contributions are, or were, about? Making restitution in small part to former colonies?

And for her to say that it doesn't look like a good idea for the monarchy to be slimmed down? Seriously? In the 21st century, surely they are doomed if they don't? I said this on another thread but the amount of patronages they have can be reduced substantially.

There's absolutely no acknowledgement or sensitivity from her of the immense privilege she has. I know she works hard but so do all of us and we don't have staff!

I wish there was as much discussion about modern slavery as there is about slavery in the past. It horrifies me to think what people in this country may be enduring under our noses.

We didn’t become one of the richest countries in the world because of slavery. It was because we were the first industrialised nation. Having an empire was actually our downfall because we had a captive market and so became uncompetitive, unlike Germany which had to innovate.

Pixiedust1234 · 02/05/2023 20:43

Thanks for posting OP. It was interesting, and I've always had respect for Princess Anne as she's so similar to her mother.

I agree.

well spoken and well handled interview.
no one can go back in time and no one can change what occurred but we can all move forward and yes examine modern slavery.

A much more valid point. Nothing can be done to undo historic slavery, but we should focus on modern day slaves.

polkadotdalmation · 02/05/2023 21:22

@Flappingtarps She said the monarchy couldn't be slimmed down because they have lost harry, meghan, andrew, the queen and prince philip in the space of a couple of years.
Theres only charles and camilla, william and kate, edward and sophie, anne and the duke and duchess of gloucester (who i've never even heard of). 9 people to serve 67 million people in the UK and umpteen overseas countries. Its why I say encourage them to have their own president and ditch the monarchy.

Foreign aid is nothing to do with slavery, its trying to bring the economies of those countries on. We give foreign aid to china, and i don't think we ever colonised or enslaved them. We were the first to abolish slavery and lost men and ships attempting to stop and free ships with slaves on board.

Novella4 · 02/05/2023 21:31

The descendants of enslaved people are asking about slavery - that is happening now .
The king in the Netherlands has admitted the monarchy's role and is encouraging research
Crickets from the Windsors - despite a British monarch funding the ships and having their own particular brand .

And of course we have modern slavery but Anne used it to deflect and attempt to minimise

Slimmed down monarchy is not just about the numbers of hangers on . That's a facile way to look at it- it was about reducing costs ! And here we are with 250 million unnecessary coronation

The british were not the first to abolish slavery . They passed a law to abolish slavery and sent some ships to patrol ( good) then behind the scenes the Bank of England made fortunes by using countries like Brazil as proxys and continued raking in profits from slavery
