Camping out on the Mall for the Coronation

So, my daughter and niece (10.5 and 11) are absolutely DESPERATE to camp out on the Mall for the Coronation. We took them to the Mall for the Jubilee last year and they absolutely loved it - we went early, but not early enough and were a couple of rows back. We had taken stools so they had a good view, but they really want to camp out for this one.

Has anyone done this before? I see that people do it, but are there rules about where you have to go or is it a bit of a free-for-all? I don't expect us to get any sleep at all, and we will be completely wrecked by the time it's over. But any tips (apart from the 'don't do it' one!)

If there's even a sniff of rain in the forecast, I've told them we're not doing it! 😆

@Mimilamore I've been contemplating going up the night before and seeing someone decorations but I get panicky in big crowds and stations suddenly get closed and crowds are suddenly corralled and penned in like sheep.. Before you know where you are your liberty to move has been removed and there are no loos.

Well there will be big crowds (damn) rain or no rain and if you feel like that then it is probably better to watch it on TV. For the funeral there were millions of Portaloos all over the place. For curious to see what it's all about Friday will be the best day, the media circus and decorations are in place and various rehearsals will be going on and throngs of tourists/royalists and gawpers ) me !

LIVE STREAM - they are even painting the bollards.

Diehards only need to apply. God moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. “

When all of this nonsense was instigated in 1066, terrible weather would have been interpreted as a very bad omen indeed.

It’s going to rain on Charles’ parade?

God is a republican;)

Well it was cloudy wet and chilly for Elizabeth II coronation .................

Hanging out with the other peasants in the rain to watch a 70odd year old billionaire be paraded around like some prize turkey isn't my idea of fun.

It's lucky that no-one's expecting you to do that, isn't it?

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/05/2023 09:29

Private Eye coronation issue sums it up for me. “Man in Hat Sits on Chair”.

Which jubilee was last year?

I've been on MN for fifteen years now and this is one of the maddest questions I've ever read. 😂😂😂

Seventy years she was the Queen and you didn't notice???

MissSueFlay · 04/05/2023 22:47

We are going tomorrow evening and spending the night in our chairs. That sounds bonkers, but I'm in a Facebook group where people started camping a couple of days ago, so I sound positively sane and sensible by comparison Grin

Curious to know - are they expecting queues and then have to organise a queue for queue? Are the Royal Parks open all night?

OP, I hope you have a fantastic evening. I went to the Mall this morning around 10am to take a look at it with the flags, campers and general craziness as I knew it wouldn’t be possible to wander about tomorrow. The atmosphere is great, like a big carnival. Lots of people so dressed up with flags, crowns, and posters.
The camping was one tent deep - most tents were at the barrier. We got chatting with some campers just opposite Clarence House and ended up being right at the barrier when he did the walk about. We got to shake hands with Charles and wish him luck! It was great! 😀
We will go early tomorrow to watch on one of the big screens in the park.

pompypomppomp · 05/05/2023 17:48

Are you there OP?

pompypomppomp · 05/05/2023 17:48

I mean at the Mall! 😄

Mimilamore · 05/05/2023 17:51

feralunderclass what you said....

Mustardandchickensandwiches · 05/05/2023 21:14

Well if its raining in London like it is in Nottingham I hope you've all brought a rubber dinghy!

bunglesmum12 · 05/05/2023 21:42

We are on the mall. It’s dark now but great atmosphere. Made lots of friends :) Hoping the rain stays off. Good luck everyone!

BMW6 · 05/05/2023 21:47

One of my sisters and her DH are there. They have a hotel room for the night but she's WhatsApped that they wish they were staying out as the atmosphere is so wonderful.

FourChimneys · 05/05/2023 22:13

I never normally buy Private Eye but bought a copy of their "historical coronation edition" today to support them 😊 I do like their covers, they are often very witty.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/05/2023 22:22

It’s not my cup of tea at all but I hope that for all of you there that it’s everything you’re hoping for.
