Why does Charles need 10 residences?

Is this his version of a slimmed down Monarchy? He has always been known to be a spendthrift with himself and very careful with everyone else. So his residences are:
Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Sandringham, Windsor Castle that is currently being renovated for him, Highgrove, Balmoral, Birkhall and Castle of Mey, plus his Romanian home and Llwynywermod in Wales.

Does he have a mistress resident in each house like the kings of the olden days? 🤔Or does he pretend to go all hippie talking to the plants in each garden and think people will miss the billion pound capital wealth he has done nothing for?

gogohmm · 07/03/2023 17:59

The house that's actually his is highgrove. The others are either owned by the monarch for the nation or in inherited from his mother (balmoral and sandringham). He's already trying to work out what to do about balmoral and I suspect conversations will be happening about sandringham. He wants to spend his downtime at highgrove. Both Windsor and Buckingham palace are being downsized too

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 18:19

How on earth can he “downsize” a palace?? Is he going to knock some of it down? 😄

PillBoxes · 07/03/2023 18:39

Just wondered - with no malice aforthought of course -who is paying for the "slimmed down" Coronation that is now looking as obese an elephant after all?

I don't know about the Dumfries House.
And of course Charles can do something about other properties like not designate them as his to live in.

Why should he designate he shouldn't live in his own houses? 🤔

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 07/03/2023 19:02

Highgrove isn’t owned by Charles.

Its owned by the Dutchy of Cornwall. He rents it from the Dutchy. Previously it would be recycled income, now it’ll be part of William’s Dutchy income.

Llwynywermod is also owned by the Dutchy of Cornwall. Same with Dolphin house in the isles of Scily.

Dumfries House is owned by the Prince’s Foundation.

Clarence House is still his main residence in London as none of them are living in Buckingham palace atm as it’s a building site. I think he’ll stay there and BP will be opened more often.

@Mumsnut good point. So let’s get rid of them then.

A national election costs over £100m. So electing a president on a 4 year cycle would cost £25m every year. That's half a billion every 20 years. One coronation every 20 years, that costs a few million, but brings in millions into the economy through visitors and tv rights seems a bargain.

Eddie and Sophie live in a humungous pile at Bagshot. Who owns that and who pays for the upkeep? I bet Andrew is jell as hell.

The wealth of the RF is obscene and gained mostly on the backs of the peasants. Doff your caps you ungrateful serfs.

The independently wealthy Queen Elizabeth purchased it for them as a wedding present.

Same as she purchased Anne's.

I don't agree. Democracy is a much better option and money well spent IMV, We then have a choice. We do not have ANY choice regarding the monarchy. I am not happy about that personally.

That's very generous of her late Maj. Where did she accumulate the wealth to purchase these piles? Not down the mines anyway.

Bagshot is rented from Crown Estates.

Think lessons were learned from Andrew’s wedding present…

Good to get clarification thank you. The Crown Estates huh? That convenient cover for the circular movement of money within the RF. Okay...

tillytoodles1 · 07/03/2023 19:26

Because he's the King and in his world he can do what he wants. Unlike us, he has unlimited funds to play with. The idea of a multi-million pound coronation while people are starving and freezing makes me feel sick.

Do women work down mines?

Interesting that Charles did not do the same for his children,
Charles always strikes me as a mean and petty man.

I think they learned from Andrew and the dodgy sale of his place.

Also, the Queen didn’t do it for Charles. Presumably there was seen as no real need given how much access he’d have due to his position. Same would be the case for William, and to a lesser extent Harry.

William already has several homes and Harry has his McMansion in California. Why would Charles buy them another? I bet you'd be complaining even more if he did.

In any case, the poster is mistaken. The Queen did not purchase Bagshot for the Wessexes. It is leased from the Crown Estates.

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 19:49

I meant obviously on marriage as the Queen did with some of her children.

That's not 'obvious' at all, since the queen gave homes to both of Charles' sons shortly after their marriages.

Why would Charles give them another? You're complaining about Charles having too many homes as king, but you think the then grandsons of the monarch should have multiple free homes?

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 19:54

The Queen did not give them homes. She gave them homes they pay rent on, and can also be evicted from. Very different from having a house bought for you.

Harry was reportedly paying £360,000 a year in rent. So hardly a gift in any meaningful sense.

Exactly the same as she did for her youngest son…

She gave Ammer as an outright gift to William, and a lease on Frogmore to Harry. Given how short the term on that lease was, my guess is that Charles would have given them something grander once he became king. But then they found freedom.

Are you really upset that members of the royal family aren't getting sufficient free houses? It doesn't really align with your other posts.
