The royal family

Why does Charles need 10 residences?

Is this his version of a slimmed down Monarchy? He has always been known to be a spendthrift with himself and very careful with everyone else. So his residences are:
Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Sandringham, Windsor Castle that is currently being renovated for him, Highgrove, Balmoral, Birkhall and Castle of Mey, plus his Romanian home and Llwynywermod in Wales.

'Bought with taxpayer money' - do you have a clue how total finances work? They give 100% of their income to the government and then they receive grants back from the government to live on and renovate/restore their properties. They are net contributors to 'the system' without even considering the tourism and merchandise revenue they generate for the national economy.

I've been to 4 of the residences mentioned as a paying visitor and they provide employment for vast numbers of people. Sandringham for example, is a huge employer in the local area & also support local charitable endeavours and trusts.

@IcedPurple What I want is for his slimming down not to mean Charles gets lots more properties and money and everyone else gets less. That is what seems to be happening.

You haven't said in practical terms what this means though. Do you want parts of British history sold off to some oil tycoon from Texas for what would be a pittance in the scheme of things?

And Charles hasn't got 'lots more properties' other than the ones he automatically got as King. I'm also not sure who you mean by 'everyone else' and why you're so concerned about them.

Eddie and Sophie live in a humungous pile at Bagshot. Who owns that and who pays for the upkeep? I bet Andrew is jell as hell.

The wealth of the RF is obscene and gained mostly on the backs of the peasants. Doff your caps you ungrateful serfs.

LimeCheesecake · 07/03/2023 17:13

I would assume Clarence House is being quietly kept hold of so that assuming Charles goes first, Camilla will move in there (even though she already has her own house).

I mean, the whole concept of a Royal family is barking when you think about it, he’s a really spoilt and brattish man, so it’s hardly surprising he’s holding on to far more properties than he could possibly ever need and expecting someone else to fund them.

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 17:13

Their income is from properties and land rented out that officially do not belong to them.

I don't know about the Dumfries House.
And of course Charles can do something about other properties like not designate them as his to live in.

Charles doesn't own Dumfries House. It is owned by a trust which restored the house and gardens which are now open to the public and host weddings etc.

Charles has stayed there occasionally but he doesn't own it.

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 17:14

Dumfries House was Charles vanity project, which of course he did not pay for. He never does.

The tourism argument didn’t take long! 🤦‍♀️

There is no evidence whatsoever that the royals are good for tourists so let’s knock this bullshit on the head for good.

I think he needs 10 residences to ensure he has lots of different places to travel between while lecturing the proles on climate change 🤪.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/03/2023 17:16

Because he is an entitled hypocrite who doesn't care about the people who he reigns over.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 17:17

@IcedPurple why can’t they be owned by us and opened up for tourists? But if you want to sell them to an oil tycoon, crack on.

IronCurtain · 07/03/2023 17:17

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 17:07

It is still a guesthouse. He may still stay there.

You know better than the people running the properties then. As per the link I shared with you.

But I think you’re deliberately missing the point. The fact that he visited there every year for about a decade is what made his conservation project so successful. It made the place famous. People started to be interested in the region and his foundation provided a way for sustainable tourism.

I don’t really care about the Royal Family either way but Charles has done a lot of good in my home country and it really bothers me OP that you try and frame his work there as some sort of self-indulgent holiday bolt (and pretend to know better than someone with very close ties to the area).

I think you may be responding to the wrong person.

Good point!
He is having electric chargers installed at Windsor. What a brilliant environmentalist.

He’s a collector?
why begrudge him his hobby?

Neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

Is Dumfries house the training centre?
that’s brilliant. I think what he’s done there is brilliant and I utterly applaud him for it

DriftingDora · 07/03/2023 17:23

He also has the use of Holyrood House in Edinburgh.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 17:23

@Riapia except he uses our money to fund his collection and then lectures us on climate change and other “pet projects”.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 17:24

@PosieLuton yay well done to the spaniel! What an incredible environmentalist he is 😬🤪.

he needs to charge his classic car some how. Plus staff and you know there’s people that live in there as well? They’ll need chargers.

isn’t Hampton court and Tower of London still crown estates?

few more from your list.

He’s been lecturing since the 1970’s. He’s been laughed at for his ideas.

yet it seems. He was right on a lot.

That's one opinion. I can tell you if you go there it is a really nice place to visit. It was run down before and they have turned it into a cracking place to spend a few hours. The gardens in particular are stunning.

Mumsnut · 07/03/2023 17:26

Frankly, why have a Royal Family if they aren’t dripping with jewels and palaces?

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 17:32

@VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji yes lecturing is a great word because he’s a total fucking hypocrite. He doesn’t practice any of what he preaches but lives a life of unbridled luxury while telling his serfs we should all make sacrifices. What a prick.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 07/03/2023 17:32

@Mumsnut good point. So let’s get rid of them then.

Coxspurplepippin · 07/03/2023 17:36

PosieLuton · 07/03/2023 16:45

And those he personally owns were bought with taxpayers money.

Err, no.
